THE HUSTLER OFROME SUNDAY OCTOBER 27 1895 A FATAL DUEL. A Freight Brakeman and a Conduc tor Killed Houston, Texas, October 2G.— Charles H. Neville, freight con ductor, and Sidney B. Lane, a brakesman, fought a duel this morning in a narrow hallway lead ing into the office of the train dis patcher of the Southern Pacific. Lane vas instantly killed and Ne ville was mortally wounded. He died tonight. Lane formally worked in Ne ville 8 crew, but the latter object ed to him as an assistant, saying that he refused to obey orders. This angered the brakesman, and he has for some time made threats openly that he intended to kill the conductor. This morning they met at tha entrance to the dis patcher’s office and each pulled a gun and fired five shots, two ta king 'feet in each man. T1 ey then clinched and clubbed each other with the butt end of the pistol*, until Lane sank to the floor, dead, and Neville fell groan Lane was shot through the lower left breast and through the neck One ball passed through Neville's from left to right, going through the liver, and another passed through the left side about the crest of the hip bone. The men were about 40 years of age, Ne ville being married. RIVAL KILLS RIVAL. Wm. Coates Slain by Jno. W. KiTcn en at Danville, 111. Danville, 111., Oct. 26.—Two young men named William Coates and John W. Kitchens have been rivals for some time on account of a young lady named Ella Spang ler. Last evening Kitchen escorted the young lady home After leav ing her he met Coates and two other boys. Coates and Kitchens became involved in an alt< raation when Kitchens drew his revolver and shot Coates through the heart. Kitchen surrendered himself to the Sheriff. He is 17 years old and came here from Chicago four months ago. The Coroner’s Jury made an exhuastive examination of the ease today and recommend ed that Kitchens be held for un justifiable homicide. AN ESCAPE CAUGHT, He was Making Away wifi a Sto len Team When Captured. Dawson, Ga., Oct. 26.—Two notorious characters were captured here late this afternoon by Sheriff Cheriste. One is supposed to be an escaped convict. He was arrested after a long chase for stealing a horse and buggy at Barnesville, Ga. They were described in a tele gram to Sheriff Chtriste and he was on the lookout for them. There was a small reward for their capture. Their names are not known as they have several alias es. A Burned Trestle* Savannah, Oct. 26. —A local freight train, South-bound from Columbia, on the Florida Central & Peninsular railroad, w'as wreck ed four miles from Savannah last night. Some one set fire to a tres tle over a ravine. The trestle sup ports were burned away and four teen cars went down. The cars were burned, as were 420 bales of cotton and other freight. The to tal loss is about $80,090. Two ne groes were injured in the wreck. Debts of a Nobleman. London, Oct. 26.—Sir Robert Peel has compromised with his creditors at 50 per cent. Mrs. Langtry, who. it was rumored about a month ago, was contem p’ating ma r age with Sir Robert as soon as she obtained a divorce from her husband, was among the persons to wliom he was indebted.
