Jefferson Davis Addresses a Sunday School Celebration.— Over four thousand five hundred children and ten thousand adults attended The . Sunday last TuesdayTTffilsCTo^^rA^iFfowns in that section were represented. A letter, describing the demonstration, says: “ The Hon. Jefferson Davis was introduced and spoke about ten minutes in an earnest and thrilling manner. His appearance on the stand was hailed by a tremendous burst of applause. The Hon. Jacob Thompson and the Right Rev. Bishop Quintard were also introduced and made a lew pertinent re marks. It was a great day for Jackson, and I presume there never was a gathering of the kind of like magnitude in West Ten nessee.” >- him | ■ ■ General Longstreet —The LaGrauge Reporter says : When a man once startsdown the decliv ity of ruin he descends with great rapidity to the bottom. General Longstreet ouce held a wirm place in every Southern heart for his great bravery and fighting qualities and devotion to the Confederate cause. In an evil hour he yielded to the temptation of Federal pap and became a Radical, for which he was made an officer of the cus toms at New Orleans. But he has let him self down, down, to a lower depth of politi cal degradation! He has been appointed by the Radical Governor Adjutant General of the Louisiana State Militia. Everybody knows what militia means, and can ap preciate too vividly the downfall and de gradation of General Longstreet. Cost of Monarchical Establishments. The Russian dynasty is the most costly of any in Europe, while France and Turkey are but a little way behind. In Russia, royalty costs $8,500,000 a year; in France, $7,000,000; in Turkey, $6,600,000. Other European nations allow their sovereigns smaller amounts. Austria heads their list. The house of Hapsburgh receives in the aggregate $4,000,000 a year. Italy comes next, with $3,200,000; then Prussia, with $2,400,000, while England provides about $2,375,000 for her royal family. Among the smaller monarchies, Bavaria is the most costly, and sets apart for her king and family $1,250,000. Portugal pays $666,000; Holland, $500,000; Sweden and Norway, $260,000; Denmark, $240,000; Wurtemburg, $220,000; Rome, $200,000. In the aggregate, the crowned heads of Eu rope cost the people about $40,000,000 a year for private and household expendi tures. A Nick Sort op Wife to Have About the House. —lt is related that a great deal of excitement was occasioned in Chichester, N. H., last week by an attempt on the part of the wife of a respected citizen of that town to strangle him while in bed. She arose in the night and made a noose of twisted cotton cloth, one end of which she tied around the bed-post, and coiling it around his neck, pulled hard upon the other end. He was awakened, however, and succeeded in getting clear. She claims to have been acting in a fit of somnambu lism. Suppressing Crime by Contract.— England is grefctly exercised over Greek brigandage, and justly so. She offers even to extirpate the bandits for a certain con sideration. But are there not moie burg lars, robbers and thieves in Western Europe and America than there are brigands in Greece and Turkey ? Will any one under take a contract to get rid of them? Death of a Methodist Minister.—We regret to announce the death of a young and promising minister of the Methodist Church—the Rev. E. G. Gage. This gen tleman was engaged in his work' near - Graniteville, S. C., where, we presume, he died. Mr. Gage was stationed there at one time, and his death will be lamented by many friends.— Columbia (8. C.) Phariix. Gin and Milk.— The celebrated bever age invented by the Rev. Mr. Smyth has been “admitted to the bar” of every rum bole in New York, and is known by curi ous names, such as “Smyth’s Recuperator,” “Smyth’s Invigorating Mixture,” “Milk (and Gin) for Babes,” “Smyth’s Milky Way,” “ The Parson% Own,” “ Ambrosia for the Clergy and Laity.” tTii-tUcdili) Constitutionalist. Hav ING discovered a plan by which the farmer and gardener can conquer and ex terminate this great pest by agricultural pro cess, with but little more than the ordinary labor of cultivating laud, I offer to uuy one desiring the iniormation, and who will pledge themselves not to divulge the secret for any consideration to another, to give them the plan on receipt of FIVE DOLLARS—obligating myself in every case to return the money, with interest, if a failure. This plan I discovered by actual operation, and have fonud it to be successful, aud needs only to be presented to the intelligent mind to obtain favor and adoption. 1 do not hesitate to say that a hand by my process can tend at least half the usual quantity of land of very b id DUt grass the first, and all that a hand can do anywhere the next year. From A. W. Mills, a prominent and well known Merchant of Norfolk, Va.: No. 11 Main street, Norfolk, Va., September 15,1869. Dr. Lawrence— Dear Sir: Your Koskoo has worked wonders in my family. My daugh ter has been a sufferer from Scrofula since childhood. She lost thirty-one pieces of bone from her ankle, several from her arm, besides having ulcers in several parts of the body.— Whilst in this condition she commenced taking yonr Koskoo —it acted like a charm on her ; un der its use the ulcers gradually healed, and, her general health greatly improved. It certaiuly saved her much suturing, and perhaps her life. I regard Koskoo a specific lor all scrofulous affections. Your Koskoo also cured my wife of dyspepsia, from which she suffered greatly. She is now in better health than she has been in five years. With the highest regards, I am gratefully yours, &c., A. W. MILLS. Koskoo is endorsed by the best physicians everywhere. Read the following from Dr. Tillery, a successful practitioner of many years standing in the Old North State: Rocky Mount, Edgecomb Go., f September 10, 1869. ) Dr. J. J. Lawrence— Deir Sir: 1 have used your Concentrated Fluid Extract of Koskoo in my practice with the happiest results. I find it to be a powerful Liver lnvigorator, Blood Pu rifier, and Nervous Tonic. In all diseases of the Liver, Scrofulous, Syphilitic and Nervous Affections, it is a remedy of immense value ; in fact, in almost every variety of Chronic Diseases its use is indicated. Hoping you may meet with the success which you deserve as a manufacturer of reliable medicines, I am, sir, with much respect, Yonr obedient servant, R. C. TILLERY, M. D. Koskoo Cures Chronic Rheumatism. Norfolk, Va., September 7, 1869. Dr. J. J. Lawrence— Dear Sir: My son has received so much benefit from your wonderful Koskoo that I caonot refrain from expressing my gratitude. I had tried almost everything without benefit. I believe, in all sincerity, that your Koskoo is an infallible remedy for the disease from which he has suffered, and, so far as I can learn, has never failed. If you only knew the immense amount of suffering that he has undergone, then you could conceive the value of such a remedy as Koskoo— that surely cures. The great amount of good it is now doing among us is inestimable. With much gratitude, I am, respectfully, yours, Ac., Mrs. M. E. A. NELSON. FROM DR. LLOYD, A PHYSICIAN OF LARGE PRACTICE. Great Bridge, Va., October 8,1869. J. J. Lawrence, M. D.—Dear Sir: I cheer fully endorse your Koskoo as being a most valuable preparation. Upon examination of the formula, I find each ingredient highly ex tolled by our best and most progressive clini cal investigators. I have tested its effects in my own practice, and have no hesitation in recommending it. In my opinion, it is the best compound of its class ever put betore the pub lic-exceeding by far all the various compounds ol Sarsaparilla, Ac., ever invented. It is a de cided Nerve Tonic, and Invigorator of the ani mal forces, aiding digestion and assimilation, and thereby producing healthy blood, whicti should be the basis of treatment in all chronic diseases. Hoping yon will reap the reward you deserve from the public as a benefactor, I am, sir, yours truly, CHARLES LLOYD. Alter reading the above high recommenda tion, Invalids cannot reasonably hesitate to give the KOSKOO a trial.
