Rome pub„ic sph'/da met yester
day afternoon tc discutß the col
ored sch.ool prol’emr'i
At this meeting, while the mat
ter w<as gone iu'o from every point
of the compass, it wa? finally de
cided to secure a school room for
the 7th caod Bth grades, of the
colored sqhoola, taught byPrincipal
Dent, and declare a vacation in
the other grades until Jan. 1 1897.
Tii’A seemed the most practical
way out of the difficulty, occasipp
ed by the burning of the colored
school building By persuing this
course th’’-graduating class would
hr enabled to finish its work on
time, whi'e the b'her grades c uld
be taught on into the. summer
moiitns and make up the lost
lime.
Alter the meeting, late yester
day afternoon, upon being apprised
or the course the board had, for
lack of school rooms tor the color
ed schools, been forced to persue,
the pastors and officers of the col
ored churches of the city, through
Principal Dent, of the colored
schools, tendered President Wil
liamson the free use of all colored
churches in the city. This sacrifice
on the part of the colored churchps
puts a new face on the matter,, and
President Williamson has caHed a
meeting*of,the Board to cotfsider
the matter, this afternoon. ‘

To the patrons-'-of the Rome Pu' -
lie Schools :. r
Great injury comes to your chil
dren from their loil'Uug to and.
from schools. In the m-nning no !
pupil except the grkduatiiig class
are permitted ,to<enter theiachoo
building before fifteen minutes be
fore nine o’clock, and pupils
who are permitted to leave their
homes too early are exposed to the
danger of bad associates whose con
duct canijot be reached or ierne
died by the school discipline.
Not only so, but often in unfa
vorable weather, girls and buys
standing on the streets in the cold
and damp waiting for the schooj
doors to open, sustain serious inju
ry t» health. Parents are warned
that nc matter how severe the
weather our rules forbid the pupilg
entering their grades before the
teacher, and they are U'ged not tQ
allow their chi aren to leave home
before such time aij will enable
them by steady walking to reach
the shoo! at 9 o’clock.
I beg all parents to give promp
and full attention to this matter.
The health and morals of your
children will be promoted if they
are trained to leave and return
home at certain hours,
prevent delays on the s'reets whrcn
expose them at once to bad weath
er and worse associates.
Rt spectfully,
J. 0. Harris.
