The Capablities of Our Land. A writer in Charleston News has ■ome remarks in reference to our lands, climate and so forth, which should arrest the attention of tboso who are dissatisfi ed, and are leaving for strange and dis eaat parts, where, perhaps, disappoint ment and mortification await them. He says: For raising everything calculated to add to the comfort and prosperty of a people, wo arc satisfied that the States of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia will compare favorably with any part of the world ; and in a point of health and salubrity we have no hesita tion in saying that it ie unequaled, be ing subjected to no extreme of heat or cold. The country on the seaboard, from Georgetown, S. C., to the St. Johns Riv er, Florida, we feel satisfied tha 1, in time will be justly deemed the garden spot ot the Atlantic shore. For many years the writer has been fully convinced that cotton planting has done more to ruin the States of Yirigin u, North and South Carolina, and Geor gia, than any calamity that could, in the ordinary course of events, have befallen th cm. Cotton planting was the cause of many valuable plantations in this State being depopulated ot its negro labors to eupply the voracious cotton plauters of the West. Look at the princely parks, grounds and ruins that arc to bo found in the wilderness from here to Savannah, along the main land ana ask candidly the cause; and the reply will be by some, the country is sickly; by others, the rich cot ton fields of the West could pay a higher price for labor than the proprietors of these estates could, and they had to go. As for the health, we contend that when people have taken the trouble to inform themselves of the requirement of the cli mate, that there is no healthier or better climate in the world than can be found along onr seaboard, and that the people live as long and raise as largo families there, as they do anywhere in the world.
