Six Men
Elevated In
St. Matthews
On Sunday, December 1, 1963,
St. Matthews Protestant Episcopal
Church held the annual election
of members to the church’s Vestry
Board. The members of the parish
feels that the cream of the crop
was picked to serve the church
for the next three years. Those
elected .were as follows; Mr. James
Stafford, Mr. Howard N. Lee, Mr.
Willie Fleming, Mr. Joseph Greene,
Mr. Augustus Sharp, and Mr. Ed
ward Fletcher, who will serve out
the unexpired term of the late
Mr. Edward Law. These men are
considered junior members of the
vestry board and for the first year
will be exposed to the initimate
workings of the church, while be
ing groomed by senior members
of the board. A great deal of in
terest was shown in this election
and the race was tight right down
to the wire before the above nam
ed six men were finally victorious.

As all others, St. Matthews is
very proud of its St. Augustine’s
Guild, which has done a great deal
in contributing to the growth and
development of the church. It is
comprised of a group of energetic
women of the church, who con-

their load, along with the other
organizations.
At the conclusion of extensive
preliminary planning by chairmen
of Women’s organizations of form
er St. Stephen’s and St. Augus
tine’s Churches, the women of these
churches were incorporated into
one strong body, The Woman’s
Auxiliary of St. Matthews Protest
ant Episcopal Church. With zest
and enthusiasm, this body of
church women then divided them
selves into four guilds.
In order to perpetuate the names
of beloved churches, this group
selected the name of St. Augus
tine’s. This took place in August,
1944.
The first meeting of St. Au
gustine’s Guild of St. Matthews
Protestant Episcopal Church, was
held on September 22, 1944. The
first slate of officers were as fol
lows: Mrs. G. P. Broughton; chair
man, Mrs. W. B. Taylor; Vice
chairman, Miss Virginia Smith;
secretary, Mrs. T. V. Monroe; trea
surer, Mrs. Alvena Haslam; U.T.O'.
secretary, and Mrs. Vivian Staf
ford; sunshine secretary.
The officers and members pledg
ed themselves to execute the pur
pose of the Woman’s Auxiliary,
which is to unite the women of
the church into a program of wor
ship, study, service, gifts, and fel
lowship and to deepen their spiri
tual lives for service in our church,
community, the Diocese, the Na
tion, and the world.
St. Augustine’s Guild partici
pates in all phases of the program
of the Episcopal Church Women
of St. Matthews Protestant Episco
pal Church.
The initial membership total 50,
but due to various reasons, the
active membership now totals 30
members. The present slate of
officers are as follows: Mrs. Bertha
Thompkins; chairman; Mrs. Roxie
Owen vice chairman, Miss Johnnie
Mae Thompson; secretary; Mrs. L.
F. Mooring; treasurer, Mrs.
Frances Monroe; U. T. 0. chair
man, Mrs. W. B. Taylor; worship
chairman, Mrs. M. Wallace; social
relations chairman, Mrs. Ollie
Bolden; supply chairman, and Mrs.
G. Broughton; educational chair
man.
Many of the present members
of the St. Augustine’s Guild have
been working tirelessly through
the years, and have rendered their
services to the guild and the church
from the initial organizing. The
guild is very interested in the
church and supports each and every
program that is presented. St.
Augustine’s Guild is among the
oldest guilds in the church and
holds a premium position within
its sphere and the sphere of all
guilds.
The women who are members
of this guild have the highest re
spect and admiration of the whole
church. They operate on the prin
cipal that since they are always
needed they are always working
toward better things for everybody
in the church.

MT. MARIAH AME CHURCH

The presiding elder, Rev. C. S.
Stripling held his fiist quarterly
conference on Saturday evening at
Mt. Mariah AME Church at 6
p.m. All reports were read. The
presiding elder brought glad tid
ings from the annual conference
and said that it was a fine quarter’
for the beginning of the confer
ence year.
Sunday School at 10 a.m. was
in charge of Supt. Neomi Dasher.
Presiding Elder Stripling reviewed
the lesson. Mrs. C. S. Stripling
gave remarks.
At 11:30 a.m. the presiding elder
delivered a soul-stirring sermon.
Choir No. 1 rendered music.
Next Sunday is communion day
at Mt. Mariah AME Church. The
public is invited to attend. Rev.
J. A. Aikins is pastor.
Presiding Elder and Mrs. C. S.
Stripling and Mrs. Annie B. Spen
cer were the dinner guests of Mrs.
Girdie Harris on Sunday.

The last Holy Communion of the
year at Campbell AME Church
was observed Sunday, December 1,
1963. The pastor, Rev. T. D.
Graham delivered a most inspir
ing message from the subject,
“Making Preparations.”
The baby contest and fashion
show, sponsored by the senior class
of Michael C. Riley School was
a success on Sunday evening.
Winner of the contest was Rosalyn
Blake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Dolphus Blake of Hilton Head,
S.C. Runners-up were Jon Derick
and Deborah Chisholm.
Mr. Leon Bush, custodian at
Michael C. Riley School and Mr.
Richard Brown left Tuesday for
Fort Jackson, S. C., where they
will be examined for military serv
ice.
