Society Excerpts

Many local music lovers attend
ed the concert at Savannah State
College on last Sunday evening.
All who attended were thrilled!
Under the direction of Dr. Cole
ridge, A. Braithwaite, the College’s
Choral Society, presented George
Frederic Handel’s oration, “The
Messiah.” The singers were as
sisted by alumni members of the
Men's Glee Club, the Women’s
Glee Club, the faculty, and other
singers of our community. Mrs.
Myra Thomas, was director of the
Women’s Glee Club.
Soloists for the beautiful “Mes
siah” included Naeline Buchanan,
soprano; Imogene Hodge, Alto;
Walker Durham, tenor and Earl
Walden, and Joshua Walker, bass.
Piano accompaniments were Mary
Armstrong, Lauryce Preston, and
Angelene Sampson, James Thomp
son Jr. was at the organ.
This fifth annual presentation
was superb. To say that music
has its charms would be putting
it mildly. Meldrims capacity au
dience was charmed, captivated,
and delighted. We now look for
ward to this very cultural affair
each year during the advent sea
son, and we send my most sincere
thanks to the personnel of the
Fine Arts Department at the col
lege for inviting us.
Glad to know that Mr. William
Bush is still improving at his
home on West 39th Street. To him
we are still sending our prayers
and best wishes for a rapid and
complete recovery..
The “Red Carpet,” Savannah’s
newts cocktail lounge is really very
beautiful. We are so grateful for
a swanky place to go and carry
our friends. Our own James Wiley
is manager of the place, so you
know its unique. My my, my,
red wall-to-wall carpeting is a
sight that delights.
So sorry that an error was made
last week in our paper. Frances
Sharpe (Mrs. Gus) is confined at
the Ga. Infirmary. Mrs. Sharpe’s
many friends are all real pleased
now, that she has improved. We
sincerely hope that she will con
tinue to improve, and will soon be
able to leave the hospital.
Sorry to learn that Herman Mor
gan is ill and confined at the Cen
tral of Ga. Hospital. Mr. Mor
gan, one of our local postmen, has
our most sincere best wishes for
a very speedy recovery.
Glad to see Clynetta Marcus out

The Sassy Set
Hello again, and Best Wishes
to you for a most enjoyable holi
day season from the “Sassy Set.”
Our Old Fashioned Thanksgiving
Day Feast held at the Falcon’s
Country Club proved a most re
warding affair.
The group met on Saturday
evening, December 7th at the home
of Rena Law (Mrs. Leonard) on
Gilbert Avenue.
In our efforts to make this
Christmas a merrier one for needy
children, the group held a work
shop dressing dolls before the
meeting.
During the business session we
unanimously consented to rally to
the call of the March of Dimes
Drive. We will share our plans
with you in the next issue of this
paper.
The set completed plans for the
group’s Yuletide entertainment.
Annette Brock (Mrs. Otis) was
presented a gift for her new baby
Donna Lynn.
During game time, prizes were

MISS EVELYN CRUSE
December 6—The place was
Coconut Grove. The occasion was
Sigma’s annual scholarship dance.
The time was intermission and a
near capacity crowd was await
ing the main announcement of the
evening. You could almost hear
a pin drop as a hush fell over the
crowd. A voice cut through the
silent, dimly lit hall, “Second
runner-up, Miss Julia Wright;
first runner-up, Miss Margaret
Burney.” There was a brief pause
—then the voice came again,
“Ladies and gentlemen, I now pre
sent Miss Sigma for 1963-64—
Miss Evelyn Cruse.” The applause
was loud and long, and congra
tulations were plenty.
The voice was that of Mr.
George J. Faison, president of Tau
Beta Sigma Chapter, Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, who had the
honor of crowning Miss Cruse
Sigma’s Queen. Mr. Faison pre
sented cash prizes to the contes
tants. Miss Sigma was presented
a lovely bouquet of white carna
tions, the fraternity’s flower,
which matched her stunningly
beautiful yellow outfit.
Miss Cruse is a home economics
senior at Savannah State College.
She is the daughter of Mrs. Ale
ther Cruse of Pin Point.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity owes
a debt of gratitude to all who
helped to make this contest a suc
cessful one.
