There was a very large auditory present, on both occasions, and all seemed to bo highly pleased with the exercises. Smith, Our Fallen Heroes. A gold prize was awarded to Master I.ott Warren and Master Lewis Wood, as the best d.cclaimers, and a silver one to Master Milton Hudson, as the best speller. The prises were delivered by G. A. Lofton, Esq., accompanied with a few appropriate remarks. On both Evenings, the exercises wore ren dered very agreeable by sweet sounds of vo cal and instrumental music, furnished by a number of ladies and gentlemen, who kindly volunteered their services for the occasion The part performed by them greatly enltunc. ed the pleasures of the Kvening. In short, the’entire performances were very entertain ing and well received. Our friend Hancock, of the Anieri cirs Republican, is bragging about some cotton from knee to waist high that has recently been shown him, and says “Hurrah for Sutnter.” Ts such as this is anything to brag about, in order to raise onr section in the esti mation of people at the distance, then we are mistaken. “Hog and hominy” in abundance are the tilings to brag and cotton. Let cotton and the Yankees go to the devil—and let tie raise the substanticUs of life, if we de sire the country to prosper. We don’t puff anybody’s cotton, because we look Mpon cotton growers as enemies te tlie country, except where a farmer only plants a very small proportion of the Yankee stutf. You can “hurrah” as much as you please on this score, Lro. Hancock—you, and your like, have already brought ruin and starva tion to our very doors. Thank God, our farmers down this way will make plenty of corn and meat to get fat on —you Sumter folks can make cotton and starve —you’ll have no sympathy from ns, and when you are starving, you needen’t send to us for help, for you won't get it—you and your cotton can go to the devil or the Yankees, we don’t care which.— Early County Views. Don’t get so obstreperous friend Grouby. We will try to avoir! both places you invite ns, by shunning the company of the Editor of the JC<m& in the first place, and keeping away from the freedman’s bureau, in tlie next. We are glad to hear that your people “will make plenty of corn and meat to get fat on” but don’t go and gorge yourself now because you are going to get something to eat. We hope the people of Sumter will not need the sympathy of any, but if they do, we certainly will not send lor help to Early county, where they raise nothing but goober peas and May pops. She turned her face to the wall and wept. The dear lamb had been taught of Jesus, and she poured her heart out to him with a child’s Fit 11 faith.
