DURRftNT TRIftL. Opening Argument for The State Made by The Ass’t District Attorney San Francisco, Cai., Oct. 26. Assistant District Attorney Peix oto today made the opening argu ment for the prosecution in the trial of Durrant today, When pQUit convened General Dickinson asked that Miss Cunningham be recalled, but she was asked only a few unimportant questions ana then excused. The remainder of the day was occupied by Mr. Piexoto. He dis cussed the evidence in the case from the time Durrant accompa nied Miss Lamoni to school on the morning of April 3 until he ap peared before Organist King in Emanuel Church at 5 o clock in the afternoon, pale, trembling and excited. He clo-ed by asking the jury to uphold the laws of the State by rendering a verdict of guilty and fixing the penalty at death. During Mr. Piexoto’s argument the court-room was crowded. Rev. , J. George Gibson of Emanuel l Church and his secretary, JRobert I Jn. Lynch, occupied seats near the 1 jury box and paid close attention to the speaker. Durrant sat, stolid ’ and indifferent, in his usual place beside his attorneys, surrounded I by his father, mother and a num ber of friends. Durrant betrayed no emotion or feeling, even when accused of murders that were com pared with the cr.mes of Jack the Ripper in the Whitechapel distric of London. His mother, howev er, looked more thoughtful and depressed than she has at other time since the trial .began. when Mr. Piextro closed !his argument, at 3:30 o’clock. Nashville, Tenn., October 26. — Charley Malone and Rebecca Polk, two old negro women, were to-day given two sentences of fifteen months each in the United States’ prison, District Judge Clark pro nouncing the sentence. These women have defrauded the United States government of $20,- 000, which they drew as widows of federal soldiers. They had been living with two negro men and one woman would swear for the other when pension money was due. A Fast Train- Chicago, Oct., 26.—The fastest regular train ever run in the world, aking distance into consideration will begin making its daily trips over the Atchison. Topeka and Santa Fe riilroad on Tuesday, Oc tober 29th. It will leave Chicago at 6 o’clock in the evening, mak ing the run of 2,265 miles in seven ty-four hours, allowing sorta difference in time. Previous to this the fastest reg ular long-distance train in the world wis the California limited of the Chicago and N )rthwest<»rn nd’Union Pacific systems, which made the run from the Chicago to San Francisco, 2,255 miles, in eighty-five hours and fifteen inin u e<.
