The Wkathhr.—The beautiful weaiber we are now enjoying, has started our plan ters to work in earnest, preparing ground for the next crop. We would urge upon our planting friends,the importance of plant ing sufficient corn to supply their wants, and enable them to raise another crop. No people can be independent who rely upon other communities for the necessaries of life. As We Predicted. —lt will be remember ed by tiie readers of tlie Republican, that some time during last summer, when we were urging through its columns, the impor tance of building a Hail Road from this place to Uawkinsville, that our contempora ries of the Macon Citizen and Messenger, booted at the idea, and called our city a little village,; that our citizens were scarcely -able to buy the necessaries ot life, much less to build a Railroad. We answered their phillipics, and in the meantime stated that Amerisus was destined to become a place of great importance, that it would some day be the Athens of South-Western Georgia.— We further stated that we would n-ot. be at all surprised, that in le s than twelve months, these Editors would “have to pall up stakes in Macon and move their presses to Amer icas. A part of our prediction is about to be fulfilled by the removal of the Georgia Citizen from Macon to Americas. We told you so Dr. but yon booted at the idea at the time. You thought Macon was a great place then, but you are now convinced that Americas is the place for the Georgia Citi zen. A Good Suggestion-. —We noticed among the Council proceedings,which we published •in our Thursday’s issue, a resolution offered by Aid. Lewis, for the purpose of purchas ing 250 feet of hose, for the use of the city in cases of fire. Long since, a Fire Depart ment has been greatly needed in it bis place. With an engine at hand, when the disastrous fire occurred which destroyed the Cotton Warehouse and one-half the buaiuess portion 'of the place, it might have been subdued in •five Minutes, and -much valuable property saved frotn the 'devouring elements. As it was, the contents from the buildings could •only be removed, and we bad to let the fire •take its own course, and look at the destruc tion of our property. Suppose that a fire should take place in one of the fine blocks, what could we4o to extinguish it? Nothing at all. What would merchants do in the mean time for store rooms? Our business intcr ■ests would inevitably suffer severely, while the process of rebuilding was going on, and but comparatively few ofour citizens would be able to 'rebuild. Country trade would ■seek other markets, and having formed other business acquaintances might never letitin. There are enough young men in this city, to organize a Fire Department, and many have expressed themselves to us, as willing to doso. If a wliife eompanv cannot be form ed, our colored friends are willing and anx ious to organize themselves into one. So important a matter as this should not be allowed to remain unattended to anv longer. By neglecting it, property holders and our citizens in general, will be sleeping over theirown interests, and perhaps, after it is too late, they will be brought to feel the necessity of such an organization. Not a moment should be lost, for we know not at what time the devouring elements may come. The cost of an engine and a sufficcncy of liose will not exceed two thousand dollars, and surely the citizens of A mericus ought to raise that small amount by private contribu tions for so important a matter. Cost wliat it may, an engine must be had, and a Fire Company organized in Ainericus. We hope our citizens will give this matter their early attention, and act on lit, while it is fresh in their memories ; and not allow their interests to suffer any longer, for the want of an engine and a Fire Company.— We would respectfully suggest to the City Council to move in this matter. Let the Mayor call a citizen’s meeting, to take ac tion on the subject, and see what can be done. Our advice is, to pash this matter right along, regardless of any opposition that may present itself, and at the earliest possible moment, supply the city with a good and reliable fire engine. We feel assured that our suggestions will be seconded by nearly every one in the com munity. Again we say let us act immediate ly■ Conxovrr found Guii.ty.— Washington datesof the 11th says: Sanford Connover, detective, who fabricated testimony of the complicity of Jefferson Davis, with the Lin coln assassination plot, has been found guil ty of perjury. Too Good to be Lost. —We have jus been informed of a little affair which occur red in this city on Thursday night last, which amused us no little, and thinking that the risibilities of some of our readers might be operated upon in like manner, we will relate it as it was told to us by one who witnessed tiie scene. On the night mentioned, the | moon was shining most gloriously ; several of our young gents, noted for their musical proclivities, most of whom are tolerable fair performers on different instruments, hired a wagon, called together a few chosen friends, and got ready to start out serenading.— Whilst waiting for the vehicle to start, thqy “counted noses,,’ and found present a splen did quartette, cne guitar, two flutes and two violins. All being ready, oft’ the company started, halting now and then in front of sev eral boasts, startling the inmates by the •‘concord of sweet sounds” and causing the hearts of the fairer portion of the household to palpitate excessively , as each lady tell especially complimented by recognizing, as she thought, the voice of some particular friend among the singeis. More than one beautiful maiden's slumbers were destroyed by the mellifluous tones of the musical par ty. One in particular, thinking she was to be honored,hastily enrobed herselfand alarm ed her parents. The result was a nicely spread table, bountifully loaded with cold chicken, preserves, pickles, &e., Ac., ready to be used when called for. The lumps were properly lighted,and anxiously awaited, with a palpitating heart, the impatient maiden.— The noise made by the wheels of the wagon and suppressed voices could be beard, as the party approached the house. Soon the mu sic began, at first, soft and low, then swel ling loudly and grandly .into ft mighty cho rus. It was more than human patience, (fe male curiosity,) could endure. She must see herself; so slipping up to the window, the sa-ii of which had been previously raised, she placed her dainty fingers upon the blinds —when to her surprise, she found the “stu pids,” (not our words,) had mistaken the house, and the serenaders their sweetness” on a who lived next door. dis dain a’ the neatly set table, ladv. in a fit of pouts, retired to her quiet slumbers. Merited Compl'Mknt,—The liberal ity of pi inters is proverbial, and in many cases exceed their means, and this accounts for the scarcity of rich men among them We are always ready to acknowledge meiit in any one, but must confess that it gives us an unu sual pleasure to praise the typos, for whom we have a fraternal feeling, and we cordially endorse the following from an article in the Columbus fan, alluding to an organization formed by the printers in that office for mu tual assistance, the rules of which require each member to lay aside one dollar each week, for a relief fund to be drawn upon when one of them is sick or otherwise dis abled : ‘‘4Ve have known many classes of people but never one which, in generosity, ready sympathy and true benevolence, surpassed the typos. The State Road.— The Atlanta Era of the 10th says, that during the past six days, seven hundred and fifty-seven loaded cars have arrived at that place, over the Western and Atlantic Railroad, with an aggregate of over six thousand tons of freight, two-fifths or one-half of which was for Atlanta.
