These "Home-coming events are
certainly working over time all over
tbi> country.
The people of the Isle of Pines ob
ject to being dumped Into the sack
alone with Cuba.
Those Cuban generals all wanted
Secretary Taft to give them jobs. The
Secretary was probably used to that
kind of a thing.
CURAN REBELS WANT JOBS.
it Is not surprising Dial the Cutian
generals who were posing as patriots
wtllina to sacrifice their life’s hioon
in the interests of their country, be
sieged Governor Taft for jobs. The
basts of the average revolution in
Cuba and in Central America is tin*
desire to lioltl public Office with tin*
emoluments of the game. All the Die
Cuban rebels and a none! many of the
little ones woro ysniants for some
kind of an office, from president <u
the renubllc to sunerintendent of the
dumping of tin* waste-baskets tn the
nails of congress.
The rebel generals have been trying
to tret Governor Taft to tell them ins'
how the 10b proposition stood before
lie took his departure from the tsiauu
each wanted to know what kind of a
pollti.ul reward lie was going to get
for helping sili up “ rumpus It re
minded one or the attitude of tnsur
■.■.'in republicans In tills country wltn
one eye on a political rough-house in
progress and the other fixed on the
pte counter. Mach of the big rebels
ona some of the little ones picked oir
the particular office and salafy he de
sired, and Governor Taft was no doubt
r..mirpi,.ft of a republican campaign m
is own state or in lowa where there
.•.re two classes of people, one mat
feeds at the pie counter and the other
that t waiting for vacancies.
(iovci nor Taft didn't give the of
fice scskers very much satisfaction
for 'lie immediate future. All .lie
would te l them was that the Cubans<
would ha* ;* to hold a fair and honest
election by the results of which they
must lie w illing to abide, before Uncle
Sam would feel justified in withdraw
ing from the island and leave the
Cubans to try again to run things,
Hut there is no reason why these
rebel patriots should tie discouraged.
When the next election is held they
can all lie candidates and In their can
vasses they can tell how 'much they
endured while they were in the hen
• usiness and undertaking to see that
the rascals were turned out for the
salvation of Cuba. They can "point
with pride" while they are on the
stump just as the office seekers do
in this country, and thoic who do nov
got elected can to back to the rehe.

BUTTS.
In Sunday’s issue of The News
there appeared a card from Repre
sentative Butts with reference to the
recent pasage of the bill through the
legislature, giving the city the power
to transfer the property on which tn
A., B. & A. 13 building its -terminals,
but failing to name the price already
agreed upon by the A., B. & A. peo
ple and the mayor and council of the
city of Brunswick. The News is glad
to have this explanation from Mr
Butts, and while it may remove turn
beyond the pale of criti ism or blanu
lor the condition of affairs, it does
not, in the slightest change the atti
tude of the city council, and it does
not alter the fact that the A. & is.
people have been thrown down in
mis matter and that instead of the
city deeding the piopertv in question
to the A.. B. & A., for the sum ot
$5,000 as was agreed upon and act
ually passed in open council, the com
mittoes of the city council upon the
statement of Mr. Butts, wanted $33,
HO for the same! It also brings out
the fact that Vice-President Ails
.vright, seeing the attitude of both tn<-
n.embers (who announced that n“
would not advocate the reduction oi
the figure in the bill to the sum or
lo.OOO), and the committee from the
hoard of education, and realizing thai
either the bill would be passed leav
lug the stipulation open or else the
whole matter .would go over until the
meeting of the legislature next June,
decided to take the less of two evils
and consented to the lull carrying the
necessary power to the city council *o
deed the property.
The News lias no eesbe to do in
justice to any one in the matter, aim
t 'leerfiilly gave space to the card of
Mr. Butts, but in the meantime, the
public will, of course, understand that
some of the constituted authorities
of the city have not acted in good
taith with the A., B. & A. people.
Asa body of business men. acting
upon a serious matter, the city conn
cil should have consulted the hoard
of education on the subject before
making a solemn contract with the
A.. B. H A. railroad and having made
the contract, it is without doubt the
duty of the city council to see to It
that the terms of its resolution are
carried out.
The coming of the A., B. & A. to
Brunswick means much for this city,
in tact it is the greatest industrial
developer in Brunswick, and Bruns
wick snould in every sense of the
word treat on most liberal and gen
erous terms with these people.
The letter of Mr. Butts, while clear
ing his own skirts, does not in the
least better the position of the eu.v
council in tlie premises.
Count Witte declares that he has
had enough of Russia. So lias ail
self-respecting person 3.
Under the new Inspection law the
government guarantees the label, it
matters not what s in the can.
Those Chicago people ore the
bravest In the world. They actuulh
turn out to a game of laseball in the
snow.
That trolley line situation is getting
to have an odor to it chat reminds
me of a cross between fertilizer and
nsafoetida
What has become of that move on
tlie part of the lo.at Elks to bulla
them a home tn ‘Brunswick? it was
a line oue and ought to be taken up
again.
Judge Symmes may tie right otter

Wick's new trolley line is right now
