(i ntoniclc & feutittd. HKDMCSDAT MOH.MXi. FEBRI'ARi' li. The Alhpns and Clayton Railroads For many yearn past the attention of every rightly-thinking man in this section of the State has been directed to the great importance of a railway running from the town of Clayton, the county-site of Rabun county, which is an entering angle into North Carolina and South Carolina, to j Athens in Clark county, connecting at the 1 latter city with a branch of the Georgia Railroad. The mineral and agricultural wealth of this large section of country, j comparatively little known on account of it -inaccessibility ; the salubrity of its cli mate: its large extent of cattle ranges, un surpassed save on the banks of the Brazos; the magnificent water powers; the grand and romantic scenery, all combined to make its early development a most desira ble achievement. Ever since the expul sion of the red man, and the subsequent settlement of the country by the white race, Northeastern Georgia has been cut offtrom all intercourse with the other por tions of the State, and, though her people have made many efforts to give to her the much desired communication with the out side world, their efforts have heretofore been without avail. One by one has she seen the Southern, the Middle, the South western, the Northern aod Northwestern divisions of Georgia developed aod en riched by the different lines of railway traversing them ; but never has the iron horse made his appearance in that delight ful and fertile region of country lying be tween the State Hoad and the Savannah river, bringing in its train of wealth and prosperity. More richly endowed by nature than any other section, without railway or water communications, her people are to-day the poorest in Georgia, aod Nature’s lavish gifts have brought neither affluence or refinement, because there was no means by which it was possible that they might be Used to advantage. Season after season nave the rich valleys ot the Tugaloo, the Socjuee and the great valley of the Ten nc-see produced fifty, seventy-five and even one hundred bushels of oorn to the acre ; have the coves of the Currahee, Tocoa and Tallulah nutuntains yielded in abundance finer fruit than was ever brought from the cider lands of New England; while the grapes which drooped in mellow clusters from the clambering vines were capable of affording wine equal to the vintage of Champagne, the Rhine or the Arno; but of what profit was it all if there was no market attainable for the disposal ot their commo dities closer than Athens or Atlanta, the first from Clarksville sixty, and the latter one hundred miles distant, and when the profits realized on the goods were more than consumed by the time and expense incurred in their transportation to those cities? We are gratified, however, to be able to announce, though it be at this late day, that there now seems a certain prospect tlyit Northeastern Georgia will, at last, receive the assistance which she has so long much needed and deserved, and, tap ped by a Railroad from Athens to Rabun Gap in the Blue Ridge, p)iir her rich treasures—agricultural and mineral—into the lap of Augusta. Some time since, alarmed by the progress ofthe Blue Ridge Road, and the certainty also of the com pletion of the Air Line Railway, the Geqrgia Railroad Company, fearing, and justly so, that between the two, they would lose much of thoir lucrative carrying busi ness, appointed a committee, consisting of Messrs. (Stephen Thom as, David E, Butler and (ireene Moore to examine and report upon tho subject of a road from Athens— the terminus of ono of their branches—to Clayton, in Rabun A meeting of the Directors of this corporation was held, on Tuesday last, at the Company’s office in this city, and the report of the commit tee presented. Tho following is a full synopsis of this document: The Committee premise by declaring that, anxious to learn the condition of the Blue Ridge Railroad, from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Anderson. South Carolina, and its prospect for completion, without which there would be no use for the Clay ton road, they had examined into the mat ter, and through the report of its Presi dent, J. W. Harrison, had collated the following information : Tho entire length of the roud from Knoxville to Anderson was 10b miles, and its estimated cost $7,575,000. This road has already been completed and in operation—one end from Knoxville to Marysville, and the other from Anderson to Walhalla —and there had been expended in its construction, so far, $3,287,000. From the importance of the road to Tennessee and South Carolina, the large amount of money already invested and the good condition of its finances (tho Company only owing $250,000), it was safe to determine that the completion of the enterprise was a certainty. Once finished, the Kentucky and Tennessee Railroad, run ning from Knoxville to Bauielsville, aud a road already in partial operation between the latter place and Coviugton, situated on the Ohio River, opposite Cincinnati, would put Charleston in direct communication with the great cities of the uonhwest.and the eon-traction of tbo pro posed route to Clayton, iuterseeting the Blue Ridge Road tnere would bestow the same advantage on Augusta. The com mittee have also collected all the informa tion possihlo as to the feasibility of the Clayton Road and find that the topography ofthe country is extremely favorable to the execution of the enterprise. By taking the rsdpe which rises within a few miles of Athens, and is as a wall between the waters of Broad River and the Oconee, the route may bo run by Harmouy Grove to Poplar Springs, a distance of 37 miles, without crossing a single stream and with J>ut little grading necessary. At this point tho mountain spurs will be encountered and a detour will have to be made in an easterly direction, and, pass'.ug within a few miles of Clarksville and the Currahee Hills and striking the Tallulah River near the Palis, -fti miles from Poplar Springs, here the first bridge will be erected. Crossing the Tallulah the remainder of the distance to Clayton will be along the little valley of Stieouh Creek aud the Road can enter either Clayton or Rabun Gap, as may be deemed best. The entire length oi'theßoad front Athens to. Clayton will be about 90 miles. This road, if built, will act as a “feeder”to the Georgia road and must add greatly to its prosperity. It will be the shortest route practicable between Cincin nati and Augusta and, connecting at the latter place with the road to St. Louis, will put us in close communication with, and bring us the rich traffic of the great cities ol the Northwest. It will be much shorter than either ot the present routes by Dalton and Atlanta or Nashville and Charleston; for the first is t><o miles from Cincinnati, the second 536 miles, while by way of Athens it would only be 625 miles. It is true, that by the completion of the Blue Kidge road, it would be 20 miles shorter to the laKcr city; but to counterbalance this, it the Port Royal aud Augusta road is built the advantage would be ou our side: and even if it were not, the Athens road, costing less than the other, could convey freight at a cheaper rate of transporta tion besides giving the shipper the choice of two markets— Augusta or Savannah, as he might select. By this road, both Augusta and Savannah would be in possession of almost an <«. , route to Cincinnati and the Northwest, and their prosperity as a ne cessary consequence greatly enhanced. The Committee close by recommending that as soon as work is resumed on the Blue Ridge Railroad, surveys be ordered in order to ascertain the cheapest and best route from Atheus to Rabun Gap. and that the Central Road be invited to ioin the Georgia Road to eo operate in assisting the enterprise. • This is the substance of the report made Kwt the Committee, and we learn that it met with a most favorable reception from the Board of Directors. We feel assured that if* the Stockholders of the Georgia Road, who meet in this city during the coming May, are not blind to their best in terests, themselves and Augusta will soon reap the benefits of the rich trade of the Northwestern section of our State, hitherto untouched. A Good Flask. —The effort of the South to offset reconstruction by industry is bearing fruit. The Baltimore Gazette says: “Tired of being huffed and rebuffed, wearied with their efforts to obtain political i privileges, the sensible and practical por ; non of the Southern community have, like Candide, come at last to the conclu i sion that the only secret of wisdom and | true happiness is to cultivate their own gardens, and it must be confessed that they are doing it very successfully.” Death of Mrs. Seaborn Joses.— The Coiumbrs Sun announces the death of the widow of the late Col. Seaborn Jones, who died at the residence of her son in-law. Gen. Henry L. Benning, on Thursday evening last. Home Evidence. Barnett, Ga., Feb. 5, 1869. and. 0. Mathewson, Esq., Augusta, Ga. : Sir:—l have used the Soluble Pacific Guano to a limited extent on cotton crop for two past years, and take pleasure in certifying to its great value as a fertilizer. I have no hesitancy, after a trial of two | years, in saying that it is equal if not ' superior to Peruvian Guano. At some 1 cost per acre I have used it side by side i with Peruvian, and believe cotton wul stand the Summer drought better, when manured with Soluble Pacific than when manured with Peruvian. I think it de cidedly better than Peruvian Guano for clean lands, that is to say, on lands where cotton and corn were raised the past year, j Peruvian Guano may be best for stubble, : yet of this lam not positively certain. I : have recommended the Soluble Pacific to my : neighbors, some of whom have tried it, ; and. in no case have I heard of any but the I most satisfactory results, fdo not believe too much can be said in commendation of i this fertilizer, when compared with other | candidates for favor among the planting 1 public.
