V The Br. steamship Severe, has arrived at
Mobile. She brings one million one hundred
and thirty one thousand dollars in specie.— j
The most of it is destined for England—the !
remainder is for Mobile and this city.
The late Round Island expedition has ex
cited much uneasiness in the city of Mexico.
The Consul at New Orleans sent word that
the expedition would land on the Island of Lo- j
bos, near Tampico. Herrera addressed a re- !
monstrance to the United States Legation at
the Capitol of Mexico, and the government
commenced making extensive preparations to j
defend the cities along the coast. Gen. La
Vega had collected together a body of 800 j
men, and armed a steamer with artillery, to
defend the entrance of the river at Tampico, j
It is expected that the new Tariff Bill will j
become a law.
The town of Antigua, sear Vera Cruz, was
[ completely inundated by heavy rain*. The 1
; inhabitants had barely time to escape with
their lives. Public contributions were taken ,
up at Vera Cruz to relieve tho sufferers. ihe ;
I Cholera was decreasing throughout Mexico.

Steamshit Ohio. —This leviathan steamer
arrived off our Bar between 7 and 8 o’clock
on Sunday evening, from New V •~vrk. About
7 o’clock yesterday morning, tho steamer Eli
wan proceeded to the Bar, and placed the
mails and passengers on board, when the Ohio
immediately got underway lor her destination,
Havana and New Orleans. The Etiwau
brought up two or three passengers from the
Ohio, who speak in terms of high praise of the
accommodations she affords. She has between
2 and 300 persons on board.— CA. Courier,
25th inst.
Ship on Fire at Sea —Capt. Letts, of the
*ehr. Squire & Brother, from New York, ar
rived at this port yesterday, states that on the
22d inst. he saw what remained of the hull of
a large ship on fire and burnt nearly to the
w-ater’s edge—stood in close to her, but could
discover no person on or near her. She had
a full length figure head painted white. She
was too much destroyed to permit him to make
her out. Her bow and stem were very high
out ot water, and the Are was about midships.
About 15 miles to the North and East, picked
up a yawl which he supposed to belong to the
above ship, with oars lashed in her ready for
use, and one side considerably burnt. The
I boat has nothing on or in her to denote what

COTTON —Since our review of Wednesday
last, there has been a good demand for Cotton in
this market, for both old and new. and ail ottered
; has met w ith ready sale and at improving prices.
I which will be seen by our quotations below, which
are £ a t cent higher than those current on Wed
■ nesday last. The lower qualities have improved
the most in value, and at the present time there is
i little or no Cotton in market that can be purchas
:ed under nine cents. The receipts are on the in
! crease, and sales are generally made on arrival.
| So far as reported to us the sales this week reach
1 511 bales, viz : 19 at 8T 72 at 9, bo at 9.j, 214 at
■ 9|, 84 at 9£. Hi at 9|. 85 at 9s. 68 at 9 11-16, 58 at
9J,, 4SI at 10, 4 at 10 l-i 6, 178 at 10$, 104 at 10$.
W e omit our usual laides of Receipts and Stocks
at the different ports, but will remark, that up ro
the latest dates received from shipping ports, the
failing off in the receipts is about 37,600 1-ales
comp ared with las t year. Our market closed last
evening with a good demand at the following quo
tations :

HARDWARE.—The’market is well supplied
with all descriptions of Hardware, and every day
: is adding to the stock. Merchants from the inte
i rior can do is well in Augusta as Charleston or
New Vork, as most of our merchants are large
dealers, and get their goods by direct importation,
j GROCERIES. —Our merchants have all been
| kept busy the past week iu selling and putting up
i Goods for the interior. Several merchants who
j had gone through as far as New Vork, have re
-1 turned and purchased their -applies on as accom
! modating term- and at as low prices as they were
| able to procure them North of this market. The
j heavy business transacted, and the low stage of
| the river, has somewhat lightened the stock ol
»oods on hand, but it is still well assorted, and
I ° ’
with the amount of goods on the river daily arriv
ing (notwithstanding its low state) bids fair to keep
up with the demand, most of our merchants hav
ing ordered much heavier stocks ot goods this
year than last.
CORN.—The stock on hand is light, but suffi
cient to meet the demand, which is confined to
home wants. We have no change to notice in
the price, which is 55 cents per bushel tor loose.
FLOUR. —Wo have no change to notice in
prices. The bulk of our stock still consists of
Canal and Baltimore—the latter selling at 6$ to
7£, and the former at a B—fancy brands retail
ing at 9. Country is selling at s6£ to per bbl.
BACON.—The receipts this week have been
| light, but tho stock ou hand is still heavy and the
article is dull of sale. We have no change to no
tice in prices. W e quote goo f sides 6£, shoulders
j 5 ass. and hams at 8 cents up. Good Haras are
scarce. A good lot of side* was offered yester
j day at 6$ cents, wiihout finding a purchaser.
1 BAGGING. —There is a good demand for Bag
-11 , and Prie.es have an upward tendency.—
Gunny is now worth 2l£ a 22, Kentucky 19 a 20,
and Dundee 18 a 19.
ROPE. —Good supply ou hand. Jute is selling
at 10 a lU£, Kentucky 11 a 1 and Russia at 11£
a 12.
SALT.—No large transactions to report this
week. Retailing from stores at 51 -40 a 1.50 per
sack. Good supply on hand.
MOLASSES.—There is a fair supp’y of Cuba,
which is aeLing at 25 a26 cents. New Orleans is
[ scarce—selling at 30 a 33 cents per gallon.
COFFEE.—Prices have, still an upward tendea-.
i ey, and good Rio is now worth a 9 cents. Fa r
j stock on hand.
SUGARS.— Market well niipplied with all de-
I seriptions. No change to notice in prices,
j DOMESTIC SPIRITS.—Good stock of all de
j scriptions on hand; demand limited.
STOCKS. —There is a good demand for Stocks,
