delegates to the stale convention to

Rev. Thornton, besides being a min
ister of ttie gospel, is also a laboring
man and a leader in the labor unions.
A big celebration is to be held in
Waycross and his address will he
one of the features of the occasion.

Herbert Mitchell, colored, was giv
en a preliminary hearing before Jus
tics Hambright yesterday morning <m
file charge of assult and attempt to
murder. He was remanded to jail
under a bond of SSOO to await trial
in the superior court.
It seems that Mitchell and Charles
Stark, mate of the steamer Attaquin,
became engaged In a difficulty on the
dock of the steamer Thursday morn
ing and during the melee Mitchell
pulled his knife and inflicted several
ugly gashes from which the mate i
suffering considerably.

The vestry of St. Mark’-, Ivpiseopal

meeting last night, (he principal ob
ject of the meeting was to discuss
the matter of extending a call to a
minist; r to succeed Itev. Wyllys Rede
who resigned as rector of the church
several weeks ago.
Since Rev. Rede left the city St
Mark's has Been without a pastor
hut the vest: has tieen busy and has
'been making efforts to secure a pas
te to till the vacancy. At the meet
mg last night it was decided to extend
a call to Rev. Lyudsay Patton, at
present in Jacksonville.
For the 'past few months Rev. Pat
ton lias been in Jacksonville as rec
tor of St. John’s Episcopal church.
The regular rector is abroad on
a vacation and Rev. Patton is filling
liis place.
Previous to that, time he was a mis
i ionary and served five years in
China recently. It is understood that
be is an able minister and will make
the congregation of St. Mark’s a vat
liable rector.
It is stated that the vestry has been
in communication with Rev. Patton
for some time and that he practically
agreed to accept the call if it was ex
tended.
