► Alexander H. Stephens.
From Dr. DeLeon’s last article in the
New York Citizen, we take a portion of his
Statement of the condition of affairs early
in 1862. He found at Richmond the old
Southern politicians in office, and a great
lack of young and active men. These last,
among them Wigfall, Pryor, Bartow and
Maxey Gregg, entered the army, and the
talent which should have given political
tone to the new regime was poured out on
the battle-field. The writer continues:
This was one graud secret of the failure
of the Confederacy. The domineering
character Os Davis’ administration also
soon alienated many members of Congress,
and gradually developed an opposition par
ty. Davis wished to rule in the Napoleonic
manner. There was no sympathy
him and Alexander H. Stephens. Both
were men of indomitable pride and bound
less ambition, though differing in other re
spects. Davis, after the first plunge, weut
heart and soul into the cause of rebellion,
dismissing from his mind all thoughts of
the prudence or propriety of the step. He
neither regarded slavery nor secession aa
evil per sc, or at least, If such, as compen
sated by greater good.
Stephens, on the contrary, had resisted
secession as long as he coul'd, and was no
enthusiast for the institution of slavery.
In fact, his soundness on both points had
been doubted. He accepted secession as an
accomplished fact only as a sense of duty
to his State, but acted so coldly as greatly
to detract, from the merits of his action In
the eyes of a people excited almost to en
thusiasm. Once embarked In the cause,
however, it was not in his strong nature to
adopt half measure, and his speeches and
utterances were among the ablest and
strongest during the struggle, and certain
ly the most so, since the failure of the cause
<U* w4Uk In* uU)Vouw«>blwn in its
downfall than during the hours of its sup
posed triumph.
80 little interest did he seem to take in
the proceedings of Mr. Davis’ administra
tion, while I was in Richmond, that I never
saw him in the company of the President;
never heard of his assisting at Cabinet
meetings, nor did lie preside over the Senate
as ex officio he was entitled so to do, but un
der the plea of 111 health, kept himself much
retired from all public affairs, except those
of his native State, where Gov. Brown
was always a thorn in the side of the Rich
mond government, and this reflected upon
Mr. Stephens, who justly or unjustly was
supposed to inspire the Governor. What
ever Mr. Stephens’ faults may be, however,
and I did not consider him as faultless by
any means, indirection and intrigue are not
among them ; he was a bold and direct, If
a bitter and prejudiced man, and I do not
deem him capable of meanness.
A Voice from Boston.—The following
is an extract from a private letter from a
gentleman of Boston:
Boston, February 18, 1868.
Bon. John Forsyth , Mobile:
Dear Sir: I take the liberty of congratu
lating you on the success of the loyal people
of Alabama in the recent election. I can
but rejoice that the most infamous conspir
acy ever matured has been crushed by the
white citizens of a sister State.
My sympathies are with your down-trod
den and oppressed brothers, and I believe
the wrongs inflicted upon you and yours
would touch any heart except the lnfaraoun
and contemptible cowards like theliypocrite
Wilson and the braying Sumner. But a
brighter day Is dawning, and I trust that
the reaction now going on will never cease
until all white men shall be equal, and when
the men who are now conspiring against
our liberties shall expatiate their crime ou
the scaffold.
I can but say, in conclusion, that I was
a war Democrat (so called) and periled my
life in the service of my country, supposing
at the time that I was fighting for Union
and peace instead of anarchy and negro rule.
Trusting that you will pardon me for the
liberty I have taken in writing to you.
I remain truly yours.
It is not a little gratifying that Judge
Black, one of the first legal meu and purest
patriots in the country, has been engaged
as principal counsel in the McArdle case.
The whole country was shocked and out
raged at the selection of Robert J. Walker
In the Mississippi injunction case last
spring, and its indignation knew no bounds
when his petition was published, making
up an infamous false record of the action of
the State, and the circumstances of her
connection with the late Confederacy.—
Nothing else could have been expected
ftrom one who acted the ignoble part of a
pensioned agent of the enemies of the
Southern people, and their hireling libeller
abroad during tße war.— Clarion.
The Gbxnt-Stantox Bargain.— Many state
ments have been madeand published, and many
stories narrated, as to an agreement between
General Grant and Mr. Stanton, before the for
mer vacated the War Department. It is con
fidently asserted that there was an agreement,
and a Congressional investigation might dc
veiope the fact that Mr. Stanton after his re
moval positively agreed with General Grant
that If he would relinquish his office as Secre
tary of War ad interim, he (Stanton,) on re
gaining his position, would immediately resign.
[Evening Express.
Rumors to this effect have been current from
the moment of Grant’s surrender of the War
Department. While Congress is so anxious lor
Investigating committees, this would surely
seem to be a proper case for an investigation.
