The News Publishing Company de (dies it to ho distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid lor In advance. We cannot at lord to devote our space to such ad v ll tlsements and wait on the courts lc the money. One minute is an Jioui; when you are waiting at the telephone. Council nave the people a good sain pie of line streets and then slopped the work. There is only one trouble iu this country. There are not enough offi ces to go around. ■■ ■ t —— The old vets will soon be turning homeward hut the match this time will de on the rFuuuiuini. A smile, even if It is a forced one. generally carries as much sunshine wlih It as the real article. Two of the Tampa papers actually threw bonnets at each other. This is hard to believe blit it is certainly a fuel. Under the new management the Augusta Chronicle is getting young again. Second childhood and watch it grow. When you get to kicking about you; lot in life just stop a minute and think of somebody in worse shape than you are. You can always do that. The president severlev reprimanded a western youth for calling him “Ted dy." Served the boy exactly right. He should not try to encroach on Booker's privileges. Save for that daily shooting affray. Nichols is a nice little place. If the folks there rare to amuse them selves by shooting scraps, we -uppose, it is none of our business. Tile are talking of putting out Sen ator Clark for president, if the office could have been bought Clark would have had it a long time ago. That is the way hi l broke into the senate. Editor Herring, of the Tifton Ga zette has a very bine idea of the next presidential election. He thinks the democrats arc going to be defeated and be would just as soon see Cleve land the victim: as any man he knows. Henry Wattersou Ims discovered tnat Piorpont Morgan favors Clove land for president. Mr. Watterson is always discovering something which is calculated to injure Grover and the people invariably take it with i, grain of salt. The News lias given tile doings of the great Confederate reunion since and even before it was in session, be cause we know the groat interest man ifested in ay tiling they do. it costs menu} ta pay for telegraph lulls and send a representative to (he Crests't city but the News did this and it was one of the few Georgia papers that did. DON’T THREATEN. When you want an item withheld from the columns of a paper don’t go to the offiice with threats. This kind of silliness only makes matters worse and makes the publi cation of the item you want kept out all the more certain to go iu. Come at the newspaper people with a different proposition. Toll them of the harm the publication of an item would do you- BUT DO NOT SAY THERE WILL BE TROUBLE IP THE ITEM IS PRINTED because that cer tainly means that the item is going in and under the bolder i headlines in the office. Tbo News know.- that there are it ems which are belter left out but this is a matter entirely with the management and not with those who are interested In the publication. For lids reason, if no other, the matter should be left in the hand of the news paper man. But never threaten to move the office and whip the inmates. It is a bad plan and insures publication as certain as the sun rises. DEATH OF MABiNI. It is difficult to realize that the open ing of tlie Spanish war is now five years old, and that the beginning of our war of conquest against the Fiili pltios was an event of more than four years ago. We are getting thorough ly accustomed to the new ideas and new relations which at that time seem ed so so strong, and many matters of fact about which most of us had hut hazy notions have become more or less familiar. Among these is the fuel that while there are savage and half civilized tribes in the population of lho Philippine islands, there s a very large element that represents a high standard of civilization and aspiration, and that the Filipino insurrectionary government was largely const it tiled by this element. The ablest member of that government died at Manila last week, ami the United States thus takes part for the first time in a pijr nonienou which, for generations, w have been in the liabit of considering as tielonging to policies of conquest unit sub jugal ion I rum. which t)ic great republic of the New World was free. Mnbini was a statesman and leader of great ability, and of Indomitable will, who, though in broken health, devoted both it is fortune and Iris energy to the Filipino struggle for independence, first against Spain and afterwards the United Slates. He spent tlie last lour years of his either as a prisoner of war, or a prisoner released on parol, or a political exile, deported to the island of Gaum by the United States aul horities. In approaching death in exile star ring him in the lace, he finally con sented to die in hi native land, it takes a good deal of commerce to compensate, in the eyes of old fash ioned Americans, for the habituation to the idea of this kind of thing as a necessary incident of colonial rule. ; i*: REPAIR THE ROADS. The awful condition of the public roads of tilynn county was told of in the local columns of the News yes terday and those who are in a posi tion lotuiow stale that the paper did not toll half. The situation is even worse than our report stated. Here is where that one stitch in time will save the two thirds of a dozen and no lime should be lost. The roads were not in such excel lent shape before but now since the lteavey rains, the situation is really serious. The farmers of this county are just set tine in Rood shape and now let ns not handicap them with roads that t hoy cannot use. Now is the time to repair them. -..■1 - ■. - - GO SLOWLY. Tht' city council should go vor> slowly in Dial silt* for the now school house in Now Town. Wo understand that the people of that section of the city. or quite a large number of them are opposed to the Orange l\uk site, and if that is the rase the mater should he carefully i looked into before final action is had. We do not think it a good policy to use the public parks of the city for building purposes, for they cer tainly were not so intended. ’is i is v v umtiow ’ *inoitfo/ oaqnomjfw apznu jobq ayjL S ‘sssusnotriq sastiEO isaou jsqj raoq ps3s oqj si ziipps puy g ' *q)[B3q tnq Suttpou—it ui t||to*q ojq usaq p3zt[U3js SM pus p3J3)ty out ‘Jboq usap aqi ‘rsoq amd aqi si zit[qog 0S ■B qnjtpiesq ]ou si tasq autos joj ‘iaaq iq3u aq> ja3 jng jjS M ’uopsaSip pre o; ijSnoua }snf —jotjooiu jo Ja ;uar> jad "/i £ X[uq ’diuoj t put: pooj V sdoq pun JJBLU Xapißg Haag jo puoj n|3u agi and 34010 33vi3A3q Oil s \ PETITION FOR CHARTER. Little nine-year-old Rachel, whose I failing it was to get stories somewhat twisted, once heard tlie conundrum of the rat and the thirty ears of corn. It ran thus: There were thirty ears of , corn in a bin and a rat came aiong and Carried awnv three wira every night. How long did it take him to carry away the thirty' cars? The an ewer, of course, was thirty nights, counting the rat’s two oars nud one ear of corn. Rachel thought this a wonderfully good joke and hastened to tell iter old ! er brother, whom she well knew al- j ways appreciated anything along the ; lino of.a good Joke. Rushing up to him : she said: “Oh, Newman. I’ve got tho best conundrum you ever heard. See if you can guess it.” And thus site went on: “There was a bag of potatoes in a 1 bln and a rat came along and carried away throe potatoes every night. How long did it take him to carry away the whole hag?” > THE OGLETHORPE, HUGH PORTER, Mgr. Brunswick’s Only F : irst Class Hotel. Reasonable Rates to Traveling Men. Excellent Cuisine.
