At that time al matters pertaining to municipal finances must be settled up, and the books balanced. As chairman of the finance com mittee, it is my imperative duty, as well as my earnest desire, to see that every dollar due the city for the year 1895-6, on account of tax es, water rents, and license fees, is collected before the first of April. The management of a city is an intensely business affair. There is very little sentiment or romance about it. If the honor and credit of the city are properly maintained it is absolutely necessary that each citizen do his part in contributing to its financial support. It is sincerely hoped that every one who reads this, and who owes the city money, will take it as a personal appeal to himself to pay at once any balances due, and avoid costs. The city school fund is short, owing to the failure of the late county school commissioner to pay over nearly $2,000 due the city for 1895, and there is the most urgent need for funds to round out the school year of the city schools. Two weeks ago last Saturday night Ganoahak was held up by three men at Luke Fiddler colliery, Shamokin. They demand ed SIOO, which they said he carried. Ganashak declared he had only SHOP REMOVED. News has just reached this city that a schoolhouse 12 miles away, in which a colored school was giv ing a concert, was blown up with dynami'e last Friday night. The schoolhouse was borrowed from the whites for the occasion, as the colored schoolhouse was too small for the crowd expected.
