TODAY’S ELECTION.
The people of Brunswick will to
iluy pass upon a matter of vital ini
port to themselves and at the same
time will test the well grounded prop
osition of whether or not there is
any gratitude in the human heart.
The poophv Prunnwlck will
either slap in the faee the vilest
eonditions or they will place a pre
mium upon it.
In this campaign which (-lns-s to
day the opposition has resorted to
the gro't'.est misstatements regard
ing the character and Integrity of
Col. C. P. Goodyear, candidate for
mayor of llrunswicU on the People's
ticket. Outside of the fact that Is
hold up hy I In-ip as being in collu
sion with the Mutual Light and
Water Cos., which ijharge Is base
tut id tint rut*. t l/rf\ jhavc ,endi)itvored
to make ItNa/crltno for a man to
have been 011111 north of .Mason and
Dixon's line. *We have in ottr com
iminlty st rongifit individuals who
elm need not to have first seen light
math llto balmy Southern skies;
men high up in the llnancial, social
and commercial life of ottr city. We
have men in Lite city council who
weie not thus favored among the
most representative pien in this city
are those who first caught tint
dawn of da> under the shadow of
Hunker Kill monument, and we ask
the hcople of Hrunswiek whether or
not that fact ought to determine the
tit ness of these citizens fur a great
office at (hi* hands of ottr people.
The circular "Is th cat out of thr
hag" issued by the office holders on
the good Sabbath day, in whMi Col.
Goodyear is charged with being in
dose communion with the light and
water company, is too vile to merit
very much consideration at the
bauds of the people of Hrunswiek.
Col Goodyear bus novifj owned a
dollar of stock in the Mutual Light
and Wttier tXnupany; imp never
even - cell retained as an attorney
of that company and litis told the
people of this city so over ltis own
signature. His past life in Urttus
wtek lias been of such a character
that it ought to rebuke any attempt
on the part of unscrupulous politi
cians to onnect this good man with
any such scheme to defraud and
deceive the eople
Col. Goodyear in pledging the peo
ple of Hrunswiek the ownership of
light and water plant within sixty
days only exercised a right that be
longs tto the council at thin
good moment. That body is thor
oughly aware of tlie fact that it can
take over this property at once, if
it so desires, but it is also anxious
to keep it in politii s as a tool with
which to deceive the innocent peo
ple of the city of Brunswick.
In conclusion with reference to
the subject of gnUitude we ask the
people to wall foni<lr whether at
not they ate going to repudiate Col
Goodyear at the polls today. %Ve
point again to his many years of
useful services, not as an office
hold- drawing salary for ills ser
vice. but as a useful citizen, a pa
tiot, ikdng ytoeman ervi<y- in the
rank and file for this city.
Milton has said that there is noth
lng more beautiful in life than grati
tude. and we assert that somewhere
the people of Brunswick ought to
find a spark of gratitude in their
hearts for Col. Goodyear that burns
brirflit enough and honest enough
to consume in its flame every little
peanut politician ami office nobler in
Brunswick. It ought to rise above
the ordinary and narrow confines of
the game of politics and bestow lion*
or whore honor justly i.elongs.
There is a custom in this country
iof placing garlands on the lornb of
great men who have past away in
stead of building monuments to
them while they live. Is this to lie
the fate of your fellow citf/.en whose
• Very inspiration, Whose every
thought and action puis been for
Bruiiswtok? Let's lay aside do op
tion and for one time In Brunswick’s
history break out of the narrow lim
its of political pioviricjlisin and
place a wreath upon the living head
of Col. Goodyear, and not wait
until after he rests beneath the wil
lows of Styx to honor his memory.
lad's honor him while he is yet
with us.
THE BASIS OF DEMOCRACY.
Every now and then a brief i; ara
graph in one of the dally newspa
pers suggests a broad field for com
inent. In a recent Issuo of the
Houston (Tex.) i’ost. wo find Uii*
paragraph:
“There l no discount on the hon-
Jdy of democratic Virginia's elec
tion laws. Affile only reitubllcan con
gressman elected received less than
150 plurality, and they are going t<>
let him have the seat.’’
That Is pure demo ratlc doctrine.
The majority raids. Democacy is
based upon 11, and, when it is brush
ed aside or disregarded demoerary
and its undelying fpiuclples are dealt
a limrd blow. . j
Why -should ra>t the republican
candidate liave l>,s sent. even if lie
received a majority of only one in
the votes legally east? To rob a
republican, a prohibitionist or a
member of any other political 'party
who is chosen by the majority of
the. legal voters to represent them
in a public capacity would do the
cause of democracy Infinitely more
harm than a republican representa
tion could do. Moreover, it would 1
bo far more harmful in its evil in
fluence upon political standards and
conditions in both parlies than ltav- j
|
ing an opponent of democracy in
public office. While The News
is a democratic newspaper and
an advocate of democratic prin
ciples, this paper is an mi ont
pronilslng advocate of fair elections
and a pronounced enrtny to .1 fraud
ulent electorate or corruption in pub
lic office. It is far better that a
republican be ltt public office than
that our political standards ibe low
ered by ciooked elections. Honest
elections are the foundation of do
etu\v in our public life. •
