THE GILLETTE VERDICT.
Tlit* verdict of guilty <if murder in
tli* first degree returned by tb<> jury
at Herkimer, N. V.. in the raw of
young Chester Gillette for the mur
der of (ira'ce Brown, the girl whom
hr betrayed, will meet with very
general approval. Under the testi
mony submitted certainly' no other
verdict could have been rendered -
The caw has attracted much atten
tion and the trial has been in pro
gress for several weeks. The result
Is what was generally looked for.
. Tlie ■ murder of Miss Brown was
cruel and revolting, and while the
evidence upHn which tWllette was
converted was largely circumstan
tial, there being no eye witnesses
but himself to the crime, it was link
ed together perfectly arid seemed
convincing. According to the pris
oner's own story lie Is a heartless
wretch, for lie acknowledge, first to
Vet ray lug the girl, and then con
fessed that he did not make any ef
fort to save her after she sprang
Irom the boat on Big Moose lake, ar.
he claimed she did. However, an
examination of the body and the tes
tlmony of experts showed conclu
sively (hat the victim did not die
rrom drowning, but was put to death
nefore her laxly was cast Into tin
wafer.
There seems to lie no doubt but
that Gillette swore falsely, hut even
In seeking to concoct what he sup
posed to hi; a plausible, story of
the girl's death he made himself out
n eotd-blooded wretch and practi
cally acknowledged that he wanted
to get Miss Brown out of tin* way.
The verdict is u just one and it
will hardly be set aside. A young
brute of Gillette’s type deserves no
ronstdorut ion.
REAL ESTATE SECURITY.
The hill authorizing national hank ß
to make loans on real estate will
probably prove of some benefit to
land owners, though not of as great
benefit as its advocates hope. Real
estate will always he objectionable
as a socufTty with banks on account
of the delays attendant on the legal
enforcement of claims on it it is
objectionable also from the fact that
it Is not quickly convertible into
cash.
This objection not hold In the
case of real estate In growing cities
to the same extent ns in the case of
farm lands: and. for this reason, we
do not cx|R*ct the passage of the
law to be of great benefit to fanners.
In spite of all the abuse of the spec
ulator lie is the steadier of rallies,
and there is little speculation In
farm lands. If a piece of city prop
erty Is offered for sale, and a pur
chaser is not found who wishes to
use It. one can be found who will
bny it as a speculation. This give*
a r-isbfltfy of value to city real c
***• that farm land* do not hare, and
'it makes Urban property preferable j
las security for loans.
! We cannot see that there was ever j
!any stronger reason against permit
| ting national hanks to accept real
jestate as security. The matter might
have safely been left to the discre
tion of the hankers. No better se
curity for long-time loans can be
ound, and no law was needed to pre
vent' banks from accepting such se
curity for short loans. The passage
of this law may result in the invest
ment of more banking capital in
j long-time loans, and If it should so
| result a smaller amount would b*
| left for -mercantile loans. At the
I same time it must be remembered
| that merchants would have less need
jof accommodation if their custom
! rs could borrow easily and at. mod
erate rates of Interest.
NEW HOUSES NEEDED IN
BRUNSWICK.
There Is a growing demand lit
Brunswick for small houses, cot
tages suitable for the man of mod
erate means. On ail sides one can
hear of people who are practically
homeless and who ate searching all
over the city for houses to live in
j The New* absolutely knows of two
families, who had to give tip in dis
gust because they could not find
houses and fluffing the life at hotels
and boarding houses too expensive
for their incomes, deliberately pulled
up stakes and removed to Jackson
ville. This condition ought not to
exist In Ibis city. It is a pretty
poor sign of the times, when new
romesre find it impossible to rent
houses for their families.
We suggest that this matter d;c
hrouglil to the attention of the com
mercial bodies of the city and that
on effort be made to induce local
capitalists to form a stock com
puny for the "sole purpose id' build
ing for rent and sale nice little cot
tages, that will rent for sums rang
ing from fifteen to twenty-five dol
lars per month, and that will sell on
the market for sums between $1,500
and $2,500, We are persuaded that
such a concern properly bandied
could hand back to Its stockholders
valuable dividends and at the same
time prove to be a great advantage
to tlie city. Just now when she is
growing so rapidly.
Front a close examination of the
situation, we honestly believe that
one hundred new cottages alter the
I'ashiiT we have (indicated could
promptly find good tenants iu this
city right now. and it is to be hopea
that the proper steps will lx - taken
to bring about tlie results we have
outlined.
