FRIDAY MOftjjiWG. r $ >Stale Items. f -The Eatotrton Press says a little son of , Mrs. Amanda J. Diamond, fell from a tree on‘Saturday fast, receiving injuries which caused his death in a few hours. Next week is the great jiibiiee of Put nam couuty and Eatoutou. The Fair promises to beau occasion of great inte rest and complete success. So mote it be. The Telegraph says that the different cotton warehouses of Macon are now filling up rapidly under the low and con tinued decline in the price of cotton. — Planters who are able to do so, as a gene ral thing, are storing for thirty cents, while the buyers are taking promptly near all thq.t is offered at present market rates. Thus far cotton buyers have been losing money in this and all other markets of the Soutb, and if prices should not very ma terially advance next Spring they will be Well nigli crushed under their heavy losses. The Monroe Advertiser has been furnished by Judge Hiram Phinazee with specimens of his fanning, in the shape of corn and po tatoes. There are thirty-six ears of upland corn in the lot—the finest we ever saw.— These thirty-six ears of corn average one foot in length and eleven inches in circum ference, and several contain twenty-two rows of grain. We presume these are av erage samples of Judge Phinazee’s crop. They can be seen in our office. The pota toes were the finest we have seen this sea son. Judge Phiuazee made five hundred bushels of corn on twelve acres. His best acre produced fifty-three and a half bushels, and the second best forty-six bushels. We call this farming to some advantage. The Atlanta Constitution learns that a valuable chalybeate spring has been dis covered one mile from Stone Mountain. An Irish jaunting car has been intro duced into Atlanta. The passengers sit on seats arranged on the side, the driver in front. The body is placed directly over two wheels, the entire weight resting on the axle. The Columbus Enquirer reports a smash up of a Montgomery and West Point Rail road train within five miles of the city, on Tuesday. The engine, tender, four cotton boxes, express and passenger cars were precipitated from the track. The cotton cars were entirely wrecked, and most of the others seriously smashed up. None of the passengers were injured. Express messenger Stewart had his hand slightly scratched and received some little injury in the side. Mail agent Piper also received a slight hurt in the hand. A boy named Tom was slightly hurt. The gin house of Dr. Kurtz, who resides about fourteen miles west of Dublin, in Laurens county, containing six bales of cotton, was consumed by fire on the morn ing of the 20th Inst., supposed to have been the work ot an incendiary. We are in receipt of The Rome Daily , a handsome sheet published by Mosely Bros., & Shanklin, and edited by J. F. Shanklin. It presents a neat appearance, and we wish it success. It is Democratic in politics. The Rome Courier says donations to the Cherokee Fair are arriving. A ball is spoken of and uring the week. The workmen are busy on the grounds, and all will be in tip-top order by the 3d. J. & 8. Rones & Cos. offer to the Georgia and Alabama Shooting Club for the best pigeon shot from trap, a premium of a fine double barrelled Greiner gun, worth $l5O. Com petition open to the amateur sportsmen of Georgia and Alabama. Not less than five entries, and all the entries to be made with the Secretary of the Georgia and Alabama Agricultural Fair Association,-on or be fore the Ist of November, preceding the Fair. Shooting according to the rules of the Georgia and Alabama Sporting Clu,b. The Monroe Advertiser says the City Council of Forsythe resolved to take SS,OQiO worth of stock, each, in Monroe Female College, and Hilliard Institute. Expense op Collecting the Revenue. *_The reports of the Fifth Auditor for ex penses of collecting internal revenue for 1868 show the total expense of collecting the revenue to be $2,348,860, of which $2,237,424 was paid for compensation of collectors. Double this amount for pick ings and stealings and the reader will, have an idea of what this single department of “ the best Government the world eves saw" C08to ” “My dear,* i ntfuiredA young wife of her husband on his you seen the beautiful set-of walnut' furnl*' ture which the Smiths have bought?" “ Ahem! tier, ray love; but I have seen the bill, and it quite satisfies me.” tTri-lDechli) Constitutionalist.
