HE DIED YESTERDAY The Funeral Will occur This Afternoon and Will be ene otthe Largest Attended That Ever Occurred in This City. Capt. Mulford Pepper, Rome’s popular and efficient Postmanter, is dead! What a pall of gloom tho an nouncement of his death cast up. on the hearts of the people of this city when it was made yesterday afternoon. Capt. Pepper breathed his last at about 1:45 yesterday afternoon, and a few moments biter the news was announced on Broad Street. From lip to lip it spread and like adark cloud, the announcement, as it passed along caused every countenance to assume a sombre hue. Mulford Pepper, in the very prime of young manhood, genial, generous, loyal, democratic, a frieud to every good man, with a hand ever ready to help the needy, and a kind wurd for all, cut down in the 40th year of his life, receiv ing the summons just a week to au hour after the remains of his devoted wife were born from a da kened—until then —a most hap py home. Strong men blanched, while tears sprang to the eye of many a citizen, when the news was first broken. No man in Rome had warmer friends or more of them than had Mulford Pepper. No man in th# city will be missed more than he when th3 summons that called him hence, shall be receiv ed. On last Sunday, the day after his wife’s remains had been laid to rest, Capt. Pepper suffered an attact of pneumonia. He had been most devoted to the noble hear'ed wife and the sor row and grief on his mind aggra vated the malady. Or. R. P. Pepper was a member of nearly every order and organization in the city. Being in many of them a high officer, and in all of them a recognized substantial member. Among the mutua' benefit or ders of Rome he held policies in the following : Knights of Honor, |2,00; Legion of Honor, 5,000; Woodmen of the World, $2,000; Knights Os Damon, $5,000 and Royal Arcanum $3,000. THE FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON. The funeral will occur at 3 o’clock this afternoon, from the First Presbyterian church, and the exercises will be conducted, first by Rector C. B. Hudges, of St. Peters, assisted by Dr. Goetch iu?, of the First Presbyterian, af ter which the remains will be ta ken in charge by the Knichts Templar, who will conclude the services. One of the most impressive fea tures of the funeral ceremony will be the fact that the every detail, in music, choir,ministers, organess and church will be a reproduction of the services held, just eight days prior, over the remains of his noble hearted and lamented wife. Austin, Tex., March 28 —There is talk here of a political move, which, if succcessful, will prob w ablyheel Texas into the re publican presidential list es states this year. An effort is to be made to have the republicans and populists fuee, the* republicans, to support the populist tickets for all state offi cers upon condition that the re publican electors are placed on the populist ballots. The impor tance of such a combination if accomplished Jean be seen from the following figures: The vote of the state two years ago stood : Culberson, democrat, 207,167. Nugent, populist, 153,- 731; Makemson, republican 54,. 520; Schlitz, lily white republi can 5,025. These figures show that the opposition to dernoeracy two years ago had a majority of over 5,000. The defections since then have greatly increased the number. The fusion movement was put on foot at Dallas two weeks age by 'Edward Green, president of lhe Midland r ilroad ; Judge W. K, Makem-on, and. other promi nent republicans and populism The populist say that the fusion will undoubtedly be made. e LDBUOB WILL BOLT. DaLas, Tex., March 28. — A meet’ng of sound money demo crats was held here today in whica about 200 prominent politicians took part. I hey practically deter mined to bolt the party if a free silver platform is adopted by the State convention, which action appars to be a foregone conclu sion. The meeting passed resolutions favoring the calling of a state con vention of sound money democrats to consid'-r the situation. Chair man Dudley, of the state execuJE tibe committee, was bitterly de nounced. Resolutions declaring in favor of the gold standa'd were adopted.
