Three cars Demolished. Fire Fol lowed at once. 150 Po lice not Sufficient. Boston, Mass., March 5 - -An explosion of gas which leaked from the two gr-at six-inch mains : which cross the subway at the 1 corner of Tremont and Boylston i streets, killed six persons, injured , two others fatally and nearly fifty | other persons seriously, at 11:45 o’clock yes’erday. A boom like that of a cannon was followed by smoke which seemed to arise from the very ■ bowels of the earth, and then Hames shot upward and blazed in | the midst of the thoroughfares j where there is more travel than anywhere else in a given section of tbe city. In an instant sixteen horses lay dead on the pavement, panic stricken passengers were endeav oring to escape for their lives from the interior of the burning cars, and steam fire engines were on the scene pouring tons of wa ter upon the rapidly disappearing cars. The glaas in the buildings was shattered along Tremont street as far as LaGrange street and North beyemd the Tremont theatre to Washington street and West almost to Park square. HOW THE EXP IOS HIX OCCURRED The explosion cause just as 'three cars were almost in the cen ' ter of the space at the corner. I Ihe first named car was precse ily in the center when the expios -1 ion came. The whole of the wood en work which is used as a bridge over the deep hole at this point was lifted with a frightful rear in to the air, carrying the first named car with it and taking along the two horses of the sec ond car. The other vehicles were lifted into the air. Instantly the air was ti ed with flying debris, and above the shouts of terror-stricken pedestrians could be heard thel groans and cries of the wounded J The first electric car, the one in which most of the people were killed fell back upon the track and broke in halves. FIRE FOLLOWET DA ONCE. The portions immediately burst into flames. Then some one sound ed a fire alarm and calls for the ambulance. A squad of 250 policemen were insufficient to keep back the thou sands of people who rushed in from all sides, and it was only by giving a false alarm of a second explosion that they were able to drive back the crowds and rope off the street. Only Ten Feet Away. An attempt was made to assassi nate Mr. Sam Doss last night. Mr. Doss lives on Dr. Met all’s! farm down in North Carolina dis-; trict. He was in the city yesterday) and instead of returning to his went <>ut to Mr. Will Glo sier’s house on Mr. Dallis Turner’s farm. • About 8 o'clock he heard some one call him. He W. nt out of the house to See who it was and as he turned the corner ther- was afl »sh. That corner of the house was fil ed with buck shot. Another shot was fired part of the charge pass ing through his trousers. He quickly drew his revolver, a a little 82, and returned their fire. When they saw he was game tfeey turned and fled into the darkness. It was only by a miracle that he saved his life as the assassins were only about 10 feet away from him when the attempt at mur der was committed. It transpired later that another stt of men had been awaiting his return at his own home. I Recently he was put under bond to answer the charge of seduciion The victim is alleged to have been a Miss Hanna, daughter of Mr. L M. Hanna. She was regarded at a most esti mable young lady and the belle of the section until the recent trou ble. Recedtly Doss brought her to the city and carried her before Judge Walter Harri 1 ' to swear her guilt to another man. The denoument almost stag gered Judge Harris, who, when he heard her statement as to the guilt of her lover, and his attempt ut treachery, put him under I ond to answtr her charge. March 4.—A sad incident in which Levy Cox. a 14- year-old boy, waa the victim oc curred in this vicinity a few dayn ago. In some manner the lad obtain ed possession of a jug boutaiuing a half gallon of whiskey. The boy placed the jug to his lips and im b:bed pretty freely of the con tents. The whiskey took effect directly, and notbeingable to hold 1 the earthen vessel any longer, he called a negro to his assistance. While the neuro held the jug to the box s mouth the liquor was |gu.ped down hurriedly. In a short time Cox was seized with convu'- sious and died. It is not known how much of tie whiskey he drank but it seems he swallowed enough to cause his death. BUCKLED HIS WHEEL Rob Yancy was run into late yesterday afternoon by a wagon while riding his bicycle down Broad St. His front wheel was badly smashed. Fitzgerald, Ga., March . —The city council held a specia' session yesterday afternoon to decide the franchis'’ question. The session was stormy and lasted from 2 until 7 o’clock. In the end an exclusive franchise was granted to Sidney Lascelles, “Lord Beresford,” for the electric light, gas and waterworks for a term of twenty years.
