Atkinson for pardon, one. Walter S. Beresford now doing time in the State convict camp at Kramer. Beresford is a “slick duck,” and I doubt seriously it Governor Atkinson will turn him out. But Beresford is so well ad vertised as a “smooth” youi g man, that its my opinion, that it anyone in Georgia is willing to be “gulled” by him now, I think Berystord ought to hate a chance. After all, I guess the young rasca l has suffered quite enough for the individual offence that put him in •tripes. * * * Hoke Smith said in his Rome •peech that Judge Maddox was one •f the most useful, energetic and hard working democrats in con gress. And especially did Mr. Smith praise “Our Jotin” for his effici ency on Indian affairs. Hoke is recognized as the leading gold bug of Georgia, too. But, heie at home, we find a few of our-gold bug friends just pasting it onto Judge Maddox, a: d this too when there is no gold-bug candidate be fore the people. I say, the lest time I heard from Mr.- Smith he was speaking most commendably of ‘Judge Maddox —but this was .a few months ago. In the mean time Mr. Smith may have heard from the Roman gold-bugs and bis olastic mind experienced a change. Wno knows! * * * The Pinkertons might be able to locate the head quarters of the mystic “Reformer’s”—but com mon every day democratic citizens are not smooth enough to ferrit it out. * * * “ Reform Club” is a correct name for them. They have rallied under many other oanners and suffered as many defeats, now they “re i form” their lines behind “mask ed” batteries and prepare to “do it again.” Content? Why bless your standing in the neighbor hood, these boys would not be happy any wherejelse except in the minority, rule or ruin camp. Its a habit fastened on them by custom. * * * I cant see why anybody wants to loap onto my friend, Fletcher Snitb, just because Mr. Smith wanted his money from a stranger for whom he had worked. When Mr. Smith found that Mr. Erhart had left the city he naturally took steps to recover the amount of his bill for job work . I don’t know I Mr. Erhart personally, and cer tainly have no ill will towards him. He is one of the most frank, most fearless men I have ever known and —he is the best job printer and book binder in North Georgia, if not in die State. Carpenter plead ed guilty in the criminal branch supreme court yesterday {of the charge of bribery made against him. Justice Keogh sentenced him to three months in the city prison, and to pay a fine of $1,500. The case against ex-Cap'. Camente grew out of the Lexow investiga tion. DROWNED IN MID-OCEAN. i Wheeling, W. Va., May 15. — Word was received today of the drowning at sea of Henry G. Davis, Jr., son of Ex-Senator Henry G. Davis and brother-in-law of Seua or S ephen B. Elkins, Davis had taken a cruise to South Africa for his heath and was accidental ly drowned in mid-ocean. ACCIDENT TO A WIRE PERFORMER. N»w York, May 15.—Ben Ab dulah, the slack-wire performer, who fell twenty-five s u et from his wire last night while performing in Haminerstein’< Olympia, was reported as in a serious condition this morning at Roosevelt Hospital He is believed to have sustained a fracture of the skull. FOUR KILLED BY LIGHTENING. Cadiz, Ky., May 15. —John I. Wallace, a farmer of Trigg county, and his three sons, aged twenty eighteen and six, were killed by lightning twelve miles South of place, Monday afternoon. Their bodies were found under a tree by Mrs. Wallace, who went out to hunt for them.
