And my friend. Bob Styles, held up

feminine apparel.
His Idea was that I should personate
his lady love for one day, to prevent any
body from suspecting the truth—namely
that slio had joined him in a runaway mar
riage party—until it shonld be too late
for interference; that is,-until the minis
ter shonld have tied a knot between them
that nothing but a special grant of the
Legislature could untie.

Nice-looking girl, that Miss Lee.
“Yes,” answered Bob, with a mischiev
ous glanco at me. “She’s a nice girl,
tho’ a little go ahead sometimes. Keep a
littlo look on her will yon,” then lowering
his voice said, “not a bad match for you
old ftliow, she is rich.”
“Is she?” said Bimby, liis interest
deepening.
4 ‘On my honor,” replied Bob. ‘‘Forty
thousand in her own right. Day, day !”
and he was gone.
Maggie Lee, artful creature that she was
had told her father that the nailing party
was to assemble at another hotel, and
thither he had taken her. Having busi
ness to D , he had left her there say
ing that lie wonld send the carriage for
her at eleven o’clock. She like a duti
ful daughter, kissed him and bade him
good-bye, and before ho had gone one
hundred rods got in Bob Styles’s light
wagon which had been driven up to the
back door as Mr. Leo’s drove from tli
front, and the old story of head-strong
love and prejudiced age, was enacted
over once more.
As for us of tho picnic excursion, we
had a delightful sail_ down to the grove
not resist, only when I got through she t
glanced up and said—
” I think yon are real naughty.”
When we returned I found Lawyer
Bimbv noi to recovered from his dizziness,
and all hands ready for supper,, which
was served in the ball-room. I sat
between Bimby and Jennie, and made
love to both in tnrn, to one os Maggie
Lee, and the other as myself
sapper, at which I astonished
many by eating rather more heartily than
young ladies generally do, we had more
dancing, and I hinted pretty strongly to
Mr. Bimby that I should like to take
another waltz.
He didn’t take the hint.
Finding it rather dry amusement to
dance with my own land, I soon almn-
doned the pleasure and persuaded Jen
nie to take a ttroll off into tho moon
light with me. Wo f:>und tho grove a
charming placo, fall ol' picturesque little
corners and rustic seat s, great grey rocks
leaning out over the ri ver. On one side
of these latter a little bench was placed,
in a nook shelter from the wind and from
sight.
Here we sat in full flood of the moon
light, and having just bad dinner, I felt
wonderfully the need of k cigar. Accord
ingly, I went back to a littlo stand near
tho oall-room and purchased several of
tho wondering woman ‘vho sold refresh-
i merits; then returned t< > the seat by the
rock. I gave up all cares ^ c»r fears for
my incognito, and ravelled in tho pleas
ures of solitude—tho fragrance of ray
cigar—tho moonlight—and littlo Jennies
presence.
How long wo sat there heaven knows.

After somo ten or twelve minutes the I
wretched ioon gasped out between bis

“A—a—are you not—get—getting very
tired ?”
Oh, uo i” I burst forth cooly as if we
were riding round the room, “oh, no, I
fell as though I could dance all night!”
The look of despair he gave me was ter
rible to sec.
I was bound to see him through how
ever, and we kept at it Bimby stagger
ed and made wild steps in all directions.
His shirt collar wilted, eyes protmsed,
his jaw hung down: and altogether I saw
he could not hold out much longer.
“This is delightful,” said I, “anil you
Mr. Bimby, waltz so easily.”
“ Puff—pnff—ah—puff—yes—oh—puff
—very delightful.” he gasped.
“Don’t yon think it ought to go a little
faster ?” He rolled his eyes heavenward
in agony,
“Ah, puff—I don’t--ah, puff—don’t
know.”
So when we neared tho musicians, I
said: “Faster, if you please, faster,”
and they played a la whirlwind.
Poor Bimby threw his feet ulx>ut like
a fast pacer, and revolved after the man
ner of a teetotum which was nearly run
down. At Last he staggered a step back
ward, and spinning eccentrically away
from me, pitching headlong into the
midst of a bevy of girls in a corner. I
turned nronud, cooly and walked to my
seat, and sent the woman-killer after a
glass of ice-water.
The miserable lawyer recovered his
senses just in time to thank his rival tor
his water.
I got some idea from this of the fan
young ladies have in tormenting us poor
devels of the other sex.
At this juncture, and before Mr. Bimby
had time to apologize for his accident,
little Jennie cume running into the pavil

Mr. Leo’s drovo from tho nod I positively shuddered m she whis-
pern! to me. “On, Maggie! come help

What should I do? I was in agony.—
A cold perspiration broke out upon my
forehead, I wished myself a thousand
miles away, and anuthmatized Bob Styles’

A whole knot of crinoline then sur
rounded me, on the npper deck of the
boat, to thontter exclusion and conse

other gentlemen. I kept very quiet, only
speakiDg in monosylables in a falsetto
voice. But the others—Lord bless yon !
how they gabbled! _ Under a strict prom
ise of secercy, the little boarding school
maiden who had kissed me so affection
ately, revealed nil her love affairs, and
nlso became very nnpleasantly confiden
tial about other matters—innocent
enough in themselves, but not customa

wonld not do to give np then. As soon
as my trick should become known, Bob
Styles’ trick wonld come ont, and news
of that kind travels fast in the country,
and he and his lady love would be tele
graphed and followed, before they could
reach Philadelphia, where the knot was
to be tied.
We soon arrived at the grove, and

first amusement, and lawyer Bimby led
mo ont fora schottlsche. It was hard
at first for me to take the lady's part in
the dance, bnt I noon got accustomed to
it A waltz was proposed, and I resolved
to havo a little amusement at the expen
ses of the unfortanate Mr. Bimby.
I had at first purposely made him jeal

fellows, one oi whom I knew, in my own
sewing? What if in the midst of all the
embarrassments of being closeted with n
beautiful girl of seventeen in a state of
comparative freedom from drapery, my
real sex should be discovered by her?
I felt os if on apoplectivc fit would bo
fortunate occurrence for me just then.—
However, I nerved myself for the task,
and accompanied Jennie to the house
designated. An old lady showed us to
her chamber, and Jennie, heaving a sigh
of relief, let go her dres«. As she did so,

the floor. She was about to proceed bnt
I alarmed her by a sudden and vehe

“Stop!” I cried frantically, and for-

od’s sake!”
She opened her great brown eyes to
their wildest extent
“And why not?”
“Because I am—I am—a—can you

“Why, yes, how frightened you look!—
Why, wlmt is the matter, Maggie? you—
why—oh! oh! oh!”
And she gave three screams.
‘‘Hush, no noise, or I am lostl” I ex

She was all of a tremble.
Poor little thing; but she saw the force
