OBITUARY.
Departed this life, on the 23d instant, in the -~d
year of her age, J ane A. Dunbar, wife of Thos.
S. Dunbar, and eldest daughter of Adam S. New
house, Sen. To comment upon the virtues of the
dec eased, would be superfluous in us. All those that
were most intimate with her knew her best, and
none knew her in fault. As a wife, mother and
daughter, she was inferior to none, and equalled
but by few ; as a sister and friend, we have seen
but few of her stamp ; but as a Christian she ap
peared in all the graces, Faith, hope and Charity,
lu these t.*?*-' beauty of her|mind as well as her heart
was observably for she was possessed of a fine
and no ordinary mind. Mie has left a bright testi
mony behind her, that she has gone to enjoy the
rest of those that are faithful. She has left a hus
band and child, and a large circle of friends to
mourn her loss. For the lasi two years she has
been a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, and her station, which stands vacant, will
he hard to fill. May r all those who witnessed her
exit from this vale of tears imitate her example.
Our loss we know is her eternal gain ;
No wave of trouble now rolls o'er our breast;
But nature binds us with a golden chain.
To her that loved us, and for her was blessed.

The market closed firm at the time of making
up our last weekly report, and since then there has
been a steady and good demand, which has been

Since our last issue we have full advices from
Liverpool to 7th inst. by the Europa at N. York.—
The quotations for fair Upland and Mobile Cotton
was the same as reported by the previous steamer;
and the Europa’s advices would not probably have
had any effect on our market.
The improvement in prices is caused, we be
lieve, almost entirely by the discouraging pros
t peers which now hang over the new crop. VV e
have advices from all parts of Georgia and South
Carolina, and much of Alabama, and there is hut
one report : “ the frost has injured the Cotton a
. great deal.” The full amount ot the damage is not
ascertained, and some portion ol it might yet be
remedied; but for the excessive drought which ex
- tends over a large part of the Cotton growing re
gion. In many places the seed would not sprout
at all; and the frost has come so late in the year,
. that most planters have destroyed their extra seed;
and there is, therefore, a great scarcity even where
the soil is sufficiently moist to bring it up.
The particulars of the sales of Upland for the

Rice. —There has been very little demand for
Rice this week, and wc only notice the sales of a

paid arc the same as those of the previous week.
Corn. —About 6,000 bushels have been sold du
ring the week at 54 a 56 cents.
Flour. —Most of the flour sold in this market
now is from the Georgia Mills, and retailers are
supplied by the Agents in such a quiet way that
we have but few large sales to report.
Bacon. — We notice the sales of 40 hhds. Should
ers at 5,| a 5£ cents, and 10 do. Sides at Accents.
Domestic Liquors.—- The sales have been light
this week; 25 bbls. N. E. Rum sold at 26 cents.
Salt. —Two cargoes arrived this week from Liv
erpool have been sold at Ssc. per sack and one at
a price not made public.
Exchange. —Sterling bills at 5 a 6 per ct. prera.

Freights.— To Liverpool dull at fd. To Havre

shipping in port for the amount of freight offering
just at this time, and consequently freights gene
rally are dull, both foreign and coastwise.
APALACHICOLA. APRIL 19.— Cotton.— The
receipts during the past week amount to 3,581
bales, and the exports to 8,443, leaving the stock
on band, including all on shipboard not cleared,
40,087, against 28,012 bales same time last year.
The week preceding the one under review,
closed ■tvith a fair inquiry’ for Cotton, the sales of
Saturday amounting to 550 bales at our quota
tions. The present week opened with a good de
mand. the bnsii ess of Monday resulting in the
sale ot 1030 bales at very full prices. Tues
day and Wednesday there was less done, the ag
gregate *ales of the two days amounting to 1100
bales. Wednesday evening’s mail, put as in pos
session of telegraphic news of the steamer “Nia
gara's" arrival with two u’eeks later intelligence.
'Phis news caused a suspension of operations in a
measure during Thursday and Friday, the sales of
the two day’s not exeeediiigsoo hales at prices cur
rent before the news. On Saturday an active de
mand sprung up, which continued throughout the
day. the transactions reaching 1800 bales, the mar
ket closing full i higher than our last week's quo
tations. This advance was not all gained, on Sa
turday—the market gradually- hardened the whole
week, most of the sales being above onr last
weeks quotations. The decline in freights has
probably, had some influence in stiffening the price
of cotton. The total sales of the week amount
to 4400 bales, taken principally for foreign mar
kets. Our quotations correspond as near as possi
ble to the closing rates of Saturday.
