til the first Thursday in September next, and f that the proceedings of this meeting be pub- j lished in the Savannah papers, the Augusta Constitutionalist, and the Charleston Mercury and Courier, and oblige their subscribers. 1,. M. BROWN, Chairman. James A. Mims, Secretary. The longest despatch ever sent from Boston to New York, was that giving the Acadia’s news, on Sunday. It commenced coming through at half-past 4 o’clock, and finished at half past 9 ; the greatest telegraphic feat on record. Copy could not be furnished in the office in Boston rapidly enough to keep the wires actively employed. {From the .\mv Orleans Courier.) Pillmorcism The anxious zeal with which the whig jour nals trumpest forth their assertion that Fill more voted for the first of Mr. Atherton’s re solutions, proves the flimsy and utterly groundless nature of their attempts to vindi cate him from the charge of being deeply tinc tured with the doctrines of the abolitionists. Very true, Fillmore did vote for the first reso lution, and so did Giddings. One hundred and ninety-three of the members of the House, besides Fillmore, voted for it—only six mem bers voted against it. If voting for the first i resolution proves that Fillmore is not an abo litionist, it proves also that Giddings is none, and Giddings boldly avowed, in the face of live House, that he was an abolitionist in the broadest sense of the word. As soon as |he first resolution passed, it ap pears from the journals that, on motion of Mr. Coffin, the House adjourned. The next day the friends of abolition assembled in the House with a better organization and more determin ed opposition to the resolutions. The first resolution is the most general of the whole series ; a mere truism, or abstrac tion, which only an amalgarnationist could think of opposing: Resolved, That this government is a govern ment of limited powers, and that by the Con stitution of the United States, Congress has NO JURISUICTON OVER TH*E INSTITUTION OF SLAVE RY IN' THE SEVERAL STATES OF THE CONFEDERACY. Fillmore, however, and the other abolition ists, wore taken by surprise, or they would not have voted even for this ; for the next dav they opposed all others, which are in fact equally unobjectionable as interpretations of the letter of the Constitution. The fourth, for instance, was divided—one branch of it declares that ‘ Congress, in the I exercise of its acknowledged powers, has no right to discriminate between the institutions 1 of one portion of the States and another, with j a view of abolishing the one and promoting 1 the other.’ One would suppose no man would contradict this proposition, unless he were convinced that one portion of the States pos sessed privileges not possessed by other States, and unless he were anxious to bring on civil war and disruption of the Union. But on the j question of this second branch of the fourth resolution we find Fillmore, Adams, Giddings, , Slade, and twenty other abolitionists voting against its adoption, while one hundred and seventy-four members voted in favor of it. The fifth resolution declares that ‘all at tempts on the part of Congress to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia or the Territories, or to prohibit the removal of slaves from State to State, or to discriminate be- j tween the institutions of one portion of the I Confederacy and another, with the views afore- j said, are in violation of the Constitution, des tructive of the fundamental principles on which the union of these States rests, and be yond the jurisdiction of Congress &c., &e. Would anybody but an abolitionist and ene my of the Southern States, vote against the ■ adoption of such proposition as these ? Is Congress clothed by the Constitution with power to prohibit a planter from carrying his j slaves from one State to another r May he not buy half a dozen slaves in Mississippi and bring them into Louisiana, with or without the consent of Congress r May not a planter remove with Slaves from Louisiana across the Sabine into Texos ? And whence does Con- i gross derive the power to prevent such remov al ? Fill-move, the abolitionist ; Fillmore, the j whig candidate for the Vice Presidency, thinks | Congress‘;has such power —we would like to ! see Fillmore the abolitionist or any of his friends point to the clause or sentence in the Constitution that bestows such power. We will tell Mr. Fillmore and his friends that the attempt to exercise this power would be an act of revolution —an act which the people of the South will never submit to. We should bo glad to hear General Taylor’s i nation of a bill to prohibit him from transport- ! ing the slaves he lately purchased in New Or leans to his plantation in Mississippi. We should be glad toj know whether or not he would veto such a bill, if presented to him, while President oi the United States. Special Notices. DEMOCRATIC MEETING. [JT The Hon. Walter T.
