We always thought Grantville was a good place, hut now wc know it. The cold was mined out of the neighborhood of Grantville. Fif teen pounds of gold, we suppose, were worth in the neighborhood of $&,500. The Young Men’s Library Association of Atlanta has recently received a donation of one hundred and fifty volumes from Mil waukee, Wisconsin. The Columbus Enquirer , of Tuesday, says: A dispatch was received by Mr. Joseph Kyle, yesterday afternoon, announc ing the death, in New York, at two o’clock of that day, of Mr. John C. Calhoun, for many years a citizeu of that city. Rev. J. B. McGeheehas dissolve,! his con nection with the Amerlcus Courier as As sociate Editor. : The Amerjcus Republican says the resi dence of Rev. Samuel Anthony was entered through a back window, on last Friday night, by some unknown person or persons, and some S7OO or SBOO stolen therefrom. The Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad Company advertise that proposals will be received until the 10th day of January for the erection of the machine shops, car » shops and round house of the Alabama aud Chattanooga Railroad at Trenton, Georgia. They have been forced to give Chattanooga the 'go by because of the excessive prices demanded by the property-Holders of that city for building sites. The Times is be rating “ a few selfish citizens” soundly for their'folly and extortionate demands of $2,500 per acre for land desired by the com pany. The Cartersville Express is pleased to Ptice further arrivals of picks, wheelbar itys, spades, shovels and all other imple ments used in building railroads, for the Cartersville and Van Wert Riilroad, and learns that earth will soou be broken on this new enterprise. Ten dollars per month have been added to the pay of Columbus policemen. A little boy, ten years old, son of Mr. Thos. Tallanian, deceased, of Columbus, lbst his right arm by' the accidental dis charge of a gun in his own hands, on Tues day- The Columbus Sun says an attempt is pow being made by influential parties to divert the Savannah and Memphis Railroad to Eufaula, and thence to be continued and connect with the road which will soon be completed to Chattahoochee. The propos ed scheme, it is said, has been favorably re ceived by the officers. The steamer Pioneer, which left Liver pool for Savannah, has on board $35,000 worth of machinery for the Eagle and Phoenix and $15,000 for the Muscogee Man ufacturing Companies of Colftrabus. These amounts are the gold valuations. The storm of Wednesday morning was vefy violent near Forsyth. A Mr. Turner had the roof of his dwelling blown off and carried some distance from the Mu?e. Eences were blown down and trees up rooted. A brilliant masquerade ball is projected In Macon for Thursday evening, January 5.
