The first ques tion asked was: “ How the thing had been kept so quiet?" To this the usual reply was that money was spent freely in Colum bia to lobby the biil through; that Corbin was promised a fee of SIO,OOO, and that bribes had been offered to the corrcspond- ents of the city papers to induce them to keep their mouths shut. Os course the last part of the plan worked badly. Corres pondents did make the bill public in time, and in Charleston and Columbia the press opeued Are upon the would-be monopolists. As early as Thursday it was evident that strenuous efforts would be made to defeat the bill, and when on Saturday, the state ment was made In the News that the bill. would most probably pass, the anti-monop olists set to work at ouce to make their hostility tell. By noon the walls were decorated with anti-monopoly posters. By the side of the flaming announcements of “ Rosedale,” and the fading glories of Pluto’s balloon, were sharply written ap peals to the colored people to rally against “ the phosphate-grabbing monopolists.” The people were invited to assemble in mass meeting at night, and a memorial strongly protesting agaiust the equity aud justice of the bill, iu six substantial reasons, was left for signature at various public places. The call for the meeting was addressed to the colored people, aud here is one of the peculiar features of the whole affair. White and black. Radical and Democrat, alike condemn the Phosphate bill as a job which must be exposed, and, in fighting the bill, there is no distinction of race, color or par ty- The brief notice given of the proposed meeting prevented a large assemblage at the Military Hall on Saturday night, and after an interchange of views it was decided by those present to call a mass meeting on Monday night. About four hundred persons, white and colored, assembled at Military Hall, on Monday night, and united in the adoption of resolutions of protest against the passage of the bill by the Legislature, a copy of which was ordered to be forwarded to the Governor. Middle Georgia Fair. —The Eatonton Press and Messenger says: “We are advised that steps are being taken to unite Green, Morgan, Jasper, Newton, Putnam, Jones, Baldwin, Washington and Hancock coun ties iu a grand Agricultural Fair enter prise, to be called the Middle Georgia Fair Company. Looking to this end, some of our enterprising men in Putnam are now moving in the matter, and before long we expect to learn that a capital stock of $15,000 has been taken and that the work of preparing a splendid Fair Ground near Eatonton, the centre} of this district, has been commenced. In fact, we have no doubt of it ourselves, for we know the men engaged in the enterprise, and know that the word fail is not in their vocabulary. This section of country is really Middle Georgia, an*l a finer farming section is not to be found on this Continent. With the enterprise recently infused among the farm ers, and the real earnest manner in which they are working, we know that an exhibi tion could be gotten up here which would be the equal of any in the State. We earn estly trust that our brethren of the press In the adjoining counties will take np this Subject and let us prepare the minds of our Citizens for taking hold of this as a Middle Georgia enterprise that must help the coun try, and pay its own way and yield a hand some dividend besides to the stockholders.” • ' y .
