MALLORY LINER
_ CAUGHT IN GALE
THE COMAL LEFT MOBILE JUST A
SHORT TIME BEFORE THE
HEAVY STORM.
The Clyde line steamer Comal was
caught in the recent story along the
gulf coast and was damaged to some
extent. She put into Key West i .
distress and will probaoly remain hi
that port until the necessary repairs
are made. The following special con
cerning the liner was sent out under
a Kew West date line:
"The Mallory line steamer Comal,
from Galveston to New York, arrive I

a violent storm Tuesday which lasti u

In England the first newspaper was
published In 1662 by Nathaniel Butter.
The name of the sheet Is uncertain. In
1656 the first Dutch paper was printed.
It contained two small folio pages of
news. In the Imperial library at St.
Petersburg are two copies of the first
Russian newspaper, which have the
date 1703. There are also sou ** proofs
of the same paper on which are correc
tions written in the hand of Peter the
Great. This monarch toot, great inter
eat In the paper and personally super
intended its editorial composition.
Tlie first paper established In North
America was the Boston News-Letter,
which first was Issued April 34, 1704.
This paper was printed on a sheet
twelve laches by eight and contained
two columns of news. It survived un
til 1776. It advocated the cause of the
British government at the outbreak of
tho Revolution.
Presence of Mind.
An example of presence of mind was
that of n woman who, being left alone
tn the house one night, heard a noise
In the dlulug room and knew that bur
glars were removing the plate. She
was too far from any other house to
summon assistance. Seizing a large
paper bag which lay on u table, she In
dated It and broke It on the wall of the
stairs with a loud report The thieves,
mistaking It for a pistol, dropped their
plunder and fled. There Is no quality
perhaps which we all covet more than
this ready wit which makes action us
prompt as thought In danger. Self con
trol, which we can cultivate, helps us
to attain It In a degree, but It Is large
ly a gift of nature, like n keen eye or
nimbi* tongue. We who arc bom with
out It may console ourselves with the
fact that emergencies come but once
or twice In life, while every hour calls
for the use of common sense, patience
and self control, all of which we can
have If we will.
A Rot and a Hull.
A certain Irish officer responsible for
dog licenses had a system of discover
ing his victims. He knocked at the
side door of every house, and If a dog
barked he Immediately demanded that
the owner show hla license. Every dog
must have his day, however, and one
day this collector reached the streot
with his lower garments nearly intact.
"Bedad.” he said, eying the victorious
terrier through the sailings, “that's the
sort ef dog 1 ldse to see out o* me

•'Parson” Blodjjott. a former local
preacher residing In Linden, had In
front of his house n watering trough
freely patronized by people riding by.
One evening n man hurriedly drove
up to wuter his horse, and the wheel
of bis wagon struek the trough vio
leutly. The “parson" came out hur
riedly and cried: "Hog rabbited to
hemp seed tobacco! Can't you drive
straight?"
“Go In and shut the door.” replied
the driver, “and next time you want
to swear, parson, do It like other men.”

They have a very fuuuy fashion In
Siam. When an inferior conies into
ths presence of a superior he throws
himself upon the grouud. Then the
superior sends one of his attendants
forward to see whether the prostrate
man has been eating anything or has
iny offensive odor about him, If he
be blameless tu this res|>ect the nt
tenduut raises him from the ground,
but If he be guilty the atteudaut

ANOTHER STORM
OVER CARIBBEAN
APPARENTLY APPROACHING THE
YUCATAN CHANNEL—WARN
ING TO SHIPPING.
Advices from Washington tell of the
approach of the Caribbean atmos
pheric: disturbance, apparently nearing
ihe Yucatan channel, and shippings i‘
advised to exercise caution for th :
next few days.
The lollowing is the full text of the
advisory telegram sent from the (' n
tral weather bureau office last night
by Dr. Garriolt, at present in ebarg ■
ot the work there:
"Advisory: Disturbance over wes>-
ern Caribbean sea apparently moving
toward the Yucatan channel. Danger
ous for shipping on West Cuban roast
for the next few days.”
The great success of the weather
bureau in following the course of the
last two storms that have passed up
from this portion of the world, the one
going up the Atlantic coast, far on:
to sea, and the other striking in at
Pensacola and doing so much dam
age along tne guif coast has futiy
demonstrated the efficiency of this
service anil the weather bureau ad
vices will be generally followed.
The other two storms were followe 1
throughout their course by Dr. Gar
nett and shipping interest will be glad
lo know that he is still in charge at
Inc central station.
