The Oanal Bank Larceny.
ASTOUNDING AUDACITY" OF THE THIEF,
The astonishment of our readers may even
exceed our own at the perusal ol the following
letter, which comes to us shrouded in a myste
ry quite in keeping with the whole affair from
first to last. It is perhaps the boldest sequel
of one of tne boldest felonies ever perpetrated
in this city. We publish the letter as one of
the sensations of the day, the developments of
which are well calculated to make us pause,
and reflect upon the social elements around us.
We regret that neither time nor space admit of
further comment at this moment:
To the Editor of the N. O. Times :
Dear Sir : I wish to address you a few
remarks as to the operaiion at the Canal Bank.
The pretention ot the fancy flycops and peelers
of this city, and the many amusing speculations
as to “ how it was done," induce me to blow
the matter from beginning to end. lam still in
New Orleans, which I look upon as a fine field
and think money can be made easy.
As to this lite, it can be done any day that
money is tnovine. I had my eye on the Canal
Bank and the men iu it. Affron, of the ex
press, is the only man I was afraid of. I had
some luck that morning, for I happened to see
the messenger of the bank get a package of
money envelopes from the express office and
start toward the bank, i followed him as far
as Peterson’s coal office, on Gravier street,
when I struck across to the other side, and was
ahead of him at the bank (crossing at Peterson’s
office is wh< re I got that yellow sand on my
boots your local mentioned,)
The messenger ciune" in at the side door of
the bank and threw down (he package of en
velopes on the desk of the exchange clerk, who
said he was glad he came, as he was “ ready lo
send off thnt lot of $50,000 to Morgan Sons,”
and to be on hand to take it to the express.
Here was a lay out ! Should 1 spot Ibe clerk
or the messenger v Says f, “take both chances,
if the lush is hedged 100 close at the bank, I'll
after the messenger.” Done. 1 slipped out
the Bide door on Gravier street, went into the
entrance of the law office leading np over the
bank ; took off my coat and hat; slowed them
in the water closest at the head of the stairs,
and slipped down again, round (lie corner to
the Camp street side. Here 1 stepped into the
hank again, but the messenger had gone. 1
could see the exchange clerk comparing the
money with something on his desk, which 1
took at once to be the list ol numbers. I stood
a minute at, the paying teller’s counter, where
three or four-clerks were drawing. Here 1 saw
the exchange clerk seal the package. No mes
senger yet. I wasn’t a hit nervous, but I kept
my eye well skinned. I even thought of writ
ing a duplicate envelope, (I always carry them,)
but says I, “what’s the use V” Here is where the
clerk is mistaken about the time he wns away
from his desk. He left the envelope near the edge
of his ledger, and went to three different desks,
examining three different books ; then he took
the list into the cashier’s or president’s
room. Says I, “ mind your eye, now’s
your chance.” Nobody was noticing me.
I walked up to the desk, and while the clerk’s
back was to me, and the President bad Lis head
beut dowu over the list of numbers, both very
close together, I took firm hold of the railing,
put my toes the combing below, and the
package was up my sleeve in a twinkle. I
stooped immediately, as if to fix my shoe. Not
a stir ! Says I, “ It’s mine!” and I stepped out
the side door, started up to the water-closet at
the head of the stairs next door, put on my
coat and hat, slowed the lush in my private
particular, threw the envelope down the hole,
wiped my hoot soles, and went up still further
into Hnnton’s law office. Nobody was iu. I
brushed my clothes carefully, and sat dow-n lo
write an appointment with Mr. Hunton for 1
o’clock, signing it. Abram Gerson, Jefferson,
Texas. Nobody came in yet. I went down to
the street, saw a crowd round ray railing,
reaching over to see how they could do it ;
Limed into, oamp stri ct and saw Izard and Far
rell at the corner of the City Hotel. They
looked very wise. I stood a good bit near the
corner of Camp and Canal, and presently I saw
Farrell riding on (he top iff a hotel stage down
Common street. He is smart, ho is. Fvery
hrtdy was sarin" - , ‘ there goes Farrell,” n* ;i
every cove in ihe conmi v didn'i know I’am-li,
Especially when sitting rn top of i hotel stage,
on purpose to be seen, i walked on u» to the i
bank, and a good man” were locking up a; the :
baiiiting. I looked up, too. It’s a pretty ,
building. I like it’s siyle very much. But |
to make such a to-do over a few bills thrown
right in a cove’s way is tunny to n r.
Truly, your constant reader,
Abram Gerson,
Jefferson, Texas.
Huntou knows that name, though I don't
think he ever saw me.
gpTtiE Circle Squareo.— Mr. Constant Terry,
of Eagle Pass, Texas, announces that be has
6quavcd the circle. He writes to a contempo
rary :
“ In the rule for squaring the circle arithme
tically, I think originated the saying, ‘ It is a
poor rule that won’t work both ways.’ I find
the number seven (7) to be thesmn of the roots
of the rule to square the circle by the square.
And I yet expect to learn that it originated the
mysterious seven of the Bible. In squaring the
circle geometrically, I find this problem, 37,620,
in which soieuce says is bid the mysterious
seven and three scoro and ten of the Bible twice
told. I dedicate the pleasure of the solution of
this problem to the ingenious. Therefore, it is
evident I am not the first person who originated
these rules for squaring the circle. I think
they were originated the other 6ide of Noah’s
flood.”
The fact that Mr. Terry incidentally remarks
that the number of seven is “ blended ” with
his “ advent, into the world,” that be knows
“ the state of the dead,” that *' sixteenth verse
of Obndi.h is true,” and so on, may ineiiye
ton.e read-rs to donht the value of hr nvathr
nmtSeal calculations.

Hurley’s Sarsaparilla.
Os all the medicines that have been discovered dur

ten years have elapsed since the discoverer (who spent
a decade in studying experiments, and prelecting it)
first introduced it to the public, and it is already re

of the country, to be the most surprising and effective
remedy for certain diseases of which they have any
knowledge.
All other Compounds or Syrups of this root have
hitherto failed to command the sanction of the Facul

contain noxious ingredients, which neutralize the good
effects of the Sarsaparilla, and oftentimes injure the
health of the patient. It is not so with HURLEY’S
