FRIDAY MORNING. FEB. 28. 1868
Mysterioun Affair in Columbia.
The Columbia Phqenix gives the follow
lowing account of a strange and myste
rious train of circumstances, which have
recently come to light in that place:
“ Several weeks ago, a white man, giving
his name as Emory Jtoward, and claiming
to lie a native of Illinois, was arrested by
Chief RackTrti'e, under suspicious circum
stances. lie stated that lie had walked
from Augusta, (la., and in attempting to
cross the Congaree river, in company with
two companions—named C. W. Peck and
James Cass—the boat upset, and his two
friends and the ferryman (a colored man,
named Richard Williams,) were drowned.
Search for the bodies was made, but with
Unsatisfactory results. The wife of the
ferryman corroborated the statement of the
prisoner, that her husband had attempted
to carry three men across the river, but
knew nothing further relative to the mat
ter, except that her husband had not re
turned. A pistol and a package of letters,
addressed to George Looker, were found on
the person of Howard. Through the in
strumentality of a young lawyer, the pris
oner was released, after several days’ con
finement, leaving his pistol (in lieu of green
backs,, of which article he appeared to be
short,) as payment for the services render
ed by the disciple of Blackstone, and im
mediately departed— neglecting to leave
his address. On Sunday morning last,
a fisherman, who had several traps In the
river, discovered a strange object on one of
them, and on a more minute observation It
proved to be the arm and leg of a human
being. Coroner Walker wa3 notified, and
after considerable difficulty, owing to the
high water, and consequent danger of the
undertaking, succeeded in hiring two men
to bring the remains (which proved to be
the missing ferryman, Richard Williams,)
ashore. Dr. Geiger carefully examine ! the
body, but could find no marks of violence.
An inquest was held in the afternoon, and
a verdict of accidental drowning returned
by the jury. The wife of the deceased fer
ryman identified the body. We now come
to the mysterious part oi' the affair. About
fifteen months ugo a letter was received by
an officer of one of the Masonic Lodges in
this city, from an individual in Kansas, who
stated that a" man—of whom a particular
description was given—had informed a son
of the writer that lie had buried a quantity
of gold near Columbia, which he had secur
ed during the destruction of that city—
offering the young man SI,OOO if he would
accompany him and assist in its recovery.
The father’s advice to have nothing to do
with the matter was complied with (so the
letter declared,) and the object of the writer
was to effect the arrest of the robber, and to
force him to disgorge his ill-gotten treasure.
The letter was replied to, and the police
notified of the matter. Nothing further
was heard - of the affair until about two
months ago, when another letter was re
ceived from the Kansas correspondent, as
serting that the ex-soldler had, in company 7
with a companion—who was also described
—the day before departed on their journey
to Columbia, and that as they expected to
stop in Washington and one or two other
cities oh their way, several weeks would
elapse before their‘arrival at the scene of
their depredations. A strict watch was
kept by Chief Radcliffe and his assistants,
and the result, was the arrest on suspicion
of Howard alias Looker. The description
given bv this man of his two companions
tallies with that furnished in the letter men
tioned above. The interesting query arises,
therefore, were the parties put out of the
way by Looker, so as to secure the gold to
himself individually, or was it a dispensa
tion of Providence, preventing the wicked
robbers of the widow and orphan obtain
ing possession of the coveted gold; or
were the voyagers innocent travelers, who
met with an nniooked for accident ? We
are informed that diligent efforts will be
made for the recovery of the missing bodies.
As the affair is still hidden by a thick veil
of uncertainty, it is unfortunate that Look
er was allowed to depart until the mystery
was cleared np ; as he was, perhaps, the
only witness of the unfortunate accident.—
Letters of inquiry have beeu forwarded to
the Kansas correspondent, and farther in
formation relative to the buried treasure
may yet be obtained.”
Murder.—Saturday evening:, about half-past
sis o’clock, Mr. Henry P. Bassett was murder
ed at Beard’s Mills, on Fowl river, eighteen
miles from the city, by James Edgar, or Edzgar.
We have been only enabled to collect the fol
lowing particulars.: It seems that Edgar, a
youug man about twenty-four years of age,
■was engaged in an altercation with the watch
man of the mill, and Mr. Bassett endeavored
to pacify the two men, when Edgar drew a re
volver and shot him through the heart, remark
ing, as be fir ed, “ 1 have been wanting you a
long while.' Edgar immediately fled, and,
though pursued, succeeded in making his es
cape.—Mobile Register, 2 Rh.
£>B|ath of Mrs. Fitzgerald.—We are called
upon to record the death of Mrs. Catharine
Fitzgerald, who died of old age, at her residence,
in Scottsboro, on the 24th iust., aged 93 years
aud one month, having been born on the 29th
of January, 1775, in Burke Cos., Ga., and educa
ted in Augusta. She had the honor and pleas
ure of an introduction to Gen. Washington
when he visited Augusta, in 1791, she then being
a young lady. Her first husband was the Hon.
Henry Osborne, one ol the Superior Court
Judges of his day, and also a prominent actor
in the framing of the State consitntion. She
leaves one son, John H. Osborne, of Macon
Ga. —-Sfilledgeville Recorder.

Hurley’s -Sarsaparilla.
Os all the medicines that have been discovered dur

ten years have elapsed since the discoverer (who spent
a decade in studying experiments, and prefecting If)

of the country, to be the most surprising and effective
remedy for certain diseases of which they have any
knowledge.
All other Compounds or Syrups of this root have
hitherto failed to command the sanction of the Facul
