The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must lie paid for in advance. Thu very few vacant bouses in the city at present 101 l us a good story. It is alright to be a Georgia colonel but the price of unifrms is rather steep. It takes a good one to keep up with llm rapid lire changes on tlu ll. A B. Some of those thousand dollar bill/ should be exhibited at. the St. Louis exposition. The presidential boom of Carter Harrison seems to have struck a snag of some sort. Within a few years the cattleman will wear a smile a yard wide. You can mark this prediction. As long as paint and powder lasts some women have found the foun tain of perpetual youth. Mr. McLaurin's railroad career was churl but we cannot say anything ab out the sweet part of it. The people look to the News for all the important events and lhey got what they are looking for too. This is tiie age of preeeiient break iug and do not lie surprised if Mr. Cleveland again lives In the white house. An exchange thinks it strange that Glynn county has no poor bowse. We have never bad any use for snob mi ■insst it nt ion. \\ lion the editors of the north run out of subjects they grab the race question but as their sayings do no harm let them continue. The weather is getting warmer and from the looks of our colored popula tion we aie constrained to believe that they actually feel Watermelon in the air Mr Bryans la- 1 interview was on the same old line. If tliis gentleman knew how tired the people are of his carefully prepared" interviews ’hi v.oiild at least give them a breath iug spell. The Florida legislature did not re peal the Flagler divorce law. Guess th<- members think that if Mr Flagler can have the benefit of such a law other bust,and- with crazy wives have just as much right to get "loose " It is certainly amusing to road a few of the northern articles about t!, south. Some of the smart winters have never crossed tho Ala-on and Dixon line and they know about as nip b about conditions here ns a men key deer of latin. FOR GOVERNOR AGAIN. The papers over the state are say ing a great deal about Col. J. H. Es till for governor again in 1906. We believe that the colonel made a statement recently to the effect that he would again he a candidate provi ded his health would permit and we see no reason why he could not au nounce Ibis fact with impunity at the present time. Some of the papers seem to think that the announcement Is too soon hut we think this is a matter of which Mr. Estill should he the sole judge. if he thinks that lie helps his chan ces by announcing now we cannot un derstand why ii should he the business of anybody else to interfere, lie is frank in saying that lie really wants to be governor and he shows his good sense by making an early start. A RACE WITH DEATH. A news ilem lulls of how a dying Austraillan left England to mot his j hoy at Saji Francisco. He had real ized that grlin death was stealing up on him. The doctors had told him so. i iis boy, whose was in Austral ia, was notified by cable to meet his failier in San Francisco. The doctors told lhe dying man that he could not survive the voyage to the American shores and the long journey across Ihe continent, hut his soul was. afire with the boundless love of a father, and lie began I lie race with death. At Chicago lie said: “I must get to San Francisco." But the grim des troyer had won. Just before the end ii telegram from his son read: “ 1 heat you here, when will you arrive?” Though pathetic, there is ,-omothing grand in this death, struggle of a fa ther to see his hoy. The world and life were behind him; only his hoy and the hope of seeing him were in front of him and even the approach of (loath could not subdue a father’s love. THE WHITE MAN’S WORK. (loldwin Smith, in Ihe New York Sun tells us Hint the white man in iho south is not a tiller of the soil and the Chattanooga Times virtually en dorses the statement by saying that the whiles of the south may he able to make cotton and rice, hilt they do not like to do il and they probably never will Roth tin e writers take too much for granted. It is true that in the pro duction of both of these commodities negro labor is mostly employed but the rice and cotton sections do not comprise ihe entire agricultural south and most of tho farm work outside llie.-e two things is done by the white people. They like it as well as white men of anywhere like it. JUST WAIT AWHILE. | The News is in receipt on an inter esting letter from a St. Simon sub scriber telling of the delightful and historical connection of this beau tiful island and it is not reasonable to suppose than people who live at a distance would know of the many advantages offered for resorts. They no doubt think that the part of the island along the beach is the most beautiful and are under the impression that there is no other place for a re port or winter and summer homey* and here a great mistake is made. There are at least a dozen sites uit alde for hotel or club purposes and to out St Simon friend we can only say. wait awhile. These things are < oming and sooner than the average I arson thinks for. Tilt Great Storm That Overwhelmed New Etisriau'i la 171". In the spring of 1717 an amount of snow fell in New England that lias not been equaled during the three centu ries of its history. The groat storm began in February and buried the earth to the depth of ten to twenty feet. Cattle were Puried iu it and were found frozen stiff under the drifts, and hundreds of sheep p risked. Wild animals grew so desperate from the cravings of hunger that they be came nightly visitors to ttie farmers’ sheep pens. Bears and tvolves fol lowed the Seer even Into the settlers’ clearings and pounced upon them there, killing them at such u rate that deer reeves were afterward chosen iu every town to protect those valuable animals. Many a out story house was entirely covered with snow, and even the chim neys in some instances could not he seen. Tunnels led from house to house, and snowshocs were in frequent requi sition. Stepping out of the chamber win dow, some people ventured to explore the fields of snow. Olio young man in Newbury, Mass., was paying his ad dresses to a lady who lived three miles away and had not seen her for a week after the storm. This state of things could no longer he endured, and, mount ing his snow-shoes, he went over the hills to enter h-r house as he had left his own - by way of a chamber win dow. As he was the first person the family had seen since the storm, Ins visit was highly appreciated. The sweat shop method is strictly avoided at .Tim Carter’s clothes clean ng establishment.
