COTTON’.—We have another good week’s business
to notice, and prices have her n steady, with a good de
mand from buyers. The total sales ot the week sum up
4,190 bales, as follow: On Wednesday 863, Thursday,
1,056 Friday 376, Saturday 217, Monday 914, and yesler-
day 763 bales—the particulars of which are as follows;

noon,of two crop let*, one of 91 hales from the idant.'ition
sis V. 11. Merriwether, and the other of 130 hales from
the plantation of F. Merriwether, both of Oglethorjie
county. This cotton was put up in beautiful order, clean,
well gift lied and bandied, and soid at full $ cent altove
he market price. As rein irked above, we have had a
good, steady business this week. The market opened
with a fair demand on Wednesday and Thursday; on
Friday purchasers in a measure withdrew to await the
steamers advices, which came to hand that evening by
telegraph, but in a shape, unsatisfactory to both buyers
and sellers, and the transactions of Saturday were limit
ed. On Mondaylfie market opened with an animated
demand, (caused by more full ami favorable advices re
ceived from Liverpool, via Charleston, in advance of
the mail) which continued up to its close last evening.
Although we cannot notice any improvement in prices,
n -still we may remark, that our quotations of last week,
I -which were considered by some a little too high, have
been readily obtained this week, and holders show a dis
position to advance their rales. We continue to quote, for

After the receipt of the Caledonia’s advices last
week, which produced a slight temporary depres
sion iu prices, the market soon rallied and fully r«-
i gained all that had been lost, closing very firm at
former quotations, a 6:}c. per lb. for middling
cottons. This movement was followed by an im
i proved demand, there having been disposed of du
, ing the last three days nearly 10, ) bales. The
opening market this week was characterized by
the same good feeling and continued active through
out to the close, and although the inquiry was not
at all times general and many factors were holding
their cottons under higher limits than the current
rates and tkerefor# did not otter them, there has
nevertheless been a sufficient stock on the market
to afford pretty free scope for operations. The
business of Balurtlav (the first of our commercial
week)andthe four follow ing days, was consequent
ly large, contrasted xvith previous transactions, a- |
mounting Jo fully 15/KX) bales, the market in the j
mean time presenting a firm and steady aspect.— j
The sales yesterday were also on the same liberal
sc ale at the close, prices, which for a dav or two
previous had been quite stiff, showed an improve
ment of i a .Jc. per lb. as indicated by the subjoin
ed quotations. We remark that holders are very
I firm, with only a moderate stock offering.
The sales of the week are estimated at 17,5t - 0

perienced boy, Sally Morgan won a heat from him
by- half a neck His feet were in such condition as
to make it necessary- to turn him out for the re
mainder of the .season. He.was trained again last
Fall, for six weeks, and started at Augusta. 4 mile
lame in both fore legs; lost tfTe heat, and
was withdrawn from the turf to bo placed in the
breeding stud.

MOUNT TRIPOLI.
A REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
geologists to. be ,a great rarity in nature anil
known to them by,the name of Tripoli, has lately
