Columbus, Dec. 12.—From Sea right. Ala., come the details of a most shocking assault upon the pt-rson of Miss Minnie Martin, of this city, while on a visit to friends that p ace- The assault was committed by Geoige Dunstan, a saloonkeeper and livery stable man a Searight Dunst»n was empojed to bring the young lady from the country iitoS aight. where she was to take the Mobile and Girard train to return home. While on the way Dunstan over powered me girl, who is alnnst an invalid from c nsumption, and committed an assault. This sec tion of the country is sparsely populated, and the man had every opportunity to carry out his de signs. More than once he is said to have carried out his diabolical purpose,and when he finally agreed to carry her into the town she was forced to make a promise no' to tell whi.t had taken place, and to agree also to al ow him to come to her room at the hotel. " hen the hotel was reached the proprietor, Mr. John Bulls, at once discovered there was some thing wrong, and when the girl was questioned she told all. A room was assigned her and this Dunstan attempted to enter, and when the proprietor endeavored io preventithe was badly beaten over the head, after which Dun stan left. The report of the out rage on the girl spread rapidly, and theie whs much talk of a lynching, but the well known des perate and dangerous character of t nß man wh<> was charged wuh the crime prevented the carrying out of the threat. He was known to be well armed and succeeded in escaping. Dun stan was a Mason, and it is said he appealed to his lodge for pro tection until he cou'd establish his innocence. Yesterday the lodge held a meeting and expelled him. They also decided to raise a reward of 1500 for his arrest and to ask the governor of Alabama to also offer a similar sum. It is not be lieved that Dunstan has left the country, although repor s reached here that he was in Coffee county with friends and Winchesters, and that he would be killed before he would submit to arrest. He has a wife and chi dren, two of them being daughters almost grown. While he was known to be ' a desperate man, his friends did Rot believe that he could be guilty of perpetrating a crime like this. The young lady, who stands High in social and church circles, has been brought, to her home in this city and is now under the medical treatment of Dr. S. J. byhe, who says that on account of her nalura.ly delicate constitu tion she will b- a long while get ting well. Miss Martin’s parents live at Laurel Hill, Alu. Many recommendations have been mad < by small special com mittees for their pardon, but this is the first time that the entire penitentiary committee evt r unit ed to secure their re ease. The letter of Dr. Bush, principle •hys cian to the penitentiary, which was presented, to the gov ernor a few d ys ago, has had great influence. Dr. Bush reported that Harry Hill was already a physical wreck and in danger of chronic disease if he was not re leased. shortly. ? The opinion is general that both men have been amply pun ished. Beresford seems t > be in no bet ter condition physically tha” Har ry Hill. Friends of Loth men will no t lose an opportunity to pull an oar for their pardon. The governor has not made up his uitnd when,he will hear the arguments publicly for the release of Hill and Beresford, but he wi.l act promptly on the petitions for public hearings as soon as they are presented. It is probible that the public hearing on Harry HiD’s ca-e will be had next. week. —Constitution. City Court Tomorrow The December t«rm of the city court begins tomorrow. Judge Harris has a long list of criminal cases to dispose of first among which will be gaming cases. The docket is a formidable look ing array for the solicitor general to tackle. Yost Gets His Seat, Bichmond, Va., Dec. 12.—The supreme court of appeals yester day handed down a decision in the Yost mandamus case. The decision compels the election officers of Buckingham county to correct t leir election returns, thus nu king changes in the count in the Tenth Congressional district, which wHI give the certificate to Goet, Repub ican, instead of Flood, Democrat, tc whom the Sta e can vassing board had decided to award the certificate. Jl—The loss of life by the foundering of the North German L'oyd steamer Salier, which sank in Corunna Corrubeda shoals, in the gale that swept the At’nn ic coasts of Europe early this week, is now positively known to have been much greater than at first supposed. A dispatch from Corunna to The Cologne Gazette ssys that the number of persons lost by the foundering of the North German Lloyd steamer Salier mav possibly be as high a* five hundred The Gazette’s correspondent says that the ship had on board 219 passengers when she left Antwerp and embarked a great many more at the various Spa. ish ports she touched at. The char acter of the Salier’s wreckage, which has already been washed ashore, indicates that tie s'eamer quickly went to pieces. London, Dec. 12.—German ship Bajah, Captain Be imar; from Bar ry, Wales, for Hpng Kong, has foundeered in the Bristol channel. Two of her crew have been pick ed up. Seventeen others, compris ing the remainder of the crew, were drowned. Bajah was an ironclad vesse 1 of 1,230 tons. She built at Liver pool in 1864, and was owned by D. Schilling. 6f Bremen.
