Subject: The Most Objectiona ble Feature in the Catholic Church. Our. Visitors. —We referred yesterday morning to a party of gentlemen who are visiting our State and have in view the investigation of our resources and advan tage, for the purpose of inducing immi gration to this part of the South. This is the beginning, we trust, of a movement which, If properly conducted aud met in the right spirit, must result in almost incalculable good to out- people. The advantages of Georgia, at this time, arc, we might say, beyond estima tion. There are thousands of her acres which, before the war, readily commanded fifteen, twenty and thirty dollars each, aud which are intrinsically worth as much, or more, to-day, that can be purchased for three, four or live dol lars per acre. Her immense water power, fine mineral advantages, beautiful and attrac tive soil and climate, ail from the mountains to the seaboard, stand, as it went, with out stretched arms inviting immigration and capi tal, and assuring tin* most substantial benefits j,, every imt aico. Wo do not believe there is any State in the South which can otter greater inducements, or promise more solid and last ing advantages to the capitalist or laborer than Georgia. Wc have a government in every re sprel fur better than that, of our sister States, our laws are mild, our people liberal an J gene rous in their views, willing to afford any and all opportunities to good men who desire to conic among us; and, in truth, there are innu merable retsons why a proper immigration to Georgia will result in universal benefits to thoss who are willing to develop our resources. And, as we said before, we trust these gentle man, who have already expressed themselves highly pleased with what they havjc seen of our i city, will give more than a passing notice to the advantages of Augusta. Thera is much unoc cupied laud in this vicinity, which, by proper culture, could be made to “ blossom as the vosw ” and lor which only reasonable—nay, : less thxu reasonable—prices are demanded. We j have a (Inc water power at tin* point, one of j the hast factories in the country, several spies- ' did mills, excellent railroad facilities, a good city govetuitnenf, pleasant people, delightful : climate, and other attractions, to which we 82- j rionsly invite their earnest attention, and ask | them to consider carefully in making any re- j port or completing anv arrangements relating , to our Slate. Bat the way widens as we advance and we are reluctantly compelled to forego a further discussion of the subject until some fu ture time. The names of the gentlemen are as follows: A. f. Steiuman, Lancaster (Pa.) Intelligencer; j 1) street, Arthur Clarke, Maryland; L. G. j Wyatt, Citawln (NT. C,) Springs; D. Deekert, I Hagerstown, Md.; J. M. Cooper, Chambers- ! burg la 'leg Spirit; W. M. Bristol, Lebanon (Pa.) Advertiser; It. P. Waring, Charlotte (N. O.) Timex. We trust their journey through onr State may tie attended with great, success aud satis taction, not only to them, but to our people. JUx Gastello.—Dan, with wonderful luck, seems to have taken at “ the flood ” the “ tide in the affairs of uieu,” and as » consequence is rapidly advancing towards iortuue. And we have reason to believe that while be receives a large remuneration for bis efforts to please the public, he gives them, at all times, “ value re ceived.” His circus is said by our contempo raries ot Savannah, Charleston, and other points where he has been, to be first class iu every respect and entirely free ot the slightest objectionable feature, so that ladies and little children have ct owded his canvas, and on no oc casion has the most fastidious taste beeu of fended. We clip the following highly compli mentary notice of his circus from die Mercury A Floridian , of Jacksonville, Fla., where he re cently exhibited; •> The advent cf Dan Costello's great circus troupe and Abyssinian caravan, which is ex tensively advertised through the papers anil by magnificent posters, to take place on Monday, November SOtli, suggest some thoughts. If euceeas is the mark of genius, Dau Castello is certainly a genius of a high order, rising head aud shoulders .above all competitors—in fact, the show giant of the age. This results from the strictness with which every pledge to the lovers of amusement is faithfully kept. None ever go away disappointed, but cheerfully en dorse the fact that his show was nil and more than what was promised—hence those who have seen go again to see, aud they who have never seen hasten to see. His coming is a sig nal for a general rush. Rich .and poor, old and young, white and black, ail greet him with en thusiasm. His great show eclipses all former exhibitions of tne kind, promises a rare treat to amusement seekers (and who is not one?) and with the assurance that nothing will be Said or done to which the most refined could object, we arc sure that the mammoth pavilion Will be crowded with a delighted audience on the occasion of their exhibition ou Monday night.” Grat A Turley have some very pleasant reading this morning for our ladies, as well as every body else. They keep tip with the fashions, and always have something u,ew and beautiful. Bacon. —Whelcss A Cos. have just received eome splendid country cured bacon, clear sides, shoulders and hams, which can be bought fbeap. Give them a call. Council Meeting.—Gup city fathers held a meeting last night at the City Hall, and, after transacting some business of minor import ance, elected Johu A. Christian Chief of Police, in place of ffni. C. Dillon, and L. T. Bloome Clerk of Council, in place of Chas. P. Mc- Calla. We congratulate the citizens of Au gusta upon having once more the services of our former chief. There has never been an officer of the city government who was more acceptable to our citizens or more efficient in the discharge ot his duties. As chief, he won golden opinions not only from our own peo ple, but lrorn every une who has witnessed his coolness and intrepidity under danger, and the perfect command with which he governed his posse. He has labored long and zealously for the accomplishment of a change in our affairs, and we are glad to know that he has been re= stored to the position for which he has such eminent qualifications. To onr friend Blome we offer onr warmest congratulations. He has, too, but received the just reward of merit and ability, aud in returning to his old post, where bis kindness, urbanity and faithfulness won him hosts ot friends, will no doubt add to their friendship and number. The Council has done well i» restoring these- two able officers. The Humors of Reconstruction.—A de lighted audience greeted Mr. Cowardin last night on his second appearance with the “ Humors of Reconstruction,” and with al most constant convulsions ot laughter aud re peated applause, testified their appreciation of the subject, aud their admiration for tha “mas ter hand ” that held it. Wc have never seen a better delineator of negro characteristics, and a more thorough mimic in manner, tone and gesture. His portrayal of the entire scene is so life-like and droll as to excite astonishment as well as excessive mirth. He recently de livered his lecture in New York to large andi cnees, and is highly spoken of by the press of that city. We commend him to our brethren wherever he may go, and advise all who desire to hear something rare and rich to go aud hear him. Fertilizers. —B. 8. Rhctt A Son, of Charles ton, South Carolina, as will be 6een by our ad vertising columns, are the agents for several varieties of fertilizers, comprising Rhodes’ super-phosphate, which is said to be the long est standard manure, the Orchilla and Peruvian Guano. Rhodes’ phosphate, it is said, is pre pared under the direction of one of the most skillful chemists in the United Slates, and has been thoroughly tested by large numbers of the best agriculturists iu the South. The other guanos are well known to our people, and those desiring a pure article will do well to forward their orders to the agents. Dissolution. —The firm ol S. D. Linton A Cos. was dissolved upon yesterday, as their notice will show, and a co-parlncvship formed between R. L. Gentry and Geo. K. Moore, for the pur pose of continuing the commission business in all its branches, at the old stand. The members composing the new tirru are well known citi zens of Augusta, thoroughly conversant with the commission business in all its varieties. With the excellent business talent, energy and acquaintance which they possess, we feel as sured of their success. YVe, with much plea sure, commend the new firm to our country friends and the public generally. Sold Out. —it will be seen by the notice iu another column that Mr. J. N. Frccmau, who for many years has been engaged in the je Jvelry business iu this city, has sold his entire stock to Mr. W. J. Freeman, who will conduct the business at the old stand. The purchaser is a young man of excellent character, intimately acquainted with the business, close and earnest in his attention to it, and there is every reason to hope that lie will meet, with much success, tlis commencement is under most favorable auspi ces, and he has our best wishes for future pros perity. Hunting.— Our friend Bowen, now that the hnutiug season has arrived, lias, in anticipation of the sport expected this Winter, ordered a very fine assortment of single and double-bar rel guns, rifles, aud other weapons, and has also an almost inexhaustible supply powder, caps, shot, of all sizes, and fixed ammunition!. Repairing can be (tone there at little cost and with much promptness. Before you make up your “ hunts ” call on Bowen. Boys’ Guns.—Every hoy now-u-dajs most have a gun, and the place to tin ! cue, which will do good service, is at the store of joint A Thos. A. Bones, who have recently opened a floe assortment of gnus aud pistols. There you can obtain gun caps, g.'jn wads, shot pouches, powder flasks, and everything belonging ton complete outfit. They sell their goods at the lowest cash prices, and you can rely upon the representation they make you. Read the ad vertisement. Lost.—A pair of gold spectacles was tost on Wednesday, about 10 o’clock, by a lady of this city, on Broad Street, between Elbert street ami Mnllarky A Bros.’ store. Ayty per sou finding the same will be liberally rewarded by leaving them at the ollice of the Constitu tionalist. To Our Edgefield Subscribers.— We will be glad if our subscribers in Edgefield will promptly notify us when they fail to receive the Constitutionalist so that we may take the proper steps to remedy it. Crowded Out. —ln coustquence of onr crowded columns, we are compelled to leave out the account of the meeting at the City Hall lust night, as well as several other important matters. Card of Thanks. The undersigned, iu behalf of Companies A tud I, 16th Reg’t, D. S. I, hereby tender their sincere, and cordial flanks to the cilizeus oi Augusta for the sumptuous supper teudered them at their quarters at the City Hotel last evening.
