D. 7-1-6 No. THE HUSTLER OF ROME WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2 1805 FOUND THE iWAN _- For Whose Summed Murder They Were Nearly lynched Louisville, October 2.—James and Jacob McKinney, brothers, suspected of having murdered T W. Bennett at Sailor Springs, 11l , and who narrowly escaped lynch ing at the time, have vindicated themselves of the charge by findii g Bennett alive in this city, and re turning t» their native town with their supposed victim. A few years ago, Bennett, who had worked for the McKinney brothers, suddenly disappeared. No one could account far his ab s» nee nor could anybody tell whither ho had gone. Suspicion fell upon the McKin ney brothers, and when, not long after the disappearance, the Mc- Kinney home burned and a man’s bones were found in the wreck, the I citizens were satisfied the remains were those of Bennett, and tne McKinneys were the murderers. Feeling ran so high that only the most urgent protestations were the lives of the McKinneys spared at the hands of a mob. It seems that Bennett had tramped to Mis sissippi after leaving Sailor Spring, and a few weeks ago landed in this citv. His friends are urging the presi dent to pardon him and base then appeal upon the ground chat he is in bad health and will hardly survive his term, but if given his liberty may fully recover . Dawson Tried To Draw a Pistot- He May Die, Selma Ala., Oct. 2.-While trying to’arrest to boisterous n igroasat 11 o’clock last night Chief of Po ic * Lumpsin shot and probably fatal ly wounded Jim, alais Babe, Daw sow. The negroes were drunk and were cursing on one of the princi pal residence streets. As the chief approached them on - ran, whi'e the oth'-r two show ed fight. Dawson threw his Jiand behind him as if to draw a gun and Chief Lumpkin fired, one ball tak big effect in the right leg and on penetrating the liver. Dawson ran half a block and fell. He was car ried to the Hospital. He is a bad negro and has given the police much trouble. Shields Underwood, the young man who returned from Central America and gave himself up to answer the charge of murdering a neg: o ; was today refused bail by Judge Moore, of the circuit court. The case has been transferred to i to tjie city court and a speedy trial ' will be had. The city schools opened today with a total attendance of more than 1,000, the largest enrollment yet reached. The resid nceof John D. Mosely,' on Green street, was destroyed by fire yt sterday morning. It caught from a kitchen flue. The residence of 11. Hawthorn, four blocks away, caught from a flying spark but the fire was ex inguished. The loss o f both buildings and contents is $2,- •500 and is fullly insured.
