THE CONFESSION OF "THE
AUDITOR.'’
yf.Su The News has been vindicated."
For fifteen or sixteen months this
publication has been contending that
the Neff proposition was a fake, cal
culated to mislead the public, fath
ered tay certain local politicians, who
In their anxiety for grait and greed
hod lost sight of any duty they
might It a. vo owed to the public and to
the municipality of Brunswick. The
News Is frank to admit that in mak
ing its deductions touching upon all
of the facts in the Neff scheme It had
included more titan one party. In
fact, a close study of this nefarlou .
and highhanded plan to delude Un
people and pollute the sacred right,
of the taxpayers of Brunswick re
vealed to our mind "the tine Italian
hand" of more than one 'Bsau” and
at least four •'Jacobs."
However, uy.o'n the well founded
proposition that a man must be be
•‘•'UhJLPti bis affidavit we are going
UfT temporarily relieve the four "Ja
cobs” from censure and In this spe
cific matter we will only deal with
the "Esau’' otherwise known very
recently as little gnat russell."’
Those who have read The News
lately who are inclined to be honest
will grant that we have been sincere
in our antagonism of this Neff
scheme; It Is not necessary for us to
say that we had no interests in the
carrying or the failure to carry of
tlw- Neff proposition other than that
of a very modest taxpayer and a
Urun.-wtck enterprise, whose future
depends largely upon the growth,
progress and prosperity of this city,
if Mr. Neff's enterprise had been a
legitimate one, if he had come to
Brunswick in the "good and narrow
path’ it would have received the
light hand ol fellowship from The
. ews
But it did not.
All along we have contended that
something was rotten in Denmark
with this Neff trolley proposition,
and from the good moment that Mr.
Neff handed his bogus bond of $lO.-
bOO.OO to the city council and from
the good moment that v,,* oh rvotl
little gnat russell" jumping about
like a old. Ken v>ho ict ,ed it
in the ueck. we cor. >•; thut
there was a nigger in the woodpile
and now on his own volition the
nigger has come out and shown tns
i.eaii a&ove the woodpile.
We had intended on some nuspi
clous occasion to connect the "Audi
tor,’* city cierh, secretary with the
Neff deal from a monetary point of
view, indeed we expected to show
that this official while sen lug the
people of Brunswick at a salary of
fI,SOO per annum, was also serving
o bunch of hoodie financial fakirs for
promised compensation in the way of
atock * horns company and for
further considerations fa the way of
fwaafead official position fa th
etfent the scheme carried and the
rights of the people became food for
the rapacious appetite ,f this graft
ing city official.
But on his own motion, knowing
that the expose was at hand the
self-confessed grafte r like an animal
driven to bay, takes the stand and
In his own defense pleads guilty.
What a travesty on official position,
what a mockery when the good peo
ple of this community are brought
1 face to face with so h a condition
| as this.
i The News has charged all along
that the city council of Brunswick
I lias been a party to this deal; if it
wishes to escape further charges of
this character it should repudiate in
no uncetain manner this egotist, this
mathematical juggler and political
trickster, who dares to assume the
role of dictator and who in the wild
ness of his own imagination an
nounces in bold fashion that he alone
lias usurp' and the legislative fun tions
of the city council of Brunswick and
is ‘‘solely responsible for that Neff
trolley car franchise.”
The i eople of Brunswick should
well consider the serious lesson ral
lied to them by this voluntary eon
lessiou from their own servant. In
many cities, notably Philadelphia
and St. Louis, city officials convicted
of graft, are being prosecuted; all
over this country there Is a just war
being waged against corruption in
official places. Should not the peo
ple of Brunswick pause and console'
the awin' condition confronting them,
which makes it possible for a subor
dinate official to openly and llagrani
ly announce that, he alone is response
ble for the action of the city council
and to further Insult the intelligence
of the community with the statement
that he was actuated in that conduct
by a monetary consideration and a
promise of personal betterment in
the way of official position in the
future.
The people of Btuiuswlck are the
sole judges of ail of the evidence iv.
tills case and The News tails upon
them In n spirit of jimtice and lair
play to rally to the cause of good
> iltieushlp an 1 rebuke any jiolitical
Oligarchy that < arrles with ii a self
confessed grafter and a man who
would toy with the rights of the
people with one hand and draw with
the other their hard earned money
and place himself In a position where
liis personal self interest would com
pel hint to turn down all other appli
cants for a trolley franchise
COL. GOODYEAR'S CARD.
We sincerely hope that the -people
of this city read very closely the
manly nml straightforward card o
Col. c. J’. Goodyear, which was pub
lished hi these columns yesterday
morning. Col. Goodyear's statement
like the man himself was plain and
to the point, and yet manly avul out
spoken.
The effort of "little gnat russell"
and others of his calibre, to reflect
on the Integrity of Col. Goodyear w ill
fail with the good people of Bruns
wi U who have known Col. Good
year for very near forty years, and
who know that in all of those long
years he has always raised his voice
and loaned his energy and hts brains
to the up milding of this city.
The statement that Col. Goodyear
owns any amount of stock itr the
Mutual Light aud Water Company
is wholly false and without founda
tion. He is In no wise Interested in
that company and no one knows tli|f
better than the self-confessed grafter
who attempted to prove to the eon
trary. Col. (loodyear's card should
also silence the re|xl that lie is not
in sympathy with the plan for the
municipal ownership of public util
ities, for ho tells the people that In
is and that, if elected mayor, ho will
have i’ at the earliest invasible mo
ment.
These expressions from Col. Good
year nloug with his platform of forty
years' standing of "progress and
prosperity" are going to sweep him
and his ticket into office Tuesday
week, and that's just what gives the
officeholders ard grafters (self con
fessed! a very bad case of cold feet.
