RELIGION: A Negro minister
who holds the second ranking of
fice in the Presbyterian Church
may head that body next year.
The Reverend Elder G. Hawkins,
pastor of the St. Augustine Church
of New York for the past quartei
century has been nominated by
the New York body as its candi
date for Moderator of the Genaral
Assembly of the United Presby-
terian Church, the highest elective
office in the denomination. The
New York group is a hundred
and twenty churches of the de
nomination and has been headed
by Reverend Hawkins for two one
year terms, the first time for a
Negro minister. The Presbytery
usually nominates two to four min
isters each year for the post from
different sections of the country
but so far no other nominees have
been named. Dr. Herman L. Tur
ner of Atlanta now heads the body-
having won over Reverend Haw
kins as his vice moderator. Dr.
Turner (white) may be remember
ed as one of the chief advocates
of the “Atlanta manifesto.” The
general assembly of the three and
a quarter million members meets
in Oklahoma City next May.

POLITICS: Harry Sykes, a
Negro Bowling Alley operator is
a city commissioner in Lexington,
Kentucky. He became the first
Negro to hold the office in a re
cent election where seven other
candidates sought the four com
mission seats of the city. The
Sykes plan call for Negroes vot
ing in the election to cast only one
ballot; that for him, equalizing

Local NAACP To Hear Rev. Julius
Hope, Sunday November 17
Rev. Julius Hope
W. W. Law. local and state pres
ident of the NAACP, announced
at last Sunday’s mass meeting that
Reverend Julius Caesar Hope of
Brunswick, Georgia, one of the
vice presidents of the state con
ference of NAACP branches, will
be the principal speaker at next
Sunday’s meeting. Mr. Law also
announced that the current “Mrs.
NAACP” contest will climax next
Sunday with a coronation for the

p.m., Rev. R. V. Scott is the pas
tor of the church.
Rev. Hope is pastor of the Zion
Baptist Church and president of
the Brunswick, Georgia, branch of
the NAACP. He recently made an
unsuccessful attempt to capture a
seat on the Brunswick city com
mission. He has led the attack on
segregation in his city, resulting
in lunchcounter desegregation, in
tegration of the schools and other
facilities, without demonstrations,
court orders or boycotts.
The public is invited to attend.
Mrs. NAACP To Be Crowned Sunday
A coronation will highlight this
Sunday’s mass meeting, to be held
at 4:00 p.m. at Mt. Bethel Baptist
Church.
The program commences the
NAACP 63-64 fall membership
drive, headed by Mrs. Frances
Green, Savannah branch member
chairman.
Contestants, Mrs. W. B. Battie,
Mrs. L. Noble, Mrs. F. Hunter,
Mrs. R. White. Mrs. M. Moxley,
and Mrs. L. M. Pinkey, of which
one, in addition to her crowning,
will receive as first prize: A round
trip ticket to the NAACP 1964
national convention in Washing
ton, D. C. Second prize: A hand
made bag, presented by Harden
Bros. Shoe Store.

Mrs. Minnie Holland Smith diet
November 4, 1963. She was born
February 7, 1898 to the late Joseph
H. Holland and Elizabeth Riggs
Holland of Cobbtown, Ga. She
was educated in the county schools
of Cobbtown, Georgia and was
graduated from Dorchester Aca
demy. For many years she served
as an elementary school teacher in
Cobbtown and Manassas, Georgia.
She was married to Mr. Roose
velt Smith and from this union
were born four children; Mrs. Lois
Russell, Mrs. Euris Bryant, Mr.
Frank Smith and Mr. Paul Smith.
In 1944 she was baptized as a
Catholic in the Most Pure Heart
of Mary Catholic Church and was
a faithful communicant. She re
ceived the last rites of the Church
prior to her death.
A Solemn Requiem Mass was
offered for her reposed soul Sat-
urday, November 9 in the Most
Pure Heart of Mary Catholic
Church, 902 West 36th Street, mak
ing the first time this Mass was
said in the church with three
priests participatinng. The Rev
erend Father John V. Mulvey,
S.M.A. of the parish, served as the
celebrant. Father Brendan Doo
ley, 0. S. B. of the Sacred Heart
Parish served as Deacon and
Father Denis J. Begley, S.M.A. of
St. Anthony Parish, served as Sub
Deacon. The mass was sung by
Father Lawrence Lacree of the
Cathedral of St. John Parish, as
sisted by Mr. William B. Lain,
Jr. of the Sacred Heart Parish,
and principal of Henry Street
School. The organ accompanist
was Mr. Julius Stevens, a com-

Charlotte Griner Telfair, R.N. as
the new Director of Nurses at
Charity Hospital.
Mrs. Telfair is a graduate of
the Dickerson’s High School of
Vidalia, Georgia, the Charity Hos
pital and Training School For
Nurses and has done post-grad
uate work at Grady Hospital of
Nursing, Atlanta, Georgia and the
University Hospit a 1, Augusta,
Georgia.
Airs. Telfair has served as night
supervisor of nurses at Charity
Hospital for a number of years
and is well qualified for her new
position.
