Tire general business of the city lias been very good
during'the past week. The retail trade, especially,
has improved considerably, in consequence ot the near
approach of the Christmas holidays In the Gro
cery and Provision line a lair business has been doing,
though planters and country merchants are not in
clined to purchase largely. We observed many nur
chnsers of lioiiseliold goods, dming tlie week, such as
Crockery, Furniture, Ac.; also ot Clothing, Boots and
Hhoeu. . ~ ... .
Our remarks below will give some idea of the torn*

Baoon—lb in good demaud- The stock of smoked
meals is very light, though a good supply is expected

COTTON— During the week under review our local
receipts have been only moderate, thus affording but a
light offering stock. European markets and New
York have evinced an unexpected steadiness in prices,
in response to which our market has witnessed a quiet
hut general demand at the prices daily current, open
logon Saturday quiet at 22,14, but strengthening du
'^On 11 Monday there was a lively demand, and full
Middlings readily brought 22*, at which price Tues
day's market opened, bflt closed very quiet at 22*, id
response to declines in the larger markets.
On Wednesday early Liverpool accounts indicated a
£ri-U)ccklii Constitutionalist.
stronger market, and our buyers bought freely at an
advance of X on the closing quotations of the previous
day.
Yesterday morning we opened with a good demand,
on the basis of 23 cents, but the tenor of early Liver
pool accounts, rendered the market quiet at 221f, at
which price it closed, and has so far to-day ruled.
Sales of the week are 3,285 bales. Receipts of the
week, 4,214 hales.
