Burns Pavdoa. The Chronicle * Sentinel is not a whit more scrupulous than the Dalton Eagle, or its scur rilous correspondent “Ikk.” The correspon dent coins falsehoods, the editor of the Eagle publishes, and the editor of the Chronicle $ Sentinel copies them with perfect indifference ns to their own characters for veracity. It would be a hopeless case, even if exercised at this late day. They are a remarkable trio, and on a par with each other. The statement copied from the Dalton Eagle by the Chronicle , relative to the pardon of 13 urns, is a tissue of falsehoods. The Attor neys aS Burns had nothing whatever to do with the petition for his pardon. The writer of this, one of the Attorneys of Burns, the Attorney alluded to by the correspondent “Ike,” never saw or heard of this petition un til a few weeks ago. lie did not know that Burns had been pardoned until months after the pardon was granted. There was no appli cation made to the Governor for the pardon by any other Attorney of Burns, months before the petition was granted. We did bring personally to the attention of the Governor the claims of Burns to a pardon, < c.unded on his exemplary conduct in the Pen- , .tentiary, of which we were informed by the officers of the establishment. Cut it is an absurdity to suppose that our in- ! tercession was the controlling influence which procured the pardon. Such party hacks as the ; trio may seek to make a party use of the affair. [ But they shall not mingle us up in their false- , hoods without receiving a Hat contradiction. I We have put the editor of the Chronicle $ j Sentinel on a par with “ Ike,” and the editor I of the Dalton Eagle, for veracity, because we consider that any editor who will copy the un- I supported statements of either, and seek to give them currency as the truth, is not very | chary of the reputation of his paper. Ti'XAs Cottoh Chop. —The Matagorda Tri bune says that accounts of the Cotton crop in Cany region are of a very disheartening char- ! acter. The cotton w rm has made its appear- , ance in large numbers, and literally sacked the plantations in the lower and middle vicinities j cl that stream. So rapid has been the de- : etruction on some of the plantations, that in ■ the coarse of some three or four days from the appearance of the worm not a vestige of ver- ; dure has escaped the havoc. A correspondent of the Delta writing from Eagle Lake, Colorado county, Aug. 30, says : “ The Cotton crop on the Colorado and Brazos j rivers presents a flattering appearance at this j <imc: the planters are in high spirits, in the j expectation of a full crop and high prices.— I The ‘ oane’ in the lower Brazos and old Caney . was nevt*r better, and a larger quantity of Su- ! gar will he made than ever before, in Texas.— In a few years we shall rival Louisiana in Su- j gar, Mississippi in Cotton, and the balance of the Union in growing grain and raising stock ! .—all that is wanting is population, to develop j the resources of our fertile lands ; that we shall have in course of time, when Texas will j he emphatically the ‘Star State’ of the Union.” j [communicated.] Mr. Editor : —1 am induced to call the athen- | tion. of my fellow-citizens to a fact, which 1 upon investigation, they will find a continued , nuisan.ee, and when properly understood, will not long be tolerated by them. This reasons plainly why the water we receive is so \ steadied, and disgusting to the sme.’l > besides j this, fellow-citizens, look to the facts- for the last 9or 10 years. It has cost our city very nearly $2,000 per annum, to give to its citi- : xens this stenchy fluid for their use, and this 1 amount an out-go from the treasury of our city, | over and above the Water Receipts. Much more can be said upon this subject. | Let the tax payers visit this sink of filth to which I allude, ’tis but a pleasant walk or .short ride to the spring. Sales of Whisky at I £f>4 cents, in bbls. Drowned.—Frank Wilson, Branch Pilot, was lost yesterday morning from on board the Pilot Boat G. B. Cummings, while outside the Savannah Bar. Tne deceased was called for hia watch, at 4 o'clock, and some time after was missing. It is supposed he fell overboard in a fit and was drowned. About t o'elok yesterday f morning, one of the Boilers, at Winkler’s Sttara Saw Mill, adjoining Messrs. Brooks & 1 upper’s Steamboat Wharf, iu this city, ex ploded. Two negro firemen were dangerous ■ ly injured—one badly scalded, theother much injured by the falling of the brick wall of the i furnaci. The mill was in the occupancy of R. J. Laclison & Co. The machinery attach ed to the boilers was greatly damaged. We have not learned the amount of the loss.— lb. ( Froni the A’. O. Picayune , 19 th inst.) From Mexico. By the arrival here yesterday of the schoon er uome, Capt. Oliver, ten days from Tampico, we have received El Noticioso of that port to the 25th ult., end El Siglo from the city of t Mexico to the 22d uit. The Indians had been ravaging the State of Durango to a fearful extent. Among the places which had suffered from their ferocity, are mentioned Santa Catalina, Santa Lucia, Cacuria, El Chorro, Sauceda and Magdalena. The Siglo of the 22d says that a courier had recently parsed through Tepic on his way from Mazatlau, sent by a merchant of the latter place to the Government. The despatches which he carried related to affairs in Califor nia, but their contents were unknown. Gen. U raga had obtained an important vic | tory over the rebels in the Sierra Gorda, but El Siglo insinuates that it will be as fruitless in its effects, relative to the pacification us that j district, as the battles which have heretofore j been gained over them. j A. regiment of cavalry has been sent from ■ Monterey to Matamoras to reinforce General j Avalos in the latter city. j Don LuisZamudio, chief of the ridiculous ! pronunciamento at Semarcaltepec, had been i arrested in the city of Mexico. He will be ! forthwith tried and punished for his treison. i Ihe road between Vera Cruz and Puente ! Nacional w as completely inundated, rendering i communication exceedingly diificult. In some I ! parts the road was impassable. A Mexican colonel named Don Jose Teran y j lato had undertaken an expedition against I the Apaches. He had formerly commanded ; one, which had destroyed a great many of these barbarians. New s from Tabasco to the 3d of August an ; nounce that the quantity of cocoa collected at that place was immense, and y&t the price of the article had not fallen. The Tampico Noticioso insists that the se- i cret expedition lately organizing in the Uni- | ted States was intended for some of the States i of Mexico, and warns all good Mexicans to be- ! ware of the Buffalo hunters.
