And I heard him through, though the speech he delivered was almos’ identical with the one that has been -ent out from the Atlan ta potmetal mills, in plate, “free, and express charges prepaid. ” Still I was there to see and to lis ten and I did both. * * « And Hoke is a big man, both in point of size and by virtue of his high office—an office won because he was a big law; er and not be cause of his ability as a statesman. And today, in my opinion, lloks Smith is still an advocate and not a teacher. He is a lawyer who has been retained and he speaks, not as an instructor of the masses bu' as a paid advocate. * ♦ » This w s clearly demonstrated to my min 1 last nignt when in answering City A torney Hal-ted Smith’s question, he did not an swer it but shrewdl;- sought to mis lead the audience. Col. Halsted Smith wanted to know about, pri vate contracts made payable in gold if only gold could be used in discharging the obligation. Os course, any one knows, that if a contract was made in which the obligations were to be discharged with so many horses, that, should the matter go into court, and a judgement resulted, an equivalent value in go'd offered, the judge ment would settle it —because the law of the land says that gold spe cie will and shall discharge any and all debts. Hoke is a krafty kuss. * * * Another thing that struck me very forcibly was the good humor of the audi?nce. They were there to see the great and only Hoke’s Myth, ard if the “show” wanted to act circus, they were willing. Hence, when Mr. Smith would spring a joke or krack a chestnut people laughed freely and applaud ed generously. But, when he un dertook to sweep them before him with his grand periods or sway them with his eloquence, why, they were as cold anil unresponsive as if an ice wagon had stampeded through their sentimen’. *,* Hoke is a big man, but Hoke is not, nor will he ever be a states man. He is not built that way. And it’s amusing to see him trying to lead the people of Georgia. Hoke is a good rail-road lawyer and he doubtless suits Mr. Cleve land, and if he will stay in his of fice and earn his sa’ary the people will respect him—when he takes the slump he will find such states men as: Atkinson, Clay, Maddox, Crisp, Bartlett, Bacon and dozens of others who are of the people for the people and with the people and all of them fighting for both gold and silver . *** J B.
