ILL-FMED BEL
IS GDHEAT LUST
SCHOONER BERWIND, AFTER
MANY HARDSHIPS, IS WRECK
ED ON CUBAN COAST.
What Is the last of a bad luck
ship, the history of which is probabl.
known to every English speaking sal'
orinau in the world, lies on the beach
of the Isle of Pines, near Havana, i
total wreck, and her captain, Lout.
11. Davidson, of Birston. with eight
men, arrived in Havana Thursday
to tell Ihe story. The vessel is the
Harry A. Berwlnd. of Philadelphia
aboard which soon after she was
launched three negroes murdered tli
captain and the rest of the crew u '
cause their coffee had not been served
hot.
The Berwind never had a day’-;
in: k from the hour that she slid dow 1
the ways at Mlllbridge, Me., in De
i ember, 1805. She was a beautlfii
boat in lines and finish. -With all sail
set before a light breeze she was a
1 icture in the water. In pointing Int.
t ie wind the Berwind was better tha
any four master that Maine hail turn
ed out in ten years.
But there was a curse across her
bow. in her first trip to Philadeiplm
she ran Into a steamship and was
badly damaged There was always
something wrong with the crew. s
than a year old, the Berwind had more
trouble than any other vessel In th?
way of collisions, and finally, two
months after her christening, there
occurred on board the tragedy for
which one man was hanged.
That was on October 12 of lasi
year: On that date In the dark of
night the schooner Blanche H. King,
Captain j. W. Taylor, with lumb.e
from Brunswick, sighted distress sig
nals in board the Berwind, oft South
port, ly, C. Captain Taylor sent ms
mate and half a dozen men to the
Berwind. They found three negroes,
Robert Sawyer, Henry Scott, and John
Adams. The three men declared that
there had been a fight on board an i
that Captain ltuniill, the engineer of
the hoisting apparatus, the stewai i
and the mate had been killed. The
male of the King left the negroes un
til morning. On the following morn
ing the King's crew took charge of the
Berwind and made prisoners of the
three negroes.
After landing the Berwind In South
port It developed that there had been
mutiny aboard the ship 'because col t
coffee had been served to the three
negroes. The rest of the crew pahi
the penalty of death for the cook;
mistake. For the crime Scott wm
hanged and the other two sailors sent
to prison for long terms.
It was the sloop owned by S. II
Hearty that picked up the Berwind ;
crew The men were taken to Neuva
Clerona and sent by rail to Havana.
The Berwind’s gross tonnage was
!'6. her length 1‘J1.7, her depth 38 &
and her beam 17.4.
