AN OHIO SUBSTITUTE FOR HANGING Columbus 0., Feb. 13. —A bi) providing a substitute for hanging will be introduced in the Legisla ture this week. Fwb. 13.—Wil liam Clark, aged 14, of Lancaster and Annie Davidson, aged 15. of Liberty, were married last night. It was with the knowledge and consent of the girl’s father but the bay’s father knew nothing about it. FROM BANK PRESIDENT TO POHTER Chicago, Feb. 13.—James P. Gage, charged with disorderly con duct, was let off with a lecture in the police court today. Two yea s ago he was President of the Clin ton, (la.) National Bank. He lost his fortune, and is now working as a porter in a hotel here. THREE MEN WERE DROWNED. Wins'on, N. C., Feb., 13.—Zib McCollen, Elijah Lemmons, Den nis Gunn and the latter’s son, were drowned Saturday night while attempting to cross Dm River, which was badly swolen, four miles from Stoneville, S. C. Their boddies were found and taken out of the river yesterday. SOLDIERS IN THE PRIZE RING. Omaha’, Feb. 13. —At F>r Omaha, Privates Cavauaugh a' d Murphy were arrested today f engaging in a prize fight, and 10> others, who witnessed the fight ex pect to be ordered to the guard house to-morrow. It has been stated that the two men fought for a purse that was furnished by the officers at the fort, but this is de nied by Col. Bates. While he has no doubt ihat there was a purse in sight, he says he is sure it was not made up by the officers. REWARD OFFERED * Chief Shropshire is in receipt of a circular from the Tennessee Coal Iron & Railway Company offering SIOO reward for the capture of Ben L. Smith and Torn O’Neil, who es caped from prison at Pratt Mines, Ala., Feb. 10, 1896. Smith is 26 years of age, height 5 felt 9 inches, weight about 140 pounds, complexion fair, dark hair and brown eyes. O Ne l is 26 years of age, height 5 feet 11 inches, weight about 165 or 170 pounds, complexion florid, dark hair and gray eyes. Former residence, New York and Canada. He was convicted and sent to the penitentiary for five years in Sep tember, 1895, on the charge of rob bery. Smith was convicted in Birmingham, Ala., June, 1889, for murder and given a life sentence. It is probable that the state of Alabama will also offer a reward for the capture of the men. Dlscharned the lufidol LaFayefe, Ind., Feb. 13.—The school at Koro, Burlington town ship, Carroll County, has been in an up roar for several weeks. The trouble culminated Saturday by the summary dismissal of the eacher, James Bell. It is alleged that’Bell, who is an exceedingly bright teacher, is an infidel, and that it has b?on impossible for him to refrain from attempting to give his pupils the s: me impression of the Bible that he holds himself.
