Patrolling The

FAREWELL: Governor Ernest
F. “Futz” Hollings of South Caro
lina made a dramatic gesture in
his address of farewell to the
States legislature. Unsuccessful
in his attempt to unseat United
States Senator Olin D. Johnson
and ineligible to succeed himself
in office Governor Hollings is tem
porarily sidelined in the Palmetto
political pot-boilings. However,
in leaving, his farewell may be of
more significance than was his
four years tenure of office. The
address urged the states lawmak
ing body to peacefully accept racial
desegregation in the state. More
significant was the applause given
him by the legislators at the end
of the speech. In spite of the fact
that he waited until any powers
granted him had expired, it is a
resounding truth that interposi
tion, legal motions, sovereignty
and all personal defiance have
been applied against desegration
and all have failed. Governor
Hollings words were “we must
move on for the good of South
Carolina and the United States.
This should be done with dignity
and with law and order.” ... We
still have doubts about those legis
lators applauding him. Was it
for his speech or for his leaving
office ?

stopped calmly served himself and
in separate plates shared his meal
with the Negro companion, then
paid the bill and left. Neither of
the guests were personally identi
