*• I have the honor to report that the Steamship
OSPREY, now running between Philadelphia and
Charleston, is a side paddle-wheel Steamship, built |
in the m’st substantial and durable manner, of
| white oak, copper-fastenmi and coopered above
the load line: that she is model, and pos
; sesses extraordinary sea qualities, (of this 1 am
able to speak from personal observation, having
been on board of her when she was exposed to one
*bf the severest gales that has visited our coast for
many years, which gale she rode out with ease,
without shipping a sea. or straining in any way,
either hull or engine.) She has been built and j
launched but eighteen mouths, and is of unusual !
speed.
“The engines are of the pattern of Todd and i
McGregor, exclusively used between England and j
Germany, and are ol unusual strength compared to !
the size of the ship. They are substantially sup- I
ported upon heavy kelsons, and capable ot driving
the ship in all weathers. This renders her peed- 1
