A Preacher Caught in his Own Trap. Once two ministers of the Gospel were conversing together on extemporaneous preaching; ‘‘Well,” said the old divine, waxing warm, “you are ruining yourself by wri ting your sermons and reading them off. Your congregation cannot be interested in your preaching, and if you are called upon to preach unexpectedly unless you coul 1 get hold of an old sermon you would be cmipletcly confused. The young divine used a’l his elor quance, hut in vain, to convince the old gentleman that the written sermon ex pressed his own thoughts and feelings, and if cal'ed upon he could punch extem poraneously. “As we are of the same faith,' 1 said the young minister, “suppose you try me, next Sabbath morning. On ascending t lie pulpit you can hand me ri text frjm any part of the bible, ami I will convince you that I can preach without having locked at the text bes« re I stand up. — Likewise, I must be allowed the same privilege with you anu see who will make the best of it. The following Sabbath, on mounting the„pulpit, his senior bidher handed him a sl'p of paper on which was written: “And the ass opened his me uth and ous sermon, and charming his c!d friend with his eloquence. In the afternoon the young brother, who was sitting below the pulpit, handed his slip. After rising and opening the bible, the old nan looked sadly around —“Am I not t'uino ass?” Pausing a few minutes, lie ran bis lingers through his hair, straightened his adla* - , blow his nose like the last trumpet, and read aloud, “Am I not thiuc ass?” Another pause, in which a deadly pause reigned. After | reading the third time. “Am'l not thine | ass?’’ lie looked over the pulpit at his | friend, and in a doleful voice, said. “ I j think lam, brother.” Singular Cause for a Due.:. —A correspondent writes from Paris as fol lows : The horses of a carriage took fright a few days ago, but a young man who was passing rushed to them, and not without some dang m to himself, stopped them, hi the carriage was a lady, and .she, call ing the young man to her. thanked him, at the same time stating that she was the Duchess de 1 . She then extended her hand, which the young man took, but she wiihdrcw it directly, leaving a piece of paper in his hand. At the same moment she closed the carriage door and drove off. The paper was a bank note! The young man, who was a gen tleman was covered with confusion at the idea of his devotedness being recompens ed with money. Cut lie immediately went into a case, and finding the address of the Duchess in a fashionable directory, wrapped up her note in ono of a larger amount, and with his card sent both to her. The grande dame was greatly as tonished at the stranger’s presuming to return her note, and (o accompany it with one of his own. She consulted her husband, and it seems that he thought tit to consider the a< t and impertinent one, in consequence it is not unlikely that there will be a duel. Fitcii ox Confiscation. —Our fa cetious friend of the Griffin Star general ly has notions of his own on matters and things ip general, and here are his views ou confiscation: We desire to inform those of our rea ders whoaie fearing this “raw head and bloody bones,” that the Yankees are al together too shrewd a people to confiscate «ur lands as long as wo fol'ow our pres ent system of business ; for they already get everything valuable that wo raise on our farms, and we buy everything we wear from them, and everything wo eat except a little turnip salad—and if the Yankees would send that here for sale, onr people wou'd quit raising it. Confiscation, indeed ! If wo arc not already confiscated, we should like to know the reason why. We are regular brick makers for Yankeedom now, and they do not even furnish us the straw. “Ilurrab for the girls of ‘76 !” “Thunder!” said a New Jersey Wag “that’s too planguey old. No, no—Hur rah for the girls of 17.” Lost! a lawyer’s conscience,somewhere between the Court-house and the Post office ; but as it was nearly worn thread bare, no great reward will be paid for it.
