THE NEW AND THE OLD CABINETS AT WIND
SOR — SCENES AND INCIDENTS.
The people of Windsor appeared in the
earlier portion of yesterday to be scarcely.
“aTTve"Tin* tinporiant busTr.eSs that was
about to be transacted in their immediate
neighborhood. The mini tors of the late
Government, who left Paddington by a
special train at. 12:10, on arriving at the
VVind.sou Station shortly before 1, found
onlv a small crowd awaiting them. The
ex-Minislers, as they alighted, were re
ceived without any cheering, and, with the
exception of a slight clapping of hands,
there was absolutely no demonstration
whatever. The absence of Mr. Disraeli,
who neither accompanied nor returned with
his colleagues, was the subject of general
remark throughout the day, and iu his
absence Lord Cairns, Mr. Ward Hunt and
Lord Stanley appeared to be the centres of
attraction. The ex Ministers were accom
panied l>y Mr. Baron Cleasby and Mr. Jus
tice Hayes, upon whom Her Majesty subse
quently conferred the honor of Knighthood.
Carriages were in waiting to convey the
company to the castle, and in a few minutes
the members of the late Ministry were in
the presence of the Queen, to whom they
delivered up the scats of their various
cilices. On their return to the railwaysta
tion at 2:15 a large number of people were
in waiting. Lord Stanley, with a view
probably to avoiding recognition, walked
into the station, and apparently succeeded
in his object until he reached the carriage,
when lie was recognized and cheered.
At the departure ®f the train there was
some attempt at a demonstration, bnt
in the tnidsi of the cheering sounds
of disapproval were certainly to be heard.
As it was known that another special train
with Mr. Gladstone and his colleagues was
immediately expected, those who had as
sembled to speed the parting Ministry re
mained to welcome their successors, anti
scarcely had the one train fairly left the
station'before the other arrived. The new
Ministers were received with loud cheers,
and some difficulty was experienced in pre
serving an open space through which those
in Lite train could make their way to the
carriages awaiting their arrival. The mem-
bers of the Government generally were not
particularised in the applause of the by
stauders, but Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Bright
were, naturally enough, singled out for
special recognition. As the former passed
from the train to the carriage his hands
were grasped and shaken apparcnt'y by all
who were within reach ; and even when he
bad taken his seat some of the more en
thusiastic —including more than one “per
son” rushed forward and welcomed him
with an enthusiasm that would admit of no
denial. After acknowledging the greetings,
which were loud and general, the carriages
drove off to the castle, the cheering being
taken up by those who had not left the
streets. The Premier and his colleagues
remained at the castle lor about a couple of
hours, the crowd awaiting their return, aud
constantly increasing in numbers and lining
the route from the gates of the castle to the
railway station. The first three carriages,
to the disappointment of the crowd, did
not contain Mr. Gladstone, and the cheer
with which each in turn was received
was feeble, the more ardent among the
spectators evidently perceiving that they
bad commenced their checing under a false
impression. The Premier returned in a
closed carriage, and thus avoided the
heartv recognition which the large majori
ty of the spectators were evidently bent
upon according him. At the railway sta
tion however, this seclusion could no long
er be maintained. So eager and enthusi
astic were the crowd that they pressed
upon the carriage, and for some time pre
vented the closing of the doors, availing
themselves of the opportunity thus afforded
a<min to indulge in shaking hands with
hTm a process whieh lie submitted to with
sufficient good humor. But the crowd, oc
cupied as they still were with cheering Mr.
Gladstone, had by this time discovered that,
Mr Bright, whose return they were anx
iously awaiting, was not with his col
leagues Inquiries were made for him on
all sides and it W3S clear that many were
determined by a careful watch to prevent
liis arriving and entering the carriage with
out recognition. Presently there was a
General movement on the platform. The
signal had been given, and at the other end
of the platform Mr. Bright was seen to be
walkin" toward the train, arm and arm
with Lord Granville, who was smilingly
contemplating the enthusiasm of the spec-

tators. In an instant there was a rush,
and so strong and so violent were the
greetings of his admirers that Mr. Bright
and Earl Granville, assisted by the rail
way officials, had to force, indeed, almost
light, their way to the carriage. The cheer
ing was continued until the de{»arturc of
the train, and as the latter stopped fora
few minutes outside the station the crowd
rapidly moved toward it and renewed
demonstrations, Several even elimbing ud

A Terrible Invention.
A REGIMENT OF SOLDIERS, A MILE AND A
HALF DISTANT, TO,BE KILLED IN FOUR

Some months ago a mechanical genius,

little army could be made irresistible against
any number of enemies. He promised to
let us have the benefit of the idea if he found
that it could be made practicable. Since
then he has diligently worked at it every
evening, Sundays not excepted, bringing it
“ out,” as he calls it. During those mouths
his abstracted air, his isolation, the con
stant succession of hopes and fears about
the success of his project, which would be
visible on his face for days together, Jed
m iny of his neighbors to imagine that he
was more or less crazy. He brought bis
long and absorbing labors to a successful
termination about four days ago, and had
the gratification of testing the utility of his
perfected idea, with the most complete evi
dence of its practicability.
The invention cousist- of a range of
guns of 0.76 bore and about forty inches
long, mounted on a carriage of very simple
structure, to be hauled by one horse. The
width of the carri ige between the wheels
is six feet. The gun barrels, twelve hi
number, are ranged apparently parallel to
each other upon this carriage. We say ap
parently, for their line of tire is not strictly
parallel, bnt divergent, so that at three
hundred yards distant the twelve bullets
sweep a line of about thirty feet. They are
ranged at equal distances from each other,
except in the middle, where there is a space
of ten inches, into which is placed a tele
scope of considerable power, and a nice ar
rangement for adjusting the guns in taking
aim. This contrivance enables the opera
tor to send a bullet through the bull’s qye
at sixteen hnndretj yards niDe limes out of
ten. The tubes themselves are rifled, are
double the strength of ordinary rifles, ami
are made strong at the breecli by a band
six inches broad and onc-sixth thick. They
are all loaded at the breech. The breech
pieces are all connected by a rod, which is
attached to a crank, one turn o, which
opens and shuts all the breecli pieces and
loads the pieces, for the breecli pieces, by
this motion, are brought in contact with
twelve tubes, placed immediately over the
breeches, and containing the cartridges, the
same turn extracting the cartridge from its
tube and inserting it with precision in its j
place in the gnn. The guns are m ule ready
tor firing by a simple and rapid a motion
as the turning of a crank' They are fired
by another slight motion, which drives
twelve needles, inserted in the breech for
the purpose, into the fulminate with which
the cartridges are covered. 80 simple,
sure and rapid are these movements that
twenty-seven rounds were fired in sixty
three seconds, yesterday, at t.he place of
trial, out on the Hyde’s Ferry pike. The
cartridges are four inches in .length, and do
not entirely explode until the ball is about
half way out of lliit-barrel, an effect which
is produced by a utde arrangement of the
material of which toKyare composed. Ex
cept the hpHet the-whole cartridge is com

fired off. ihe got) will send a ball three
miles. The aim is always good at 2,000
yards. At a trial yesterday, a line of plank
six inches broad was raised four feet from
the ground and fired at fifteen hundred
yards distant, and out of sixty shots fired
forty-seven went through and six others
left marks upon the edges of the i lank.
The inventor is confident that a regiment
of soldiers a mile and a half distant could
be all killed by one of these Poliyferi (the
name he has given them), in four minutes.
In the handsof an intelligent, steady opera
tor at least ninety per eent. of the balls
fired will take effect. The whole affair,
when in fighting trim, weighs but five
hundred pounds, and is intended to lie
hauled by one horse and worked by two
men, one to drive and the other to operate.
The loading and flriug apparatus is so ar
ranged that it can be detached in a moment,
when the other part of tlie deadly engine
becomes perfectly useless. One of them
can be finished off complete, with horse,
etc., for #I,OOO.
The inventor, a young working mechanic,
feels jubilant at the great success which
attended the first trial of his important
production, which cost him so many months
of toil and all the means which lie had at
his command, lie goes to Washington in
about a week to push his fortune and to
revolutionize the art of war.
Thf. Coming War in Europe. —The
most terrible wars of modern times liave
sprung from comparatively trivial causes,
illustrating the divine apothegm, “ Behold
how great a matter a little lire kindleth.”
The collision between Turkey and Greece
may set all Europe in a flame. It is but
too apparent that the Great Powers have
for a year past only been waiting fora good
opportunity to fly at each other’s throats.
The military strength of the belligerents,
therefore, becomes a matter of interest.
Dealing only in round numbers, the forces
of Russia, Prussia, France, Austria and
Italy, including those troops which corre
spond to our militia, stand about ns fol
lows: Russia, 1,400,000; Prussia, 1,230,000 ;
France, 1,350.000; Austria, 1,100,000; Italy,
480,000. We include with Prussia the
Bouth German States that were compelled
to follow her lead after the great victory of
Sadowa.
These arc the five kingdoms that are
most likely, in the event of a general Euro
pean war on account of the Turkish-Gre
cian question, to join in the grand melee.
Russia and Prussia, and perhaps Italy,
would be very likely to act together, though
Italy might try to remain neutral, while
Fraucc and Austria would he apt to take
the other side. Assuming that Italy will
take an attitude of neutrality, while Russia
and Prussia ou the one hand, and France
and Austria on the other, should enter into
the field as allies, their respective forces
would number as follows: Russia and
Prussia, 2,630,000; France and Austria,
2,450,000. It would be a spectacle over
which humauity would shudder, to see
these five millions of human beings, who
ltave not the slightest ground for any per
sonal quarrel, doing their utmost to murder
one another at the bidding of two kings
and two emperors. —New York Sun. ‘
How to Retain a Good Face.— A cor
respondent has some good ideas on the im
portance of mental activity in retaining a
good face. He says : We were speaking of
handsome men the other evening, and I was
wondering how K. had so lost the beauty
for which, five years ago, he was so famous.
“ Oh, it’s because he never did anything,”
said B.; “ he never worked, thought or suf
fered. You must have the mind chiseling
away at the features if yon want handsome
middle-aged men.’’ Since hearing that re
mark, I have been on the watch to see
whether it is generally true, and it is. A
handsome man who does nothing but eat
and drink, grows flabby, and the fine lines
of h‘s features are lost,, bnt the hard thinker
has an admirable sculptor at work, keeping
his fine lines in repair, and constantly
going over his face to improve the .original
design.
