It looks like Jacksonville is to have
a warm municipal election. This is
a warm town and likes warm things,
especially elections.

It is a pity that there is such a raise

TEACH POLITENESS.
The News hope® that the time is
not far distant when the schools of the
state win have politeness in their
course of study because we can see
every day where it is needed.

The News is aware of the fact that
thla is taught in the schools now but

LEE’S FAREWELL ADDRESS.
The farewell address of General
Robert E. Lee is of peculiar interest
right at this time. The address was
delivered when it became evident to
the great commander that he was
overpowered and outnumbered but not
whipped.
The address is as followers:
After four years of arduos service,
marked by unsurpassed courage and
fortitude, the army of northern Vir
ginia lias been compelled to yield to
overwhelming numbers and resuorces.
1 need not tell the survivors of so
many hard fought battles, who have
remained steadfast to the last, that
1 have consented to this result from
no distrust of them, but feeling that
valor and devotion could accomplish,
nothing that, would compensate for
the 10-s that would have attended the
continuation of ilie contest. 1 have
determined to avoid the useless sacri
fice or those whose past services have
I endeared them to their countrymen.
By the terms of the agreement of
ficers and men can return to (heir
homes and remain lliere until ex
changed. You will take with you the
satisfaction that proceeds from the
consciousness of duly iailhluUy per

TO PROTECT THE BIRDS.
What the various woman’s societies
and other organizations have failed to
accomplish in the way of preventing
the line of Birds in tho decoration of
feminine headgear is about to he ef
fected by the milliners themselves.
Ily an argeoment which lias been
made between the Millinery Mer
chants.' Protective Association, of New
York, and the Audubon society, there
Is to he an absolute withdrawal from
the trade and in the trimming of hats
of (house species of birds ol which the
Audubon societies and the American
Ornithologists’ union have tiled so

wilt ho formally announced to toe mil
linery trade tomorrow, the members
of the Millinery association pledge
themselves to “abstain from from the
importation, manufacture or sale of
gulls, terns, grebes, humming birds,
and song birds." These restrictions
are to apply to the Birds irrespective
of the country in which they have
been killed or captured, and in
January next the names of egrets,
American pelicans of any species
are to lie added to the prohibited list.
The Audubon society on its part has
agreed to endeavor to prevent all ille
gal Interferences on the part of the
game wardens with tlie millinery trade
and promises to ust- its influence ag

manufacture or sale of fancy fea

or the plumage of foreign birds other

DEMOCRACY’S PLIGHT.
Rdltor Henry Mclntosh, of the es
teemed Albany Heiald, does not seem
to have a bright view of the outlook
of dcmoeraYy.
In a recent issue of 'his paper lie
says: "Between Clevelandisui and
goldbugism on one side and Bryan
ism and free silveris.ni. on the other,
the democratic parly seems in n fair
way to go to the devil.
“The two factious into -which the
party was divided in IS9O are appar
ently as wide apart as ever and so
long as this state of looting exists in
the democratic party the nomination
for president will certainly bo an em
pty honor." i
The bad part of this is the fact
that it is true it: every sense of (lie
word. We can never hope to win un
til we conic together and unless this
is done before the election we have no
chance whatever io put a president j
in the white house.
It looks very much like the petition
of the residents in the section of New
Town will 'he favorably considered By
council. The News thinks it is a had *
Idea to take the park and we hope
the Board of Education will find some
other place for the school building.
