'23.—Police man Robert Carey early yesterday morning shot and killed a thief named John O’Brien. Carey and Policeman Becker saw O Brien and two pals steal out of a store. The police at once gave chase. Becker shouted to them to stop and fired at O’Brien, but did not stop him. "Stop, or I’ll shoot,” yelled Carey. “Shoot.” cried O Brien. The writer saw Mr. Whiteside in his now famous first perform ance in New York when at one i stroke he rose from an obscure f country actor to the high pinnacle of national tame. Mr. Whitei-ide’s “Hamlet” is his own. He patterns after no one- He has considerably improved since his first metropolitan appear ance. Especially is this so of his movements and gestures, every one of which is an expression of sentiment. Each word denotes suppressed feeling, each glance h&s its studied meaning. His voice is well suited to the part and his diction is perfect. Altogether Whiteside’s “Ham let” will go down in history as the peer of anything of this gen ira tion. * Miss Lucia Moore, as Oph-lia, ranked next to Mr. Whiteside and elicited deserved ipplause by her artistic rendering of the crazed or phan. It is to be regretted that the stage was too small to allow of tie setting of their speciel scen ery. Mau Be a Widow Again. Bridgeport, Conn., Sept. 23. Last night Benjamin Fish, of this city, a cousin of Mrs. Nancy Bar-, num Callias, the widt wof P. T. Barnum, received a telegram from United States Treasurer Morgan, stating .that according to a cable gram received from Minister Ter rell, at Constantinople, Cal lias Bey was dying in Constantinople. Mrs. Callias is now on the wa vto join her husband, having left New York early in 'he week. She married about a year ago, but came back to this country alone a few weeks ago, and denied the story' of an estrangement be tween hersslf and her husband.
