Mrs. Kathleen Thomas and
daughter “Kay” of East Park Ave.
were hostesses during the past
weekend to Mrs. Lottie Watkins
an ddaughters, Joyce Bacot and
Judy of Atlanta. Mrs. Watkins
who has the distinction of being
selected Atlanta’s Bronze Woman
of the year is president of Wat
kins Enterprises. She also holds
the honor of being elected to serve
on the Democratic Committee of
Atlanta. Also honored at the
Thomasses lovely party was Vai
Jean Truitt, directress of the Vai
Mar Dance Group of Atlanta.
We send congraulations to Irma
Fields (Mrs. Alphonso) who has
been promoted to the position of
principalship. Mrs. Fields who
has been our Jeanes Supervisor
for the past few years, has been
named principal of the R. W.
Gadsden Elemental;/ School. She
succeeds Frankie Golden Ellis,
who is leaving for Texas to com
plete work on her doctorate. To
all concerned, we again send con
gratulations and best wishes for
success.
So sorry to hear that Mr. Sam
Jones of West 42nd Street is a
patient at the Central of Georgia
Hospital. To Mr. Jones and to his
lovely wife Belle, we send our
prayers.
Just heard about the success of
the son of a former Savannahian,
now living in Atlanta. William
Odum, son of Mrs. Arie Odum-
Morland of Gideon Drive, S. W.
has received notice of satisfactory
completion of the requirements for
the master’s degree at Columbia
University, New York City. Mr.
Odum, a Morehouse College grad
uate before entering Columbia
hears the music department at
Archer High School, Atlanta.
Prior to his Atlanta assignment
he headed the music department
at Lemons Street High School,
Marietta, Georgia. The talented
Mr. Odum heads his own music
aggregation after school hours,
and the “Bill Odum Quintette,” is
most popular with Atlanta’s social
whirl. His aggregation played re
cently for Republican Centennial
Banquet at the City Auditorium.
Odum’s mother is the former
Arie Meyer of this city. He is the
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. C. A.
Meyer of West Victory Drive, and

to his proud family, we send con
gratulations.
Our own Benjamin Lewis of
West Victory Drive, has been re
cently appointed superintendent of
the parcel post annex at the 39th
and Bull Street branch of the U.
S. Post Office. We feel that this
is quite an honor and distinction.
In fact it is history in Savannah,
as Mr. Lewis is the first Negro
so honored here. I am as thrilled
as can be, as I have always said
that “Ben” Lewis, is one of my
favorites. He is polite, accom
plished, thrifty, and dependable. I
am sure that he will do well. To
him and to his lovely wife, Na
dine, we send a load of congratula
tions and best wishes.
Just heard about W. Dickerson
Donnelly, former Savannahian,
now Fisk University’s Alumni
Secretary. Mr. Donnelly’s itiner
ary dating February 8 through
March 5 is taking him via plane
from Nashville to New York,
Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland,
Dayton, Indianapolis, Cincinnati,
and Louisville. Stopping at the
Sheraton Hotels in each city. I
am sure that his experiences will
be delightful.
Dr. Allan Knight Chalmers,
president of the NAACP Legal
Defense and Educational Fund,
while here to address the 54th an
niversary mass meeting of the
organization, was the house guest
of the Ben Adams (Bessie) of
West 38th Street.
The Falcon Club, Inc. had its
first “Open House” on the past
weekend. This popular private
club has a “by-invitation-member
ship.” Some of our finest young
men are members. We send our
congratulations. Their new Coun
try Club is very lovely. They are
holding another “Open House,”
this Saturday and Sunday. Their
friends are invited. It is in the
Sandfly section. Lets go!
The Les Socialettes met on last
Saturday evening with Ruth Daise
(Mrs. Joseph at her home on Por
ter Street. Pit was the game of
the evening and a delectable re
past was enjoyed by the members.
Prize winners were Helen B.
Gresham and Vernedia Johnson.
Ruth was a most gracious hostess.

Janice Johnson
Feted
Miss Janice Johnson was feted
by her mother, Mrs. Gertrude D.
Johnson, with a “Sweet Sixteen”
birthday party on Saturday, Feb
ruary 9, at the Tompkins Recrea
tion Center.
The center was attractively dec
orated with cupids and hearts,
hither and yon, to set the guests
in the Valentine mood as they dan
ced to the delightful music of
James Brown and his orchestra.
The color scheme of red and
white was uniquely carried out in
the serving. There were red and
white heart-shaped sandwiches,
party squares and punch. The cen
ter of attraction was a beautiful
three-tiered birthday cake with a
red and white decorations bearing
sixteen candles and the inscrip
tion, “Happy Birthday, Janice,
Sweet Sixteen”.
More than one hundred teen
agers helped Janice to celebrate.
Among them were Melda Thomp
son, Wilmotine Blaker, Freida Mc-
Dew and her guest, Sharon Max
well, all of whom are attending
Boggs Academy, and Jimmy Wells
who is attending school in South
Carolina.
Assisting Mrs. Johnson were
Mesdames Matilda D. Rivers,
Janie D. Jennings, Jane Dingle,
Cassie Densler, Gertrude Sanders,
Eunice Simmons and Miss Laura
Densler.
Janice was the recipient of many
lovely gifts.

Melodaires
In keeping with the changing
tmie, and the celebration of Delta’s
Golden Anniversary year, the local
Deltas have a special treat in
store for the Savannah community.
Many people have been inquir
ing about Jabberwock, formerly
an annual variety show presented
by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
The Deltas this year will pre
sent the Manhattan Melodaires in
stead of the Jabberwock. The
Manhattan Melodaires, America’s
foremost and favorite concert art
ists featuring New York’s finest
artists in a broad scope of musical
entertainment.
The important date is March 21,
8:30 p.m. at Beach High School
Auditorium.
The group includes 7 outstand
ing soloists who will entertain you
with folk, popular, contemporary
and classical music. Let all of us
make it a date to be present on
March 21, at Beach High School
Auditorium.
Robert Henson is tenor soloist
of the group, he received a music
degree from the University of Ak
ron. Robert has been associated
with Perry Como, Mahalia Jack
son, Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Nat
King Cole TV Show and has been
tenor soloist and assistant conduct
or of the Belafonte Singers.

Exhibits Art
Critique
An unusual exhibition, “Beaude
laire Critique d’ Art,” will be on
display at the Savannah State Col
lege Library from Sunday, Febru
ary 3rd to Friday, February 15th.
The exhibition includes repro
ductions of famous paintings by
Leonard de Vinci, Rembrandt,
Michelangelo, Pierre Puget, An
toine Watteau, Francisco Goya,
and Eugene Delacroix with criti
cisms of each work by the nine
teenth century French romantic
poet, Charles Baudelaire. Al
though the exhibition has intrinsic
value as great art alone, it also
will be of great interest to the
lovers of the French language,
for the critique is in Beaudelaire’s
native tongue, French.
The public is invited to view the
exhibition during regular library
hours.
