175th Joint Anniversary Celebration
The 175th Joint Anniversary of
the First African and the First
Bryan Baptist Churches will be
held on Sunday afternoon, Jan
uary 20th, 1963, in the main au
ditorium of the First African Bap
tist Church, Franklin Square. This
joint anniversary celebration draws
large crowds of people each year,
and special arrangements have
been in progress for weeks to bring
Hie city of Savannah one of the
most unique programs presented
for such a celebration.
The Dr. Joseph A. Johnson, the
dynamic speaker of Atlanta, Geor
gia, who only recenty brought our
Emancipation Day Celebration Ad
dress, will bring the message for
this memorable occasion. Dr.
Johnson at present is serving as
Professor of the New Testament,
Director of Religious Service and
Chairman of the Committee on
Graduate Studies at the interde
nominational Theological Center,
Atlanta, Georgia. He is a writ
er, a dynamic preacher, and a
forceful speaker. He is in great
demand for public appearance and
we feel very fortunate to have
St. Phillip Mon.
AME Church
Sunday was a day of inspira
tion at St. Phillip Monumental
AME Church, beginning with Sun
day School at 10 P.M., Mrs. A.
11. S. Bargeron, superintendent, in
charge.
We were delightfully blessed in
having Evangelist Edith B. Wil
liams of Chicago, Illinois worship
with u£ throughout Sunday. She
poured out her soul as she de
livered the messages throughout
the day. Climaxing the services
Sunday night she preached from
the subject, “Consider Your
Ways,” using as a high point,
“God wants us to turn the flash
lights on the inside.” We were
grateful for this much needed
moment of revival.
The Junior, Progressive and
Gospel Choirs rendered music for
the day. .
On Wednesday evening of this
week Pastor Jaudon. and the con
gregation will worship with First
Bryan Baptist Church-;, Rev. R. M.
Williams, pastor, in observance of
their 175th anniversary.
Members of the . planning com
mittee are urged’ l to meet at the
church Thursday evening to dis
cuss plans for the benefit of the
Spring Drive.
God’s blessings are asked for
all sick, shut in and less fortunate.

St. James
AME Church
“I Know A Man” was the theme
of the forceful sermon delivered
by the Rev. A. L. Washington,
minister of the St. James AME
Church, on last Sunday morning.
The spirit filled message was well
received by an appreciative aud
ience which included several visi
tors. Among them was Rev. J. W.
Maxwell, retired AME ministers,
who made remarks of encourage
ment.
: Last rites were held on Monday
afternoon for Mrs. Irene Hamilton,
one of the faithful members of St.
James AME Church, who passed
last week. Her place in the Senior
Choir of the church in which she
so dutifully served will be vacant,
but the memory of her devotion
to her church, and her kind and
loving ways will be long remem
bered by the membership of St.
James, who extend sincere and
heartfelt sympathy to her family.
Members and friends are urged
to attend the services at St. James.
Sunday School meets on Sunday
mornings at 10 a.m., morning wor
ship at 11:30 a.m. and evening
service at 7:30 P.M. Class meet
ings are held each Tuesday night.
Let us attend and make 1963 a
banner year for St. James.
Remember to visit the sick and
shut in members, and say a pray
er for their recovery.

The Deacons of the First Con
gregational Church will sponsor a
program at the church, Taylor and
Habersham Streets, Sunday, Jan
uary 20, at six o’clock.
Mr. John Q. Jefferson, a grad
uate of Talladega College, and
manager of the American Home
Mutual Insurance Company, will
be the main speaker.
Among other interesting fea
tures of the program will be a
vocal solo by Mrs. Bertha Doyle,
accompanied by her daughter,
Elaine.

Bunn Memorial
Baptist To
Observe Men's
and Women's Day
On Sunday evening, January
20th at 7:30 o’clock, the Bunn
Memorial Baptist Church at the
corner of Harmon and Joe Streets,
will be the scene of a unique pro
gram which has been arranged in
observance of Men’s and Women’s
Day. The pastor and each mem
ber of the church are extending
a warm invitation to all of their
friends to please avail themselves
of the opportunity to worship
with them at this time. It is felt
that those who find it possible
to attend this program which has
been planned for one hour, will
be richly rewarded for having done
so. Miss Paulette Sibert will be
guest reader of the evening and
others appearing on the program
will be Miss Bernice Dawson and
Miss Edwina Joiner. Co-chairmen
of this activity are Mrs. S. D.
Steele and Deacon Moses Houston.

celebrate the 48th anniversary of
the church and the eighth anniver
sary of the pastor, Rev. D. D. Hen
derson, with series of services be
ginning Monday night, January
21, continuing through Monday
night, January 28.
